On May 18, 1980 an earthquake caused Mount St Helen to erupt. It is one of the most significant geological events in the U.S. during the 20th century. The amount of energy output that day was like 400 million tons of TNT. The eruption caused many waves on the Spirit Lake that stripped the forest from the slope adjacent to the lake.
