Monsanto’s corporate reputation is a shady as ever. It seems from the reading that the company has many good products, but has a trend of allowing serious health risks to be discovered when it is already too late. The company simply pays its way out of trouble every single time. International Business Times says the company’s “roundup resistant wheat has shown up in Oregon” (2013). This means that the company is doing nothing but continuing the trend of dishonesty from the chemical days. In terms of branding the company is fine. The company as far as business is concerned should continue to test the different genetics that they change and get some serious fact checks going. The company should set aside money and publish the results of testing

Monsanto is involved in a variety of ways,“The company produces the herbicide RoundUp, and also seeds whose genes have been engineered to survive RoundUp's active plant-killing ingredient. Now the vast majority of this country's soybeans, corn, sugar beets and canola possess those engineered genes,”(Boyle). Initially, this seems quite innocent, however, there’s no telling what kind of chemicals are being introduced into the food supply in order to allow these plants to survive. Also, sugar and corn are contained within almost every non organic product Americans consume, which means virtually everyone is ingesting these potentially harmful chemicals. Monsanto’s RoundUp resistant seeds should seem to be a farmer’s best friend, but it’s not always so simple, “As Rinehart would recall, the man began verbally attacking him, saying he had proof that Rinehart had planted Monsanto’s genetically modified (G.M.) soybeans in violation of the company’s patent. Better come clean and settle with Monsanto, Rinehart says the man told him—or face the consequences,”(Barlett). Simply dogmatic in his manner, the mysterious Monsanto man would not take no for an answer, even though later in the article Mr. Rinehart states that he isn’t a farmer and they have the wrong guy. Commonly referred to as seed police, even gestapo or mafia, this elite force of Monsanto maniacs are lifeless and drone-like in the sense that they will stop at nothing in order to obtain a profit, and if it’s the wrong person they’ll still use scare tactics to weasel cash out of innocent civilians. Saying that Monsanto is heavily involved in the production and distribution of genetically modified crops and seeds is a massive understatement, to demonstrate this,“In 1996 when Monsanto introduced RoundUp Ready Soybeans, the company controlled only 2% of the U.S. soybean market. Now, over 90% of
Monsanto has neglected to do their due diligence to protect the American people. Currently, they supply a weed killer called Roundup, that is poisoning both the environment and the American people. Monsanto is not required to disclose what ingredients are in Roundup, but one of the known ingredients is glyphosate, a possible carcinogen. While plants may be ready for this chemical introduction, humans are not. This chemical is potentially dangerous to people as it often ends up in our water sources, poisoning the fish in our food chain. While the potential dangers of Roundup are not known, that of previous Monsanto products are known. Monsanto helped to create the Atomic bomb that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There are no other words to describe the outcome of that bomb but devastating.
In prehistoric times, the cultures that flourished were those who grew grains, rice and corn. Now one of those very cultures face cultural genocide as Monsanto works to destroy its roots and replace ancient maize with GMO corn. The film SUNÚ documents this struggle, from the halls of government to the hills of southern
Take a good look at what you consume. You will soon realize that it is Monsanto’s creation of “frankenfood”. Frankenfood, also known as genetically modified muck, is extremely hazardous and detrimental to our health. Monsanto, the world’s largest agricultural and agrochemical biotechnology corporation is the modern day version of the worst villain and “the face of corporate evil” (Anderson e.p. 1). This company, made and run by humans, creates foods and other chemical infused products that cause adverse effects on both the environment and humanity. Instead of evolving and bringing about good changes to ourselves and the environment, we are doing the exact opposite. Humans always strive for better, but what we do not realize is that our careless
What irradiates me as we the public allow Monsanto to be very tight fisted and be the bully regarding patent infringement. We have colgoison regarding our government leaders with Monsanto: Clarence Thomas former attorney for Monsanto now US supreme court judge for life, Donald Rumsfeld goes from being CEO of Searle (owned by Monsanto) to U.S. Secretary of State, John Ashcroft NC state senator large amounts of donations to his campaign. How does Robert Shapiro go from CEO of Monsanto to President Clinton’s advisory board?
Monsanto describes there work in a positive manner saying it is a breakthrough for the agricultural industry and they are trying to help farmers all over the world with crop problems. Such as pesticides, weeds, droughts and weather. They also claim to be an advantage because more food can be grown using GMOs and that’s what the world needs with the population drastically increasing over the years. “In about forty years, relentless dry spells may be more frequent across the Southwest, say climate scientists, and California may have more dry years like this one, in which a drought has crippled the agricultural sector” ( Ostrander, 6). Many people for GMOs say it’s a break though, because GMO crops can be grown regardless of the climate. However, there is nothing natural about the foods it is not worth harming the environment even more than our society already has.
In a poll in 2014 measuring the reputation quotient of major companies, Monsanto ranked the third-lowest, above companies like BP, Bank of American and fell just behind Halliburton. For the better part of Monsanto's history, it has been a chemical company which produced compounds used in electrical equipment, adhesives, plastics, and paint. They also produced chemicals like DDT, Agent Orange, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Monsanto is best known for genetically modified organisms, or GMOs (Bennett, 2014).
It doesn’t help that Monsanto also has power in politics, one of the Monsanto chiefs for food safety, Michael Taylor was actually appointed by Barrack Obama himself. Barrack Obama also appointed his Supreme Court judge: Elena Kagan, who happens to be the chief defender of Monsanto and GMO’s. Whether Republican or Democratic, Monsanto wields a strong power within politics that helps give them an edge in keeping their company going. (Obama). There are good aspects of Monsanto, like the efficiency of cheap seeds, and crops that can withstand the harsh behaviors of weathers, and the ability the crops have to survive a longer time. But not even the cheapest crops can cover up Monsanto’s long history of evil, from polluting the environment with PCB’s, the chemical Agent Orange, and the weed killer “Round-Up Ready”, to Monopolizing itself to being the owner of 90% of the seed industry and shutting down small
Monsanto’s Monopoly Over Genetically Modified Crops Monopolies are established in certain industries when one firm controls the market of a product that cannot be differentiated. In today’s economy, monopolies can be found in various industries, including within the seed industry. Monsanto is an agricultural giant that creates genetically modified seeds and crop protection products (Monsanto Company, 2017a). Though Monsanto is not the only firm in the seed industry, it is a monopoly in the genetically modified seed and crop protection industry. Monsanto is the leading firm in GMO foods and crops because of their many patents on their products and technology.
Monsanto is a company that some people may not be explicitly familiar with on a first name basis. However, the work that the company has done over the last century, with a larger emphasis on its most recent ventures, have been deeply engrained in our lives, our food, and our economy. Monsanto has those who advocate on their behalf in addition to their naysayers. While Monsanto has made huge strides in terms of biotechnology over the last couple of decades, their accomplishments, and the relevant methods, have not been free of criticism and controversy. In order to analyze Monsanto’s corporate environment, it is important to first explore their Strengths, Weaknesses,
First, Monsanto would need to make sure their products are efficiently branded. For example, Monsanto could invest in product identification from an ingredients standpoint. If products are clearly labeled, customers would be aware of the environmental impact of utilizing the products. According to Ferrell and Hartline (2016), “Many skeptics see biotech crops as unnatural, with Monsanto scientists
Collaboration involves working together with others as members of a team with the intention to achieve a common goal. For example, in the nursing profession, the various departments in the health care organizations collaborate to ensure that long and the short term patient outcomes are met within the required time frames. Goals are stated and particular projects introduced to achieve the goals so that the members remain focused on the goals until the objectives are achieved (Carryer, et al 2007). Cooperation involves allowing the mutual actions without any form of obstruction. For example, if an investigation is introduced regarding the particular behavior of the nursing staff, such employees would
While I agree it is important to find a sustainable food source and way to produce such foods, people in this generation tend to be more concerned with organically and naturally grown foods. There are several companies that now offer 100% certified organic foods in which a number of people are now learning towards after hearing all of the derogatory statements involving Monsanto's genetically modified products. Many Monsanto stakeholders should already growing concerned of the safety implications of genetically modified foods. Biotech crops are completely unnatural and many are stating that Monsanto is "playing God" by creating these genetically modified seeds. Stakeholders are also concerned about destructive effects on those who ingest their products that are modified with the Roundup. It is a very valid and growing concern and because of this, Monsanto's stocks have continuously plummeted over the last few years; which is also where the stakeholder concerns lie. At this time there is no substantial evidence that has been produces to indicate that Monsanto's GM seeds will or can cause human harm, and it could very well be a long time until we can know for sure they won't. But in the meantime, as long as farmers are able to produce massive crops and save billions by using Monsanto's products, Monsanto will continue to produce these goods and service those willing to use them. I feel that there will come a day when they do discover that these GM products lead to harmful or fatal diseases and when they do, there will be a major shortage of food worldwide. It was stated back in September 2012 that French researchers had found a direct link between Monsanto corn and numerous cancers in lab rats. The two year study
I would like to start my essay with the definition of Corporate Social Responsibility and how I understand it. CSR that is a set of activities of the company that help to solve problems related to the ecology, society and economy, such activities help to improve people’s life. Frankly speaking, I knew that some companies help people and environment, but I never attach importance to this activities. But after two year of studying CSR I understood how it works and why company use it. I believe that company that provides activities that have great impact o society and environment has a competitive advantage over those companies that did not do it.
