In life, choosing is never easy. Choosing what to wear, eat, where to go, and how to live. Choosing what you want to do for the rest of your life, is as easy as walking to the moon and back. There is no brochure that gives you a sure set of bullet points as to what you would like to do, instead, we are meant to simply discover what we would enjoy doing most. There are over a million different careers, yet I’ve chosen a profession in Dental Hygiene. Believe it or not, my first words were not in fact, “I want to become a dental hygienist”.

Students nowadays face many challenges when it comes to obtaining a college education. We evaluate an institution’s quality based on what we need the most. The qualities sought out may vary by each person’s personal point of view. However, as a student, I’ve found that most students seek for an institute that benefits them the most. Attending a community college has been an enormous advantage towards my education. I have been attending San Bernardino Valley College for the last two semesters. I have come to respect their philosophies and values. The institution has now been in business for 87 years. They venture to encourage both students and faculty towards high standards of achievement and progress into exceptional members of the society. They now offer a variety of degrees, transfer programs and certificates for a wide range of students. San Bernardino Valley College has an accomplished staff, student support services and technological tools that pave the road towards the conquest of a quality education.

Isn't it everyone’s dream to have a job where we love it so much it’s our hobby and not really our job? Well, at least it has been for me, wanting to become a dental hygienist. I don't really want to do it for the money (although it is pretty decent pay), but the work environment and what you are providing for others. The satisfaction you get when you can make someone smile or make them feel confident about their smile. And “boy oh boy”, is there a story behind on how I found a hobby/part-time. I have. Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.

This article provides an insightful view into the perceived and real status of community colleges in relation to their university counterparts. Once thought of as a place merely for underachievers to attend for workforce training, Trowbridge points out these institutions now have more to offer. They provide an affordable opportunity for students to complete the same courses that are available at the university for a fraction of the cost. Noting the financial savings in comparison to the traditional university, along with the overall quality of instruction, local community colleges have become a viable alternative for those seeking a college education without the incurring unnecessary amounts of debt.

With thinking of going to a community college in mind, I began to search for community colleges around me. I found one not far from my home called Johnston Community College. Living only about twenty minutes away and in the same county as the school was great but what I did not like was the school’s atmosphere. To me, the school reminded me of a prison with its tall grayish brown walls and barely any windows. I did not want to attend a school that to me felt like a prison, so I kept looking for other community colleges. When I was looking around, I found a community college called PITT. One fact about PITT that I liked was how close it was to ECU. I ended up not applying to PITT because to drive to and from school every day would be a total of two hours and forty-one minutes of driving every day. Along with how far a drive to PITT would be every day, the cost of gas to drive to school would be too much money. Searching for the right community college became easy at the end. After searching through a bunch of different community colleges, I finally narrowed my choices down to one
