Threatened with a gun and remarks to “never to see your mommy again”, a six year old boy was abducted on his way home from school. Terrified by further threats that he would be “nailed to the wall of the shed”, the boy was taken to a basement for four hours. Bound by his hands and feet with plastic bags, his pants removed, he was further told he would be “sold into sex slavery”. The abductor is his uncle. The instigators of this tragedy, his Mother and Grandmother.
In February (2015), a six-year-old boy, in the United States, was ‘taught’ this appalling ‘lesson’ as he was considered to be “too nice” and needed to know the dangers of the world.
It is a fine line between encouragement and education, versus insecurity and fear. In Australia,

In 2006 the USA handled over 80% more child pornography cases within a ten year span. In Australia, a 30% rise within two years. In Victoria alone, the sex offenders register is growing by 500 per year. The message we pass to our children must be clear and concise. It also needs to be accurate.
Fortunately, plenty of support is available for all parents. Tracey, from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation advises “The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum starts from Prep, as does the Keeping Kids Safe Resource Kit, however, we know this is also widely used in kindergartens. As it is difficult to teach children under 4 years old safety strategies (on the internet), it is advised that they are supervised at all times.”
Another key development for this modern world is the new phone app designed for children. The “Help Me” app is designed specifically for children in unsafe situations. Pressing the app sounds an alarm and sends two text messages to pre-installed safety numbers. Included in the text is the GPS coordinates of the location the text is sent from. Considering 80% of all stranger abductions occurs within 500 meters of the child’s home, this app is a must have for all children. The “Help Me” app has already been successfully used for this
There should be first aid kits in every classroom for safety and preparation of teacher’s confidence toward safety. Supervision is important however, it helps with children and teacher’s safety. Teacher’s should check any equipment at least three times a week to make sure everything is a safe environment for children. If emergency is at extreme levels there should be an emergency preparation plan in every daycare or public school
It’s time to separate the child sex offender from the children being accused of sex offending unreasonably. There are many stories of teenagers 15, 16, 17, just trying on young love for the first time. What should be happy memories can be turned to shame, and they don’t even have to have actual intercourse for it to be called a “sex offense.” Here are some examples of needed changes to our laws:
With the Pandora’s Box opened, we may find ourselves forced to rediscover morality due to our natural tendencies. This does not mean accepting adult-child relationships. Figure 3 indicates if we are serious about protecting children, then that ultimately requires some level of understanding, which is a problem for most because that is dangerously close to compassion. On the contrary, the risk they pose is the very reason why we need to support pedophiles who do not want to become sex offenders. We all want the same thing. We do not want them to offend nor their potential victims to offend. In 2008, Michael Seto, a forensic psychologist, published a book stating that the onset of pedophilia is right around the stages of puberty, as with any other sexual orientation. I believe we can prevent a greater number of victims if we put more energy into early detection and providing support before the first offense occurs, rather than solely relying on punishment after the fact. We need to be thinking about the children that pedophiles once were and catch them at their vulnerable stages, which are during puberty. There we can find a sense of compassion and support to want to help. In 2014, Margo Kaplan, an associate professor at Rutgers School of Law, wrote an op-ed in New York Times stating that pedophilia is neurologically rooted, supporting Cantor’s research.
In today’s society of internet sex crimes being broadcast on the evening news and 60 Minutes doing specials at least once a month. Are we paying enough attention to other sexual crimes and problems, such as the laws pertaining to juvenile sex offenders and their victims? Could more be done to help and protect the perpetrators, victims and their families?
Originations about pedophiles have been evolving quickly, and pedophilia has as of late turned into a subject of expanded mindfulness and concern. Do TV programs uncover pedophiles, as well as there are new sexual guilty party exposure laws, sites that track sentenced sexual wrongdoers, and more examinations of pedophilia, particularly after the sex misuse outrage in the Catholic Church. However kids still stay helpless against sexual guilty parties paying little mind to their open façade.
Theresa Flores, a girl from Detroit, was 15 years old when a boy she had a crush on from school offered her a ride home. Instead of taking her home he brought her back to his house where he insisted she come in. Red flags went off in Theresa’s head, but he told her he liked her, and that’s all it took to convince her to come inside. He offered her a soda laced with drugs that made her become dizzy, and then he raped her. The next day at school the boy and his friends informed her of the pictures they had taken of her, and threatened her to “earn the pictures back”, or they would share the pictures with everyone at school, her church, and to her family. From that day on, every night Theresa would receive a call around midnight and the boys would pick her up and bring her to random houses where often several men would be waiting for her. This continued for almost two years till her family relocated (Zukowski, 2015). This is one example of a girl being lured into sex trafficking as a teen and is one out of an estimated 800,000 women and children that are trafficked across international borders every year (Facts on human trafficking and sex slavery, 2012). Sex trafficking is a huge issue today and is only continuing to grow as an industry. In order to put an end to this horrifying issue more action must be taken in order for a difference of significance to be made. However, in order to take action people must understand the essence of what it is,
This article begins to talk about how adolescents around the world are committing crimes that are not safe for them or the community. The point of this article was to prove a point through research to see if a sex offender registry list would be a beneficial deterrence method. This research was not created to solely deter adolescents, but it was designed to be a general deterrence (Najdowski, C.J, et al., 2015).
What comes to mind when hearing the word “child”? Maybe it is a simpler time, excitement, or innocence. What if the words “sex trafficking” were added after it, then what? Child sex trafficking is one of those taboo subjects that we hear of on the news, yet nobody feels comfortable discussing in public, especially because society has trained us as individuals to believe it will never happen to us. However, it is necessary in order to fight it and diminish its existence. This paper will reveal not only the definition of child sex trafficking and those most likely to become victims, but also how expansive it is locally as well as federally and internationally, legislation on the topic, survivor stories and their need for support, and
Around the world children are being exploited daily through a variety of disturbing practices. The United States of America is the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the number one producer of Child Pornography in the world. (1 Kutcher) It is a frightening statistic. Child sex trafficking is the second most lucrative crime business around the world. It is second only to the business of narcotics trafficking. (3 The CNN Freedom Project) Education on the topic is crucial in order to develop a local, as well as a global, solution in the fight to save children from this heinous act upon their innocence. It is necessary to understand how children get introduced and pulled into this way of life, ways the children are exploited, and what's being done to stop these horrific crimes against the children.
Locally, nationally, and worldwide, many women and children are abducted by use of deception, fraud, and abuse of power then sold to do forceful work each year (Goswami 176-177).
Who wants their children to be sex offenders? No one wants their children to grow up to be sex offenders so we must teach our children so that they have the skills to combat the world our society lives in. This is why we must teach about porn to our middle school students. Porn is nearly everywhere just like sex is. Where there is sex, there is porn! And remember, sex is everywhere! Music videos are like porn, just with clothes on. The way these dancers are dancing mimics people having sex (Yarber et al., 2009). Our children see sex and porn
Within today’s current political climate and media, the public has cultivated a distorted view of sex offenders as being compulsive, inherently untreatable and that they re-offend at high levels (Galeste, 2010 and Seidler, 2012, 70). Consequently, this intense label provoked by the media places offenders under increased pressure, serving as a potential factor in the increase risk of re-offending (Seidler, 2010, 70)
Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery where its perpetrators profit from control, exploitation, coercion and defrauding of others through forced labor, or sexual exploitation and in some cases both. Sexual exploitation is the most prevalent form of human trafficking especially in the United States. Even though accurate statistics are rare in this field, those currently existing approximate that massive numbers of women and girls are sold for sexual exploitation within America’s human trafficking industry, which is worth an estimate of $ 9.5bn (Kelly, p.1). Additionally, the US Department of justice reveals that 300,000 children are at a risk of being sold into this inhumane and highly exploitative industry (Kelly, p.1). In the United States sex trafficking commonly takes place in the streets, residential brothels, brothels disguised as massage parlors and spas, online escorts services, truck stops, strip clubs, motels, hotels and anywhere else that is conducive for the trade to thrive. In addition to the inhumane treatment and extreme hardships that victims of sex trafficking are subjected to, all victims of sexual exploitation share one common experience, which is the loss of their freedom. This paper is a demonstration of how victims of sex trafficking in pursuit of lucrative jobs, education or loving romantic relationships, unknowingly and unwillingly trade off their freedom and freewill to perpetual bondage characterized by drugs, sex
Imagine for a second if the individuals meant to nurture you instead turned your young life into an experience full of abuse and violation. The overwhelming majority of young people have been blessed with the gift of a family that has their best intents at heart. Nevertheless, in some rare instances some families find themselves plagued with problems that occasionally can be projected on their youngest members. This is exactly the case in the book Caged by Molly Venzke. This novel follows the horrendous experiences of two young girls as they are forced into a life of sex trafficking by their father because of the drug-induced absence of their mother. The way that the young children are trafficked in this novel clearly shows how society today
In recent years, pornography has established itself as perhaps the most controversial topic arising out of the use of the Internet. The easy availability of this type of sexually explicit material has caused a panic among government officials, family groups, religious groups and law enforcement bodies and this panic has been perpetuated in the media.
