One important idea from "Drive" is that we always use the reward -and- punishment approach to motivate people and apply our human resource doesn't work for the 21st century (Pink,2011). I agree with his point because everyone drive by the different things. As an educator, we need to know the individual difference. Also in the book "The Element", Ken Robinson suggest that we need to change our education system in order to adapt to the development of society and the increasing demand of people. The teacher needs to change the way to motivate students to help them finding the element. In the other word, the educator needs to know what drive the different students not just use the reward-and-punishment approach. In the book "Drive", the author
2.3. Motivation is what causes us to act, it is either intrinsic (from within) which means to learn for your own fulfilment or extrinsic (from without) which means they may be an external factor motivating the learner. To help motivate learners you can set targets, be professional, create interesting and relevant tasks or activities, engage students and give them the opportunity to
theres a homeless man that live on the streets of DC, he had nothing and no where to go. one day he thought to himself, i want to do better but he didn't know where to start. i had met him on a school event called YSOP and we worked out in Washington DC homeless kitchen. Watching him for the next three days opened my eyes and showed me that if you really want something you have to motivate yourself cause sometime no one will.
The concepts of motivation allowed me to understand each of my students on an individual level as well. Not all students are motivated the same way and learning new ways to motivate first graders that are not, “if you do this, you will get a prize” changed my classroom environment. I used strategies like goal-setting to get my students motivated to do well on their assignments. When they saw the growth they were making it was pushing them to do better. They didn’t need to get something in order to do well. The satisfaction in seeing their growth gave them motivation. I am hoping that by starting them out with this strategy young, stays with them as they move on to the upper grade levels.
In the book Drive by Daniel H Pink he talks about various things that could come in handy. Pink talks about how people should change to Motivation 3.0 and leave behind Motivation 2.0.Motivation 3.0 is for someone to continue with their life and have a better future with doing things that you love and would want to do for your rest of your life. Which Motivation also talks about Type X behavior which leads to three types of behavior autonomy mastery and purpose, this explains how people use them to become someone better in their life and show us how that involves with Motivation 3.0. This is something I keep in consideration, that’s why I consider myself in having a Type I behavior that can lead as well with Motivation 3.0.
Education today is too Type X- meaning the emphasis on greater rewards for doing what you should do anyways is based on extrinsic rewards. The education system seems to be heavily based on carrots and sticks. The biggest way to motivate someone seems to be by dangling something, such as a carrot, in front of someone 's face or poking them with a stick. If you want a student to do something, why are they motivated with some type of compensation such as an A in the class? In his book, Drive, Daniel H. Pink divides motivation into three categories that evolved over time- Motivation 1.0, 2.0, 3.0. using these theories to challenge this motivation of carrot and sticks.
In the introduction and chapter one of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel H. Pink expressed how behavioral science can change the common understanding of people’s driving force and suggests a more helpful way to better performance. Pink mentioned that there are two main drives that are powered by behavior. First is the biological drive which comes from within individuals and the second drive comes from without rewards and punishments the environment provides for performing in particular ways. However, a scientist named Harry F. Harlow came up with a third drive after experimenting with monkeys and Harlow called it the “intrinsic motivation.” Harlow said that to completely comprehend the human condition, people have
Notably, being driven can help one get through tough times and can help not only one's self but others as well. Lee explains that crossing the border is extremely difficult and involved a lot of risks. Even though her family kept running into issues, she did anything she could to help them get to freedom (paragraphs 13 and 15). Similarly to Lee, striving for someone or something that you love and care about shows determination and drive. Being driven towards important things can help with survival later in life as well. "Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes but they don't quit"(Conrad Hilton). Even when faced with challenges, never give up because getting through difficult times will make a stronger being. During
Motivation can be defined as the desire or inspiration to carry out specific tasks or to do something. Motivation is required when goals are being set and more so in their execution. In a work setting, motivation can be defined as a process through which individuals choose between alternative forms of behavior with the aim of achieving personal objectives. The goals sought by individuals can be extrinsic or relatively tangible such as monetary rewards and promotion, or intrinsic or intangible such as self esteem or job satisfaction (Armstrong, 2006). In learning, the desire to attain good grades is what motivates a student to study hard everyday as they prepare for the exam. On the other hand, for a teacher to put his best foot forward, he
As cell phones become more popular, texting while driving is becoming the most widely known cause for car accidents among teens. The alarming rate of incidents where texting is involved is getting more parents worried and warning their children about the danger of texting while driving. Parents are urging the fact that drivers should pay attention to the road and traffic, not their phones. A popular study of 18 to 24 year old drivers showed that 66 percent of them have texted while driving. Since texting while driving is becoming more popular many states are passing a law to ban the use of any cell phone device while in a vehicle. Texting while driving is an important issue that is causing many deaths and those who cause these deaths and
This type of motivation is influenced heavily by rewards and external incentives. It also implies the notion that “I have to do something” in order to be compliant with what someone else wants me to do. It is a motivation that is primarily influenced by the hope of attaining tangible items such as prizes, special privileges, or money. Although Drive implies the heavy use of Motivation 2.0 by the corporate world, Pink also draws attention to the fact that schools typically operate under this mode, as well, and that it can have detrimental effects on our students and on learning, in general. Motivation 2.0 is also referred to in the book as the “Carrots and Sticks Approach”, and although it may yield positive results in the short-term, the repeated or incorrect use of extrinsic rewards can actually work against what educators are trying to achieve in terms of truly motivating their students.
Hanson claims that immigrants do not adapt to our society. He describes an accident that happen. An immigrant was driving a van that had a bald tire (625). He jumps into conclusion saying that the driver must have been intoxicated. Obviously, the driver ran away from the scene. This can explain a lot because she/he left. So, people might start talking about you. Typically, in some cases this happens because the driver is probably did not have insurance or driver license (625). In the essay he uses personal perspective with his ideas.
After read the Drive, the surprising Truth about What Motivates Us which wrote by Daniel H. Pink, it making me rethinking a lot of how the way I understand the world. The topic in this book is kind like renew people’s opinion about how will the money motivation’s way works in the future, through Daniel Pink’s novelty idea which are breaking the traditional common sense. However, I personally think that the book's reading value is not high for people who are working at the level of management or higher position, they cannot exactly get a good idea of how to motivate employees from this book.
I believe as a first grade teacher, getting students to be motivated can be achieved by setting specific classroom goals as well as personal goals for each student, continuous positive feedback, an extrinsic approach using reinforcers, and a passionate energy that maintains leadership with fun. In my years as a developing student, I can recall the teachers that brought a sense of engagement and passion to what they were teaching helped me, because their purposeful nature challenged me to hold purposeful demands for myself. I felt those teachers helped me gain a positive self-awareness and lessons that I still use in other situations throughout my life. Ultimately, my student engagement philosophy will be built upon my experiences as a student and a mother, the research of philosophers, and the guidance and experience of other teachers. Albert Bandura’s social learning theory connects my philosophy towards student management. Bandura suggested that teachers with a strong self-efficacy would engage the classroom more effectively with consistent motivation, so that the

A theory that supports motivation is the self determination theory. In the self determination theory people need to grow and gain fulfillment by a drive in them. Self Determination is the process of deciding how to act on ones environment. When one is trying to overcome a challenge or encountering a new experience a person wants to gain the knowledge to succeed over the new challenge. When self determination theory is in focus internal factors are at play; a person is primarily focused on the need to gain knowledge or independence. There are three factors that contribute to a student’s self determination and the needs are linked to the student’s
