Introduction:
Rituals use a varying range of signs, symbols and actions to express their faith. Ritual is an action, which instills special meaning. It is a ceremony, which marks a distinctive moment and a meaningful action. The Mount Alvernia College opening mass is divergent to catholic masses as it reflects the ethos, beliefs, values and legacy of the missionary Franciscan sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Many components are involved to create a sense of meaning and special moments for a ritual, such as, symbols, language, location and participants.
Body Paragraph 1:
The purpose of the Mount Alvernia College Mass is unlike traditional masses. The Purpose of a traditional mass is to unite a community to come together and express their faith. They also go to be one with God through the Eucharist of the bread and wine. While Mount Alvernia’s opening mass still comes together as a community to be one with God, they

The structure of the Mt A mass contains different specifically Franciscan elements that a normal mass would not include. Our college mass is specific to Franciscans in the prayers that are prayed and the blessings that are said. Unlike Catholic masses we do not just focus of God, we also focus on our patron Saint, Francis of Ecology. Some of these prayers include the Franciscan creed, which is the creed that all Franciscans “swear” by. Unless the church of a catholic mass is strictly Franciscan the creed is not read. The charter of both masses is the catholic bible, which the Franciscan teachings are based on. A charter is a set of rules laid down by a governing body, as Catholics, our charter is the bible that contains rules such as the Ten Commandments “written” by God that all Catholics must follow. Symbols such as the bible are one of the many symbols that can be found at the Mount Alvernia College opening
In this lab, the molar mass of a volatile liquid is determined based on its physical properties in the vapor state. In order to calculate the molar mass, the mass, temperature, pressure, and volume is measured independently and then converted to the correct units. Sample C was obtained at the beginning of the experiment, which was later informed to be ethanol. Based on the calculations made, the molar mass of the volatile liquid was 95.9 g/mol. However, compared to the known value of 46.1 g of ethanol, the value measured had a 108% error. Unfortunately, this was a very big percent error and may have been caused by incorrectly measuring the volume of the gas. Using the ideal gas law, the molar mass of a volatile compound was calculated in order
At the beginning of the mass the priest spoke to the children casually and asked them questions such as what was so special about today. Children answered that
Mike Dobrejcak moved to the United States as a young boy. He wanted to become involved in all of American culture and values. Mike dived into American culture, he applied to be a citizen and participate in all that citizenship had to offer. He was eager to discuss politics and elections. Mike worked hard to perfect his English and education. He worked hard in the mills for his money. Mike’s life was a constant hope for a better future. He dreamed of owning a nice house and not worrying about money but his worrying never ceased. He never achieved the life he dreamed about. Mike’s life became more meaningful when he married Mary, he also wanted a better future for his children. Mike’s ability to be involved in politics and social culture in the United States gave his life more meaning, or a purpose; he worked for a better life. Although Mike constantly worked and hoped for a better life, he was never given that opportunity. He worried about money constantly
The liturgy refers to the set order of services and structure of each service True
The celebration begins by having a ceremony at church. The mass is important since it presents the Quinceanera to God and reinforces the young girls commitment to her faith. (Quinceanera). In order to have the mass, it is important for the Quinceanera to have been baptized, completed her communion and confirmation. The mass the readings are made especially towards the Quinceanera; the reading include themes of youth, love for God, responsibilities, and faith in religion. In addition, during the mass, the Quinceanera “receives the Holy Communion, makes an act of consecration to the Virgin Mary, gifts the Virgin
It evident that Columbus did not find American, but rather the Native Americans discovered Columbus lost at sea in 1492. Since 1492 the Native Americans have been killed, raped, slaughtered, and displaced, and the U.S government allowed such things to be done to the Native Americans. The U.S says they created a safe place for the Native Americans called the reservations, but the reservations did not help the Native Americans prosper. So since 1492 there are societal factors that contribute to the health outcomes of the Native Americans todays. All of those societal factors contributed to a self-destructive behavior pattern for most Native Americans.
Constructed out of the rocks of the land, it is a Midi Romanesque style, designed by an architect from Toulouse. It stood as a symbol of the Catholic Faith, stretching through the centuries, connecting the Old World to the young United States. All the faithful gathered in the church to pray and worship God. The word “Catholic” itself comes from the Greek word “katholikos” (kata-: according to; holos: the whole) which means “universal.” Latour was the archbishop, not only for the Americans living in the west, but also for everyone, including the Indians, natives, Mexicans, and Spanish. At his death, numerous diverse people crowded into the cathedral to see his body and to pay their last respects. He brought together the varied cultures of the people living in New Mexico into the one fold of Christ’s flock. He had truly lived out the Gospel message: “There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ
The two assignments that I have included in this section is my Average Atomic Mass worksheet and Capstone review packet. For the Average Atomic Mass worksheet, I had to find the average atomic mass for each element. For the Capstone review packet, I had to answer different questions on different questions.
The missal of Pope St. Pius V contains the prayers for all masses that would be conducted during the year in the Catholic Church. This was in accordance with the Council of Trent’s (1545-63) wishes that local variations on the mass would be halted and that a standardization of the mass be enforced (Wolff, 66). The
It is also interesting to note how much the scene of the ceremony resembles a Christian church or chapel. The four flaming trees surrounding the scene are an allusion to votive candles at a Christian mass or gathering, and the large center rock seems to symbolize an altar or pulpit for a pastor. The dark figure at the rock bears great resemblance to a pastor of a New England church. This eerie scene leads readers to ponder why Hawthorne would twist the image of a holy sacrament into such a devilish setting.
I learned that in the Catholic community the ceremony is referred to as “Mass”, and before Mass, the Apostle Creed is recited by a volunteer. In addition, the altar had lit candles and sacred images were displayed such as the Virgin Mary and Jesus in the Crucifix. Besides that, I felt out of place amongst the congregation because I didn’t know the process in greeting other members. In a Catholic service the congregation is very active, the members that volunteer have many roles to accomplish before the Priest commences Mass. As the Priest reached the Altar, he kissed it. The Priest had an incense burner and was spreading it all around the Altar; it was my first time that I witnessed this type of sacred
I see ritual as one that holds all the aspects: the language and clothes, of a culture and is the glue between everything. I would also religion as a ritual in the context of providing a foundation and merit to ones actions. Religion does not have to be faith based, although it could be, but more of a constant apathy towards something – being sport, trading, or social life.
At the end of the twentieth century, there have been 159 constitutions written for various countries in the world, 101 of them enacted just since 1970. France, for example, has had ten different constitutions including five republics, two empires, a monarchy, and two dictatorships. The country of El Salvador has had thirty-six constitutions since 1824. The United States, however, has the oldest written framework for the governing of a nation in the world and has
Seeing things under this light, it is easy to recognize the strong link that exists between ethos, ritual and everyday life. According to Aldo N. Terrin (1999, 153)1,“ritual explains itself because it explains life, creating a feed-back originated with it. [Ritual] is a primum that can not be perceived outside the contexts of daily situations of the real life”, therefore we are able to observe it inside the “fundamental behaviors” of people “within the obvious facts of their life”. According to this theologian, the fact that ritual belong to the world of obviousness, makes very difficult any reading of it. Therefore to consider ritual within the frame of the real life, «should be prior to any interpretive reading». It seems to me that the statement
The intimate relationship between the Gospel, liturgy, and service underlies this theological principle. Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi enshrines the perception that prayer and worship shape theology. The language of the people, in partnership, adorns the structure and form of liturgy with the idiom, cadence, world-view, and imagery of the people who are engaged in common prayer. Cranmer 's brilliance was reconciling style and substance, thus protecting the Church’s lex credendi in the lex orandi.
