Morals, Values, And Ethics

We’ve had a lot of discussion about ethics, values and morals this week and have drawn some lines between the meaning of each that applies to our personal and professional lives. Our values help guide us in our understanding of right and wrong, basically what we believe to be acceptable action in any situation we’re presented with. Morals are types of values that deal more with good and bad, the foundation for our behavior and decisions (The Definition of Morality, 2014). Ethics use shared morals and values in a system of accepted rules that a specific group of people agree to abide by. For example, most physicians agree to abide by the Code of Medical Ethics established by the American Medical Association since it is considered to be the most comprehensive code available (AMA's Code of Ethics, 2015).

In order to start this paper, I had to make sure I knew the differences between values, moral and ethics. It’s believed that values are what we learn from childhood from parents and surrounding influences of adults involved in the child’s life. Morals are the beliefs developed from that value system and how one should behave in any given situation. Ethics on the other hand is how someone actually behaves in the situation that may test ones morals and values, wow are you confused yet?

While conducting a therapy session in which the entire family is present, I then realize that the father is my parent’s lawyer. This now crosses the boundaries of multiple relationships. It is said that as a therapist, when this happens I am supposed to take action and follow the necessary steps to avoid confrontation or legal actions. This issue affects code 1.3 and is somewhat difficult to deal with depending on the situation. Since I know that the father was my parent’s lawyer, I must take action even if he does not recognize who I am. This week nine paper will discuss the values and ethics in the practicum agency and answer questions related to ethics. In addition, this paper will discuss ethical issues or dilemmas at the agency and how social workers address these issues. As described in Black, ethics and morals are defining characteristics that guide nursing care. Each play a particular role in the efficacy of each nurse and the way he or she performs within the scope of practice. Morals are established as a rule of conduct in any situation provided and once a nurse is aware of one’s personal beliefs and values, safe and effective client care can be delivered through ethical decision making.

Over the course of PHI 102: Introduction to Ethics we looked into questions such as what is good? what is evil? by studying different moral theories. We learned about Relativism, Ethical Egoism,The Divine Command Theory, Utilitarianism, Kantian Deontology, The Social Contract Theory, Rawls’ Theory of Justice, and Feminist Ethics of Care. We studied these moral theories not to make judgements about the different moral theories that are out there but instead to attempt to have a better understanding of a variety of moral theories so that we would know the reasons for and against the moral theory we believe is “right”.

Throughout the history of ethics there have been many debatable questions asked. Some of these questions of ethics are broad and some are very straight forward. I will state my opinion on the questions asked with either yes or no, and give my reasoning on why I feel that way. My opinion on these topics leads back to my ethics, morals, and upbringing. These topics require people to really think about what is being asked. Most of my opinions on these questions are strictly yes or no, but some are not so easy to decide on.
