Leadership will certainly run into challenges if they are not aligned with a company core values and hold employees to that standard as well. Leading team is all about growth in the organization including professional growth with all employees. Any leader of an organization should be a servant leader and ensure that all employees are treated fairly and know they are important to the organization. Jim Blanchard, Jr. the leader of Synovus stated “Our culture is rooted in the notion that people are valuable and they are entitled dignity, respect and appreciation” (Hess & Cameron, 2006).

Every leader is different and does things in a unique way that seperates them from their group. Some will take action immediately and others will take the time to think about a decision. There is no right or wrong approach as long as they keep in mind of who they are leading and what they are doing. Leaders are there to guide and motivate people, take control of a situation when no one else will, coach others and so much more. As Alex Knapp wrote about in his article “Five Leadership Lessons from James T. Kirk,” leadership is about constantly learning, encouraging creativity and innovation, working with team members, and understanding the competition in order to lead better and lead to greater places. Knapp observed through Kirk’s actions that the knowledge required to lead is not necessarily all the information that is needed to be an accomplished leader. A good leader will also have people on their team that contradict their views, as Knapp implied, in order to get a better perspective of the problem. Every group, team, or organization has a leader. That leader has to have certain qualities to be well respected and followed by his or her following. Not only does the leader have qualities and responsibilities to maintain but also the group’s members. Both the leader and individuals in the group must have respect, fear, and honesty among each other to be a productive group.

I would expect that every person has experienced a time when they were part of a team with a good and bad leader. In business there are many times when the wrong leadership styles are chosen and have a negative effect on the end results. Throughout history many scholars have tried to understand and improve the art of leadership. They have given us theories, practices, suggestions and models to follow so that we too can reach the goal of the perfect leader. Today’s managers are influenced by many of these ideas but also by past experience, both good and bad, and by how the dynamic of the team that they are leading is built upon. These experiences and observations directly impact the leadership style and many times the end result of the tasks being performed. If a leader has the understanding of what his/her group wants, then they are better suited to make the right leadership and communication decisions, so as not to have a negative effect on the team or outcome.

Ralph and Jack attempted to lead the boys in very different ways and for very different reasons. Being a good leader is about doing what’s best for everyone not yourself. There are many people in the world that would make effective leaders. A person I know that is an effective leader is my Uncle Eric.

Leadership is the ability to inspire and focus members on a common goal, whether short term or long term and have the same vision. Leadership is more than telling or ordering, but having members believe and want to follow the same path as you. It’s a commitment to your people built on trust and respect. Many leaders shaped my personal leadership philosophy, to include several negative and positive experiences. Negative experiences from poor leaders and lessons learned on my part have uniquely shaped this vision. Difficult to be a good follower when your leader lacks competency, integrity, and your trust. If a leader takes credit for work other than their own, or forces and ideology onto others, but does not follow it themselves; these negative influences damage the trust and respect required by all leaders. However, positive experiences can also have a career lasting impact. A leader who inspires through personal actions and convictions can change how an entire unit operates without ever saying a word.

Being a leader is often seen as impressive and key in a resume, merely because it is glorified in today’s society. However, people often forget that if every person on this planet was a leader, there would be no followers, and therefore, no leaders. Becher and Sivers both argue that followers are significant in creating a leader, something I genuinely agree with. However, Sivers seems to point out that being the first follower is hard and can lead to ridicule; although I agree that it is hard to join a small group in action, I believe being the leader is harder and more dangerous regarding the possibility of ridicule.

Leadership is something that comes natural for some and is a developed skill for others. If we take a look at the role of the leader, we look for certain traits in a person. For example, in grade school, there always seems to be clicks, large and small groups of people that cling together. When we examine these social sub-groups, we often find that there is always one person that leads the group. This person is usually the person that brings the group together. I remember being in social circles with people that I knew I would never be friends with. However, we may have one or two people in common, thus we remain friends. Overtime, we

Throughout my short life, I have come to realize that a leader does not necessarily, although they may, maintain a defined position of leadership. A leader is one who will rise to the challenge even when the odds in opposition. A leader will tackle any barrier that stands in the way of the goal. A leader is willing to be hated and face criticism for doing what is right. Leaders come in all different forms, but a leader is the one who is always willing to make the difficult decisions.

My first thought is that your inner circle matters. One can look at my leadership and see a considerable amount of time has been placed in making sure the right people are influencing my most inner thoughts and beliefs. For example, the criterion that governs my inner circle is simple, they have to be smarter, faster, and more like Jesus than I am. As I have begun to place people like this in my inner circle (some call this their “board of directors) I see the value of carrying both buckets. I am keenly aware that one must calm situations that are out of control and sometimes dump gasoline on those that need a fire under them. Once we are able to identify this person we must

Within an organization, a poor leader or team member who is selfish and only looking for what is good for them will make the circle small enough to cover themselves and their immediate members. This is known as the “inner circle” of society. But a good leader is willing to stretch the circle around every member of the organization in order to make every team member feel safe. It’s only when the team members feel safe that they can spend their time and resources on what truly makes the organization move, as opposed to spending time on making themselves safe. Making yourself safe, when outside the circle, can be a tiring exercise and one that a lot of us have experienced. It could mean spending energy trying to defend a position you hold in the work team. It may mean ensuring that your direct report does not take the credit for work you have completed. It’s all tiring and decays the trust within any team.

The leader and follower relationship is looked at as winners and losers, when it is actually a symbiotic association. (Chaleff) Leaders cannot exist without followers and followers cannot exist without a leader. Leaders can forget that they need the backing of a solid team of followers in order to succeed. Because they make the “important” decisions and enjoy an astronomical rate of pay, it is easy to overlook the loyal, hard working individuals that make everything happen under them. Followers too can forget that they are a valuable element of a successful organization, and that their feedback and ideas are welcome.

I have had many leaders I’ve followed over the years. An impactful experience was working for my brother. I was 20 and my brother 21 when I got a job for him as an automotive detailer. Up until that point I never looked at my brother as a leader. Over the year or two my perspective of him changed a lot, and I learned a great deal. These things came naturally to him. One thing I observed is how he consistently held his team accountable. So much so, if a coworker messed up. They would almost be afraid the consequence. On the other hand he also would acknowledge good work which showed respect. Over time I saw how the team progressed. Eventually my brother hardly even needed to be at work.
