Somewhere in every person’s life, there is a moment. A life changing situation that turns their entire world upside down. It could happen at any point, during adolescence or adulthood, and the result is the same. When life changes and shifts into something new, something has got to give, and it isn’t always a pleasant feeling. However, these same situations are what gives people strength and motivation to do something that could better themselves if the motivation come from the right place. Motivation stems from strange situations. It can be from a song, a conversation with a friend or a family member, or a random quote that was found on the internet, through a meme search, to post of Facebook. Either way the result is the same. Webster’s …show more content…
Born in 1948 Frank Abagnale Jr. was the third of four children. When he was sixteen years old, his parents decided that they were going to get a divorce, and instead of preparing their children for it, they decided to wait until they went to court in order for him to find out about it. Since he was sixteen, he was legally able to decide which parent he wanted to live with. In a panic, he ran. This was a crucial moment in his life. He saw his mother seven years later, but his father he never got to see again. He moved to Manhattan and acquired a job, but since he was sixteen, it wasn’t a very good paying one and he had a difficult time making ends meet. He changed his birthdate, and since he looked older than he actually was, he was able to pull off the age change. As such, his life became that of a conman. He began to cash out personal checks, and eventually they bounced, and so he fled again, this time to avoid the police, who wanted him for writing bad checks. He was walking down the street trying to figure out a way to come across more money when he saw a PanAm pilot and his crew walking out of a hotel. His motivation stemmed from his need for money, and the credibility and influence he would have as a pilot. He stated that “eventually it became a game, one I knew I would lose, but I was going to enjoy playing it until then.” And so, he “became” a pilot. After acquiring a pilot outfit (with it being charged to PanAm)

Motivation is the number one driving force behind anything and everything an individual does each day. “Motivation is the desire to do the best possible job or to exert the maximum effort to perform an assigned task. Motivation energizes, directs, and sustains human behavior directed towards a goal.” (Honor, 2009). Motivation can determine the outcome of projects, goals, and can set limits on what an individual can obtain or what they believe they can obtain. Motivation often is the deciding factor on how successful a project in an organization is, and an individual’s needs and desires can both influence a person’s motivation greatly. Motivation can also determine how well an individual does in school, college, or university.

After discussing motivation and emotion in class, I felt as though this article would be well suited. The article talks about the emotions we have in response to motivation. As in if our parents were to yell at us in order to teach us something we did wrong, that emotion would become anger, or as they refer to it, attack motivation. The three motivations they introduce in this article are, approach, which they interpret as one wanting to learn more, or experience more, avoid, which is one getting away from something like ignoring, or rejecting, and attack, which is considered devaluing or criticizing.
Motivation is literally the desire to do things. It’s the different between waking up before dawn to pound the pavement and lazing around the house all day. It’s the crucial element in setting and attaining goals – and research shows you can influence your own levels of motivation and self-control. (Psychology Today, 2014) An individual, while capable of determining their goals should align professional goals with the organization; in turn this organization will need to determine the motivation level of their employees through evaluation of the goals outlined by the employee and how to plan to attain those goals. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan (2008) examine in their self-determination theory people’s life goals or aspirations, showing differential relations of intrinsic versus extrinsic life goals to performance and psychological health. They discuss further that when people are controlled, they experience pressure to think, feel, or behave in particular ways. Both autonomous and controlled motivation energizes and direct behavior and they stand in contrast to amotivation , which refers to a lack of intention and motivation.

30% of employees worldwide feel inspired and engaged by their careers (Entrepreneurial Insights, 2014). There are multiple theories to suggest different types of motivation, for example financial and non-financial methods of motivation. Motivation is defined as the level at which an employee feels it is OK to perform at and what encourages them to be that way (Kelley, 2015), depending on the individual will vary on the incentives that make them want to work.
Motivation is the “why” behind our behaviors. Behavior that is usually goal-oriented. The forces that lie beneath motivation can be biological, social, emotional or cognitive in nature. There are, indeed, a plethora of inducements that cause us to act the way we act and do the things we do. They include things like quenching our thirst, reading to gain knowledge, studying to ace an exam, surpassing quotas and meeting deadlines for a promotion, etc. According to Kendra Cherry’s article on “WHAT IS MOTIVATION”, there are three components of motivation: activation, persistence and intensity. Activation is the decision to initiate a behavior. Persistence is the continued effort toward a goal even though obstacles may exist. Intensity is the
Coolum beach local Julian Wilson is a prime example of the type of motivating characteristics one might find in a professional athlete. The Australian surfing star displays a strong motivation towards winning in his chosen sport.
Motivation is the underlying cause on people’s behaviors. There are two major categories of motivations: Intrinsic motivation; extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation relates to positive internal needs and extrinsic motivators are some external instrumental values (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
The current state of education puts little emphasis on intrinsic motivation yet asks “how can I motivate my students?” “Children are intrinsically motivated to learn, to undertake challenges, and to solve problems” (Deci & Ryan, p. 11) and this is the theme of the research. Intrinsic motivation is already built into the child since birth and it is the education system that is tearing it down. Teachers believe that extrinsic motivation or using rewards will improve the outcome of the task and will motivate the students to continue. Which in truth, the learning environments need to be less controlled and learners should have a choice about their learning, content should be relevant to them and interesting, and they must feel accepted in the classroom.
Merriam-Webster(2013) dictionary describes Intrinsic Motivation as, “Motivation to engage in a behavior arises from within the individual because it is intrinsically rewarding”(Merriam-Webster, 2013). Content vs. Process theory describes intrinsic motivation. Merriam-Webster(2013) states that Extrinsic Motivation is motivation that comes from an external source(Webster, 2013). Natural vs. Rational Theory describes extrinsic motivation because a person is looking for an outside reward such as a trophy, or an increased salary.
Employees those directly involved in manufacturing were paid weekly bonuses based on actual output in relation to anticipated production tonnages produced. The bonuses were paid only for work that met quality standards and were pegged to work groups, rather than individual output. Bonuses were tied to attendance and tardiness standards. If one worker’s tardiness or attendance problems caused the group to miss its weekly output target, every member of the group was denied a bonus for that week. If they are late, even only five minutes, they lose their bonus for the day. If they are thirty minutes late or they are absent for sickness or anything else, they lose their bonus for the week.
Motivation is one of the most discussed topics in the present era’s organisations, especially since renowned psychologists like Maslow and Herzberg are dedicating their efforts to understanding it. Companies are investing a significant amount of resources in improving productivity in order to maximise profits. One of these important resources is of human nature. In order to get the very best out of employees, some motivational approaches need to be used. But what is motivation and how do I successfully motivate? I will try to relate one of my personal experiences with a friend to some of the most influential motivational theories. After introducing my story and making a definition of motivation I will address the ideas of Taylor,
