A third misconception society expects is, only women can be feminist. As the world changes day by day many people are becoming feminist. Not only females but, men too. Whenever someone labels themselves as a feminist it doesn’t affect the movement, whether they’re a female or male. Instead, it spreads the word of what feminism really means. For example, my father is a feminist and has no shame of letting the whole world know. My father believes women should have the freedom to make their own choices and women should be able to live their lives how they want to with their educations, careers, bodies, etc. He believes women deserve to have equal pay for the equal amount of work done. My father is always thinking of ways to spread the positivity of feminism. Overall, he supports feminism and believes in equality along with freedom.

What does it mean to be a Feminist? Does it automatically mean you hate men or does it mean you're an activist for women's rights? Contrary to popular belief, feminism is not about establishing a superior gender. It is about fighting for equality and destroying the social, cultural and historical norms set upon women throughout the world. The Twenty-first century has brought change and growth to female empowerment. Although, in many parts of the world women are given the same rights as men, they are still treated and viewed inferior to men. G.I. Jane perfectly illustrates the struggle women have gone through, even when given “identical” opportunities as men.

Feminism is a living word. There can never truly be a one set definition for the word as the term has often shifted meanings to correspond to the time period. Feminists fight for the rights that men have under the United States Constitution and to have the right to not be discriminated against. Any action against any woman, intentional or not, goes against the principles that many women and men stand for.

Feminists believe that the expectations for women are far too high to be attainable for most—they are expected to be the perfect weight, the perfect height, the perfect everything in the eyes of society in order to be seen as worth anything. Feminists believe that women are seen by society as less powerful, less smart, simply less than men. Feminists also believe that feminism promotes gender equality, not misandry. They aim to fix this. Anti-feminists, on the other hand believe that feminism is women being obnoxious and putting themselves above men. They think feminism in 2015 in unnecessary. Women already have the right to vote, what more could they possibly want? This oppression is just one reason why feminism exists and—in my opinion—is extremely important in today’s world.

What society and anti-feminist fail to realize is the only thing all feminist have in common is that they share the same interest in fighting for the equality rights of women. “as soon as you attempt to analyze all that has been spoken and written in the name of feminism, it becomes clear that this is not one unitary concept, but instead a diverse and multifaceted grouping of ideas, and indeed actions.(Jane Freedman).” Feminist can be mothers, housewives, religious, atheist, black, white, a part of the LGBTQ community, feminine, masculine, conservative, liberal, and most of all feminist can be either female or male. Everyone has their own idea and interpretation of what feminism is to them and it can constantly change due to life experiences and knowledge. Instead of viewing people who refer to themselves as feminist using the negative stereotypes used in the previous paragraphs society should educate themselves on what feminist stand for and understand the important role they play in the world.

Feminism, when people hear the word, they may want to scamper as quickly and far as they possibly can. In the book “No Turning Back,” author Estelle Freedman gives an accurate four-part definition of the very active movement: “Feminism is a belief that women and men are inherently part of equal worth. Because most societies privilege men as a group, social movements are necessary to achieve equality between women and men, with the understanding that gender always intersects with other social hierarchies” (Freedman 7).

Many people are often misinformed or given bad first impressions of feminism. However, feminism is equal rights for all people of different race, sex, gender, and sexuality. Many of the people that give feminism a bad name, include a self-proclaimed feminist that is running for presidency, and meninists who are satirical equal rights activists. In reality, feminism is pro-gender equality and opportunities for all types of people.

Feminism itself is a belief of gender equality of both men and women, but it have been misunderstood for years, but apparently, this fight against feminism, the word itself, have become the new “dirty word”, something causes not only unfollowers on social media, but haters, and unbelievers.
