Eleni Powell Great Gatsby Analysis 11/13/17 The Great Gatsby is a movie set in the 1920’s. The main character Nick Carraway lives next to the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Throughout the movie you experience the roaring 20’s first hand. They take you to the lavish countryside, through the struggling “valley of ashes”, into the bustling cites, and down into the bootlegging speakeasies. Gatsby is a secretive man and no one knows the truth about him. By the end of the film you find out his past and his secrets are revealed to us by Nick. Nick was like Gatsby’s best friend through the film. Nick was like a middle man between Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy Buchanan was a woman who lived, with her husband Tom, across the bay from Gatsby. Tom had been sleeping around behind Daisy’s back and nick was the only one who knew who it was although everyone suspected he was. Although there are many characters to follow the main one was Gatsby his life was the main purpose of the film. A major theme in the movie was wealth. Gatsby was known for throwing extravagant parties and everyone in New York would attend. His parties were elite and people like movie stars, gangsters and politicians would attend his fantastic parties. Not only did these parties represent wealth but they represented the American dream. Women who attended the parties wore provocative clothing cut their hair real short and drank openly. These were things women wouldn’t even imagine doing 20 years ago. Everything was going great in America and people believed they could do anything. The acting in the movie was outstanding all the actors did a great job portraying the characters you would imagine in the 1920’s. The costumes and make up gave the film a real 1920’s look it was like watching an old film from that time only in color and a lot clearer. One thing I found ironic was the music Craig Armstrong (music director) used in the movie. There were two songs that stuck out the first was the song they played during Gatsby’s first party. It is called a Little Party Never Killed Nobody, and this is how everyone felt in the 1920’s or in other words it was the persona that was expressed. The second song was 100$ Bill, this song was playing in the speakeasy when Gatsby
The book The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it’s a narrative told from the perspective of Nick Carraway. He tells the story of the tragic life of Jay Gatsby and talks about the society of the wealthy people with high social status. He talks about the conflict between the two huge power Tom and Gatsby, due to their similarity in their money and social status, while they compete for dominance and masculinity by fighting over Daisy. Through Nick’s narration and his close relationship with Gatsby, the readers realize that the motive behind everything that Gatsby does is to win back Daisy’s heart to repeat the past, the first time when he fell in love with Daisy.
The novel The Great Gatsby is set in the 1920’s when people started to change the way that they looked at things. The narrator Nick Carraway tells the story as he was living in a small cottage beside Jay Gatsby’s mansion. Daisy Buchanan is a woman who does not think she should be able to do anything but be a fool for love. Last but least is Jay Gatsby a man who no one really knows but wish they knew. Gatsby was a man who always thought Daisy belonged to him but in reality she was never his to begin with.
From the outside, one may think The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story. However, its overall theme is more about The American Dream and how people are unable to obtain it. The Great Gatsby took place in the 1920s, a time in which America’s economy was booming. At the same time
The novel The Great Gatsby is told from the point of view of a man name Nick Carraway. Nick Carraway is a young man from Minnesota who went to Yale then to New York to study business bonds. As Nick grew up, he followed a lesson that his father gave him, which was to never judge others. Because of that lesson, Nick grew up to be someone who is tolerant, open-minded, quiet, and a good listener, which made others want to talk to him more. Nick lives on the West Egg district of Long Island next to a mysterious rich man who is later revealed to be Gatsby. Gatsby is a romantic who dreams about the past of him and Daisy. He always looks at things optimistically and always looks for a solution. Gatsby would throw these extravagant parties that
The Great Gatsby is a story centered around the life of the rich and is narrated by the midwest native Nick Carraway, who has come to New York in search of the American Dream. Nick moves next to millionaire Jay Gatsby and he notices that Jay throws parties quite often in attempts to impress his past love Daisy Buchanan. Nick does his best to reunite the pair at his house one night, and after the awkwardness vanishes, the two rekindle past feelings for each other. Eventually, Daisy’s husband finds out about their affair and is furious, even though having an affair of his own. Gatsby and Tom have a dispute about who gets to love Daisy and everyone drives away angry. Tom’s second lover Myrtle is then struck by a car driven by Daisy, but Jay takes the blame for her. Myrtle’s husband finds Gatsby at his home and shoots Jay, then himself. Nick ends the story on Gatsby’s lawn thinking to himself. From the symbolism of the green light, to the symbolism behind
The Great Gatsby’s storyline is about Nick Carraway who moves away from his home to study. Rather than focusing on his time studying the book focuses more on his time outside of school, when he visit parties and eventually meets an interesting man called Gatsby. Gatsby first seems to be a loved person with lots of money and no bigger problems at all, eventually
Also known as the American Dream, the Great Gatsby was an intellectual movement focusing on many different things. From the fashion people flaunted to the street gangs roaming around The Big Apple, this era involved the flashiest and the feistiest. The parties that Gatsby threw every Saturday night were infamous. Many people did not know who he was nor have they ever seen him in person. They did want to meet new people and enjoy a good ole party. The early 1920's was all about love, having a good time, and looking better than the person standing next to you.
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, exemplifies the societal problems and corrupt economic practices throughout the 1920s through means of a fictional, but yet realistic scenario and setting to provide a social context to show the current condition of the 1920s. The Great Gatsby also from time to time hints at some of Fitzgerald’s events from his own life that he incorporates into his story which gives it some truth to why it can be considered as partly nonfiction.
Creating a playlist for a movie that takes place in the 1920’s would be a challenge on its own; however, Luhrmann successfully did so. The few that believe in not using recent song hits for an older movie are ignorant for not knowing how difficult it is to use songs based around the films story date. Music is another factor that can either make or break a movie’s rating. As long as the songs play a role in supporting the theme of the movie, age should not matter with music in movies. Artist on the Great Gatsby soundtrack include Jay Z, Andre 3000, Goonrock, Fergie, and Beyoncé.
At the end of the movie “The Great Gatsby”, Leonardo DiCaprio asks, “To live as a monster or die as a good man”? That is a tough question, especially for a female at early 19th country. The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, depicts the miserable life of females under the power of Chauvinism. The narrator and her husband John rent a beautiful house faraway from city. The narrator suffers from what her husband believes a “temporary nervous depression”. She feels uncomfortable with everything, but still obey her husband’s decisions. The husband chooses a large, airy room on the top floor instead of the smaller room on the ground floor that she prefers. She is forbidden to write or work. She becomes absolutely obsessed with the yellow wallpaper in her room. She begins tracing the pattern of the wallpaper. She finds a woman trapped in the wallpaper, then she wants to free the woman. Finally, she strips the wallpaper off then turns to be mad. Both the woman inside the wallpaper and she are free. The narrators miserable life mirrors the Chauvinism is so extreme that the imagined world inside the yellow wallpaper is preferable to reality.
Carrie was more of a quiet person who never did anything to anyone. She worked hard on her grades. She wasn’t a very outgoing person. Carrie’s hair was dyed pink, she usually wore ripped jeans and plain t-shirts. Alison on the other hand was the total opposite of Carrie. Alison was known as the school bully. She never did her homework, and she was loud and outgoing and not to mention very mean. Alison had black hair and usually wore shorts and t-shirts. Both Carrie and Alison had blue eyes.
The Great Gatsby does a fantastic way in showing how the 1920’s was and used many concepts from the 1920’s. There were many details put in the movie that made it feel like it was really filmed in the 1920’s and created a sense of actually looking into that time period. The stock market during the time period was a big deal for entrepreneurs trying to make money, the movie shows it being a valuable source of income, because Nick dropped his dream of being a writer to pursue a career in stocks. There was an underground club in the movie where there was alcohol and dancers, during the 1920’s these clubs were a very popular and secretive place for people to spend their time and money. These clubs were considered underground because
“The Great Gatsby” is set in the 1920s, but appeals to the teenage and young adult crowd catching their eyes with the elaborate and flashy parties filled with gambling, drinking and dancing. Showing off to a less experienced crowd in the party life brings excitement and
The wealthier characters are never seen working, while the lower class citizens are always working but make significantly less money. The movie also has a high emphasis on the flapper lifestyle where women drank, smoked, and had short dresses and hair. Jordan is also noted to be a professional golfer, showing that women were gaining some independence and status with their new ability to vote. Before the 1920’s, there was not enough leisure time for many people to enjoy sports like Jordan does. This film opened my eyes to the type of extravagance the big business owners experienced. The whole film, the upper class characters act like they don’t have a care in the world. The magnitude of the parties Gatsby threw were ridiculous considering he was only doing it in hopes of having Daisy find him. It also showed the obsession with material possession to have a higher social status. This film really helped me understand the social aspects of the
The 2013 film remake of the classic novel, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a fantastic example of what happens when Hollywood creates a successful remake, while also keeping the integrity of the original film and novel. The scene when Myrtle, the mistress of Daisy's husband meets her tragic death due to Daisy hitting her on accident with a car due to a night of drunken fun. Is one of the most notable scenes within the film and one of the most famous in both the film and novel. This scene embodies everything the film is trying to portray to the audience, the classic Hollywood film narrative, using mise-en-scene in an effective manner, the editing of and the soundtrack used to create an effective scene that the audience could understand and could also be emotionally affected by. The remake created a powerful scene using these film techniques, by piecing everything together in a way that could be understood by everyone watching the film. While, the film had many scenes that were put together professionally and extremely well done, this scene stands out the most as it is the most shocking scene in the whole film and the climax of the plot.
