Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863. In his early life, he lived near Dearborn, Michigan on his family's farm in Wayne County. His father gave him a pocket watch when he was 13 and when he got it he took it apart and reassembled it. Other people who lived nearby were impressed by his work and were interested if he could fix their time related objects.
When he was twelve years old, the most significant event in his life happened to him. There was a gigantic steam engine chugging towards Henry and his father, while they were going to a city close to Detroit. It was the first time Henry had seen a self-propelled vehicle. In 1893, he earned a position as chief engineer. While working at Edison, he learned about electricity which gave him the knowledge he needed to provide the spark to to ignite the gas and start his motor, Ford continued to work on his plans for a horseless carriage which included the spark of electricity. The Ford Quadricycle was constructed in 1896. It had four bicycle wheels and long iron rod as a steering wheel. Henry Ford made an appointment with Thomas Edison within the same year. While with Edison, he presented his automobile plans. Edison, who was a lightbulb expert and inventor, encouraged Ford to build a second model which would eventually be even better than the first. Despite what people thought, the gasoline engine was not invented by Henry Ford. Prior to 1860 and before Henry was born, the internal combustion engine was invented. The expensive cars that carmakers made were too much money for the average American. The idea for Henry Ford was to make a car that was cheaper to own and was dependable for most people to own. The “Universal Car” was what he planned to make that was easily fixed and operated. As part of his growth of the auto industry, he created a franchise system that allowed local companies to repair and sell Ford vehicles. He also optimized the assembly line system in 1913 so that cars would only take 93 minutes to make and that contributed to his success.
