Moral Values

People are seen and judged by their actions and beliefs. When people see a person through their eyes, one’s actions determine who they are. Values are in every person’s core and are everyone’s moral compass. A person’s decisions and actions run from their principles and because of this, one’s values help to define a person’s identity.

Values are societies own guides to life. They identify what is wrong and what is right, however it is up to the people to decide whether or not to follow them. But what are values? Values can be defined as “principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2015). Furthermore, values are “important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable” (Business Dictionary, 2015). Values hold high importance in the lives of people as they have major influence on behaviour and attitude, as well as serving as broad guidelines in many situations. Values relate to our personal principles, morals, and ideals—that is, what we consider to be important.Each person is unique, with their own personal values and beliefs shaped by a number of factors that include culture, religion, and personal experiences.We value each person as an individual, respect their aspirations and commitments in life, and seek to understand their priorities, needs, abilities and limits.

Values: Values are collective ideas about what is right or wrong, good or bad, and desirable or undesirable in a particular culture. Values provide us with criteria by which to evaluate people, events or objects. Though values do not actually determine what behaviors are appropriate, we do use them to defend our individual behavior. Values and ethics are one of the most important characteristic of an individual. They basically define who we are and what we believe. There are many factors that determine our values and ethics. Culture, religion, and many other factors affect our beliefs. Many times are values and ethics can clash with different people who hold different views and beliefs. This doesn't mean our values or ethics are wrong it just means we think differently than others. Most people have a good sense of ethics and values. Knowing between right and wrong is a good foundation to practicing good ethics and morals.

The claim that moral values cannot be derived from facts is grounded in the idea that facts are descriptive and informative, whereas value propositions are prescriptive and imply that we ought to carry out certain action or act in a particular way. Essentially, it is believed that there are no transcendent moral thoughts to be known or discovered by individuals. David Hume initially pointed out that it would be illogical to derive facts from values – facts cannot be used in the assignment of values. This was later referred to as the is-ought gap, fact-value distinction, or “naturalistic fallacy” to use the term created by G.E. Moore.
