Most Dangerous Game Analysis

It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.

In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, who is a hunter, lands on an island where General Zaroff lives. Zaroff has become bored with hunting animals and now lures humans to his island to hunt and kill; but even hunting humans has become too easy for him. Zaroff is a very skillful hunter and he has access to guns, dogs and help from a man named Ivan. He promises to let Rainsford free though, if he can survive three days. Rainsford, being the skillful hunter he is, is able to set traps and survive up until the last day when the dogs corner him and he jumps off the cliff into the rocky water below. What Zaroff doesn’t know is that Rainsford is a great swimmer and surprises him by hiding behind his curtains; Zaroff then challenges him to a fight in which Rainsford wins. This

General Zaroff is killed by Rainsford. Zaroff was killed by Rainsford because Zaroff had killed people for fun. Since General Zaroff did killed humans, karma came back around and he was killed. When Zaroff was hunting for Rainsford, Rainsford sets up a trap and it kills Ivan, Zaroff’s only friend. General Zaroff has killed humans that have their own friends and family. Ivan was taken away from General Zaroff as a sign of karma. While Zaroff is looking to kill Rainsford, Zaroff doesn’t know that Rainsford had a trap set up to kill Zaroff. Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.

In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills as he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like resourcefulness, strategic planning, and the ability to reason. Rainsford questioned the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods and ended up playing a part in his game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, in the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.

Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. For instance General Zaroff said “Your brain against mine, Your woodcraft against mine.” (Connell 6). This shows that General Zaroff gives right to rainsford to try and outsmart him and try to win by surviving. If rainsford outsmarts him then he will get the victory or he can do what Zaroff wanted to do to him which was kill him. I think that Rainsford choose to confront Zaroff in the end, rather than ambush him because he knows that doing that would be wrong. Rainsford is an honorable man who was sucked into Zaroff's game through the unfortunate events that surrounded his arrival on the island. Though Zaroff's game is one that involves murder, he, too, is a man of his word, and he plays the game according to the rules he has established. Rainsford's desire for revenge also seems to have overwhelmed the sense of fair play and humanity which he displayed earlier in the story when he called Zaroff's human hunt an act of murder. This short story portrays terror or fear, a sense of danger, and also the hatred that animals feel for their killer at the same time as making a contemporary correlation to real life. The short story was written during the era when animal hunting was common with the rich folks. “The Most Dangerous Game” as the name implies, is indeed a dangerous game. The story is about a man named Rainsford and his struggle to win a game of hunting against the opponent General Zaroff. Rainsford fell off a yacht in the Caribbean Sea and so he swam to the seashore of a bewildering island. Rainsford was able to find his way to a house that belonged to General Zaroff. The hunting game began after Rainsford met with Zaroff and his servant Ivan, then Rainsford realized how uncultured General Zaroff actually is.

The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful and action-packed tale. In this story, there are two memorable characters, Rainsford and General Zaroff. These two characters share many similarities, yet are very unique in their own way.

Rainsford hides up in a tree. Zaroff lets gives him a chance to escape. Rainsford build a mealy man-catcher and it ended up damaging Zaroff. Rainsfords point of view does not change by the end of the story. He knew he won the game at the end when Zaroff thought he had killed himself. As Mr. Rainsford tried day and night to outwit General Zaroff, he found himself growing with the knowledge that eventually he would have to take General Zaroffs’ life if he wanted to survive.
