In Amy Tan’s essay “Mother Tongue,” it is obvious that language plays an enormous role in our life. Language can influence and give us an insight into another culture different from our own. Amy Tan discusses the many ways in which the language she was taught and native to was important and powerful throughout her life. Language can be defined in various forms, but I hold and acknowledge Amy Tan’s explanation: “Language can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth.” I can absolutely relate to Amy Tan’s essay because I too came from a bilingual home that speaks urban spanish and “cracked” english. The approach and style of language an individual uses depends on a particular environment. For instance, the way you interact with others at work, school and day-to-day activities all differs from formal to informal use of english. A great example of an environment in need of formal english would be the workplace. The type language used in the workplace is becoming a major concern for employees given the increase diversity of many nationalities and ethnicities working together. The range of different accents slightly grows each time someone new is hired creating a frightening atmosphere for those who have english as a second language. Being bilingual can be both, an advantage and disadvantage in a business environment. I have experienced both sides during my time working for the Global Shell Corporation.
