He ran for his life when seeing a man and a other man with dogs. When seeing one image fall he ran straight for the water to get away from the hunter. In the short story, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford was a hunter taking a boat ride. When Rainsford fell off the boat and hearing a pistol shot swam toward the shot to get help him find his way home. Then met Ivan the giant, and General Zaroff who live in a big house. General Zaroff talks about hunting and the deadly hunting game. Rainsford is forced to play the game and kills General Zaroff and Ivan. Rainsford kills both of the people not because he wants to but to escape and he is forced to. Rainsford had to use self defense because he cannot refuse to not play the game. Rainsford is given the two option to play the game, or to play Ivan's way of the game. Ivan's way of the game will not be good for Rainsford. So the choice not really a choice it is take his chance live or die. The game is really hard to win but General Zaroff has never lost. General Zaroff says," I turn you over to Ivan... he has his own way of the sport"(Connell 35). Rainsford did not have a choice to play the game which means that both General Zaroff and Rainsford took there chance to die. If General Zaroff won Rainsford would have been killed. Rainsford had to fight and try to live or else be murdered. Rainsford also tried to go home" I wish to go today"(Connell 37). Rainsford can not go unless he wins the game or if he does not play the game wish to get killed. Rainsford has to fight to survive. Rainsford also had to kill the General Zaroff and Ivan because they were going to kill him. Rainsford was going to die because General Zaroff was talking about the people he killed before. General Zaroff and Ivan were willing to kill. They have killed before and will do it again. General Zaroff talking to Rainsford saying" The fellow lost his head. He made a straight trail that offered no problems at all" (Connell 36). General Zaroff was a highly experienced hunter. He searched all over the world for a good hunt. Now he hunts people, just to have fun. Rainsford is a victim of his game. General Zaroff was willing to kill. General Zaroff was talking about murdering
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, who is a hunter, lands on an island where General Zaroff lives. Zaroff has become bored with hunting animals and now lures humans to his island to hunt and kill; but even hunting humans has become too easy for him. Zaroff is a very skillful hunter and he has access to guns, dogs and help from a man named Ivan. He promises to let Rainsford free though, if he can survive three days. Rainsford, being the skillful hunter he is, is able to set traps and survive up until the last day when the dogs corner him and he jumps off the cliff into the rocky water below. What Zaroff doesn’t know is that Rainsford is a great swimmer and surprises him by hiding behind his curtains; Zaroff then challenges him to a fight in which Rainsford wins. This
General Zaroff is killed by Rainsford. Zaroff was killed by Rainsford because Zaroff had killed people for fun. Since General Zaroff did killed humans, karma came back around and he was killed. When Zaroff was hunting for Rainsford, Rainsford sets up a trap and it kills Ivan, Zaroff’s only friend. General Zaroff has killed humans that have their own friends and family. Ivan was taken away from General Zaroff as a sign of karma. While Zaroff is looking to kill Rainsford, Zaroff doesn’t know that Rainsford had a trap set up to kill Zaroff. When General Zaroff realized that he had been set up for a trap, he quickly moved out of the way. Even though Zaroff moved out of the way, the trap still hurt his shoulder. Zaroff had hurt other people during the past games that he had played, so he got hurt playing the game. General Zaroff has learned that what goes around, comes
Rainsford is not a hero due to his egocentric attitude and hypocritical behavior. After Rainsford hears the hounds and sees Ivan and General Zaroff approaching, he then creates a trap to kill General Zaroff. When Rainsford hears the footsteps stop, he looks back at the trap and “[sees] in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Conell 14). This quote proves that Rainsford does not obtain the qualities of an altruistic and civil being. This is due to Rainsford wanting to kill General Zaroff for his own survival. Furthermore, once Rainsford accidentally kills Ivan, he swims away in refuge from General Zaroff.
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills as he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like resourcefulness, strategic planning, and the ability to reason. Rainsford questioned the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods and ended up playing a part in his game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, in the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.
Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. For instance General Zaroff said “Your brain against mine, Your woodcraft against mine.” (Connell 6). This shows that General Zaroff gives right to rainsford to try and outsmart him and try to win by surviving. If rainsford outsmarts him then he will get the victory or he can do what Zaroff wanted to do to him which was kill him. Also Rainsford disagreed when Zaroff told him about the hunting game. “No,General,”he said “I will not hunt.” Then Zaroff basically said he had to or ivan will kill him.(Connell 9).This quote means that Rainsford did not like the idea that he had to stay in a jungle and
In the short story” The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford and Zaroff are hunters who came upon ShipTrap island the two had different aspects of hunting zaroff lost interested in killing animals and thought of another hunting activity to do he called it The Most Dangerous Game what he does is hunt humans and one day he challenged Rainsford to the hunting challenge either be hunt and killed or stay alive, so Rainsford had to kill him. Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought, Whoever is guilty of murder in the first degree shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for life; Whoever is guilty of murder in the second degree, shall be imprisoned for any
In the short story ”The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. General Zaroff was a hunter who lived on an isolated island where he hunted stranded humans. Rainsford was also a hunter, who had been stranded on the island. General Zaroff intended to hunt Rainsford, which lead to Rainsford effort to survive. The only way for Rainsford to survive was to kill General Zaroff.
In today’s world danger is at every footstep and knowing some self-defense skills can come in handy. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford falls off a yacht and swims to a mysterious island. On the island, Rainsford encounters a strange hunter, General Zaroff, who hunts human beings. Rainsford seems to be the hunter’s next target. General Zaroff and Rainsford play the most dangerous game in which Rainsford punishes the general for his crimes. Rainsford’s actions can be classified as self-defense. By killing Ivan, the security guard, and the general, he proves that he does not want to die and the general was a criminal.
I think that Rainsford choose to confront Zaroff in the end, rather than ambush him because he knows that doing that would be wrong. Rainsford is an honorable man who was sucked into Zaroff's game through the unfortunate events that surrounded his arrival on the island. Though Zaroff's game is one that involves murder, he, too, is a man of his word, and he plays the game according to the rules he has established. Rainsford's desire for revenge also seems to have overwhelmed the sense of fair play and humanity which he displayed earlier in the story when he called Zaroff's human hunt an act of murder. Rainsford is not a murderer, and ambushing Zaroff would be just that. Rainsford decides to allow Zaroff to play the game in order to give him
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell is a practical literature. This short story portrays terror or fear, a sense of danger, and also the hatred that animals feel for their killer at the same time as making a contemporary correlation to real life. The short story was written during the era when animal hunting was common with the rich folks. “The Most Dangerous Game” as the name implies, is indeed a dangerous game. The story is about a man named Rainsford and his struggle to win a game of hunting against the opponent General Zaroff. Rainsford fell off a yacht in the Caribbean Sea and so he swam to the seashore of a bewildering island. Rainsford was able to find his way to a house that belonged to General Zaroff. The hunting game began after Rainsford met with Zaroff and his servant Ivan, then Rainsford realized how uncultured General Zaroff actually is.
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful and action-packed tale. In this story, there are two memorable characters, Rainsford and General Zaroff. These two characters share many similarities, yet are very unique in their own way.
Rainsford hides up in a tree. Zaroff lets gives him a chance to escape. Rainsford build a mealy man-catcher and it ended up damaging Zaroff. Rainsford constructs a Burmese tiger pit, and killed Zaroffs dog. Rainsford makes a Ugandan knife trap, which murdered Ivan. Zaroffs goes back home thinking he won the game. But Rainsford just dived into the sea. Rainsford confronts Zaroff in his bedroom unexpected. Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed which leads to us thinking that he has somehow of killed
Rainsfords point of view does not change by the end of the story. He knew he won the game at the end when Zaroff thought he had killed himself. Because he was still alive the only way for him to win the game and have a chance of getting off the island was to kill Zaroff. “‘ I am still a beast at bay,’ he said, in a low, hoarse voice, ‘Get ready, General Zaroff’” (Connell 28)
As Mr. Rainsford tried day and night to outwit General Zaroff, he found himself growing with the knowledge that eventually he would have to take General Zaroffs’ life if he wanted to survive. Thats exactly what he did. Mr. Rainsford was able to pull of the unthinkable and murder General Zaroff in a cruel and violent way, but it gave him the reward of
