Mount St Helens Earthquake Research Paper

Decent Essays

On the 18th of May 1980, Mount St Helens in Washington State exploded with magma and volcanic ash which could be heard from hundreds of miles away. Washington state is located in the United States of America. The explosion triggered one of the largest landslides in history which cause 57 people dead and did damage to an estimated of $1.1 billion in timber, civil work and agriculture. A witness to this awful event said “Awed! Frightened. Riding my bike down Witham Hill Drive Corvallis, Oregon and feeling like I had glass bits in my mouth. I'll never forget!”— Jenny Cone, May 18, 2017.

Helens exploded but what is an earthquake? Earthquakes are the earth-shaking vigorously because the earth crust is moving which is caused by the tectonic plates. The lithosphere is made up of the earth crust and the uppermost mantle which is broken into the tectonic plate, that slowly move over a mechanically weaker layer, the asthenosphere, which is part of the upper mantle. These plates have different boundaries in the world, where two different plates meet, all of the boundaries are shown in this map. These plates are pushed together from interior earth, the plate's often collided near the boundaries causing volcanic eruption, earthquakes and tsunamis. There are different types of collision that cause different effects on our earth. Convergent boundaries- when two plates slide up against each other and one may be subducting under another . Divergent boundaries- are two plates pulling away from each other, which can create new …show more content…

As I was saying that there were not many technological advancements in regrowth. One I did find was by the National Science Foundation who has conducted a research program as they have come up with an equation for leaf mass per area which will help understand what drives plants behaviours based on cells. This will help understand leaf cells more and see if we can take that research to help advance plant regrowth. One representative from the foundation said “We are aiming to usher in a new era in the science of leaf economics by merging plant anatomy with mathematics and ecology in a unique way,” This would help speed up regrowth after natural disasters in the future. Though volcanoes can cause massive devastation to the environment afterwards it can cause very fertile soil and clear dead trees to make space for new
