In this paper, we will discuss the themes of redemption, moral truths and a just society and their correlation to the play Hamlet written by Shakespeare. The setting of this play is in the late middle ages where most of the story is taking place at a castle in Denmark. A large part of this plays theme is tied into what most would consider justice and others might consider revenge. Moral Truths I first wanted to discuss the plays relation to moral truths because at the beginning of the play, Prince Hamlet discovers the truth of the death of this father, King Hamlet. It may not be the usual way that revelation is received by others but maybe a ghost in the form of his father was the way that Hamlet needed to understand the truth. Just Society The first part of the play that we can see Hamlet is not living in a just society, is because of the fact that he and many others are living under the control of a corrupt King who committed murder to obtain his position of king. This brings up the question of whether or not can a society ruled by a monarchy be a just society at all? In my personal opinion, it cannot because of the fact that to have a just society, all members of that society must strive for what is considered justice. These just actions cannot be carried out in a monarchy due to the laws made for everyone by just one man. A part of the play that does a well job showing the opposite of a just society is when Hamlet is sent to England to be killed when he kills Polonius. Yes I believe the murder was Hamlets fault, however Polonius was hiding in the queens bedchamber committing the act of adultery. This gave King Claudius the idea to send Hamlet to his death, in which I interpreted that it was not for Hamlets wrong doing but for Claudius’s own protection in fear that justice might be
