Military science fiction has grown up over the years. Gone are the days when a simple plot would suffice. Readers demand more of an intricate story, something they can proverbially sink their teeth into. They do not want something that can be read in hours. Because of this demand, story plots are more complex today than in previous years. In the stories presented this semester, storylines varied, but there was always once central theme: survival. Characters were built up more to accommodate the intricate plots. Themes have matured and reflect current world events. All these work together to provide the backbone of the stories. Over the past decade, story scenarios have become more enthralling to the reader. The adventures presented this …show more content…
After quite an interesting conversation with a nine-meter-tall representation of Adolph Hitler, Old Guy found himself in battle with the Blade Fetish. He was ultimately saved by MegaHitler. Plots went deeper by placing a historical enemy that wanted absolution alongside a physical antagonist. In Combat Unit, a fighting Unit battled not only an unknown enemy, but also the unfamiliar surroundings it was in. Enemies were Story plots went deeper with the addition of a child in Ender’s Game. The survival of the human race was at stake and depended on the actions of a child winning a game. Survival of a race was still evident, but it rested on the ruthlessness of adults who pressured Ender into excelling at their game. Protecting planetary resources was one of the main plots of On Basilisk Station. Honor Harrington had to defend a species from an overzealous drug lord, while protecting her crew from different enemies. John Perry had to battle numerous foes in Old Man’s War. Each species had their own nuances and that complicated defending planets against them. All John “Black Jack” Geary wanted to do was get his fleet home. However, the enemy he was running from, the Syndics, managed to make it more difficult for him. It took extraordinary tactics to avoid them. Survival meant outsmarting a brilliant enemy. Through each story, the basic need for longevity took on various forms. It went from being quite simple to a complicated goal. Backstories had given more
Through this book, an average American high school student can learn academically through this book. This book teaches the reader about different forms of perspective. This book is told through each character’s perspective and can be seen as a learning tool for young writers. In addition to the perspectives, another benefit of reading this book is the literary devices used through it. For example, a common literary device that can be found throughout the story is the use of cliffhangers. They leave the reader in suspense and they often happen at the end of chapters. The story features many diverse squads of soldiers and their experiences are split into chapters. The use of cliffhangers leaves the reader waiting for their favorite character’s story to come back. Finally, the reader can take organization skill from this book. Throughout this story, the events of different characters happen at the same time and Mark Bowden divides the experiences through the chapters. A high school student can take this style of writing and utilize it throughout their literature. As well as teaching a student academically, the story provides social benefits.
Every war will have those who support the war and those who are against the war. In 1965, those who were against the Vietnam War made their views known by many forms of protesting such as forming organizations, rallying, and anti-war protest music. Anti-war protest music was an opportunity to put people’s perspectives into song to hopefully spread their message. Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote the song “Universal Soldier” in 1962 and her message was that “Universal Soldier is about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all” (Boulanger). The song “Universal Soldier” was used as a protest anthem during the Vietnam War and attempts to untangle one of the paradoxes of life that war never leads to peace through
The purpose for this book is to bring together stories that have not been put together before. Larson brings together two opposite types of storylines and combines them into a unique perspective of writing to inform readers that many things can happen in one location as well.
Many years into the future, aliens are attacking planet Earth. The leaders of the world are tasked with finding the one who can save humanity and the person they chose is a six-year-old boy. This is the situation in Ender’s Game, a 1977 science fiction novel in which author, Orson Scott Card, points out multiple problems in today’s society. The two most prominent themes in Ender’s Game is “war as a game” and the “control of information” where isolation is thought of a the key.
Die Hard, a film directed by John McTiernan, successfully utilized several aesthetics, which offered viewers various meanings throughout the duration of the film. Although the diverse meanings grasped by viewers may differ, it was clear to me that McTiernan effectively applied elements of cinematography and mise-en-scene that resulted in viewers being allowed to interpret a range of different meanings or functions of the elements.
Ender’s Game is centered around a boy named Ender, who gets chosen to go to a military training center by the government, which is called Battleschool. As he grows his mind and skills, as well as his confidence, he gains friends and enemies along the way. In this novel, Ender shows the reader, and myself, that central message is that everything can be treated as a game, but, in the future, you will have to learn to acknowledge the world around you and realize that accidents and mistakes are real. You can’t just start over, you have to live with your faults, no matter how bad they are.
In the book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, the reader's start off by being introduced to the character of Ender, who was extremely smart, intelligent, and fearless throughout the story. He is not only a very important character, but he is the protagonist of the story. Ender has made some tough decisions throughout his time in training and being in multiple different army. Ender is just a six-year-old boy facing challenges that not even an adult would want to face. It's hard to comprehend the age of Ender and what he goes through and how he handles it.
In this essay, I will discuss how Tim O’Brien’s works “The Things They Carried” and “If I Die in a Combat Zone” reveal the individual human stories that are lost in war. In “The Things They Carried” O’Brien reveals the war stories of Alpha Company and shows how human each soldier is. In “If I Die in a Combat Zone” O’Brien tells his story with clarity, little of the dreamlike quality of “Things They Carried” is in this earlier work, which uses more blunt language that doesn’t hold back. In “If I Die” O’Brien reveals his own personal journey through war and what he experienced. O’Brien’s works prove a point that men, humans fight wars, not ideas. Phil Klay’s novel “Redeployment” is another novel that attempts to humanize soldiers in war. “Redeployment” is an anthology series, each chapter attempts to let us in the head of a new character – set in Afghanistan or in the United States – that is struggling with the current troubles of war. With the help of Phil Klay’s novel I will show how O’Brien’s works illustrate and highlight each story that make a war.
All stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies. They are known collectively as The Hero’s Journey. Understanding these elements and their use in modern writing is the object of our quest. Used wisely, these ancient tools of the storytellers craft still have tremendous power to heal our people and make the world a better place (xxvii).
The “Lost Battalion” film was a great film about World War One. It showed a lot about the horrors of the war. It also brilliantly depicted the reality of the war.
The film This Means War follows two of the world’s most lethal CIA operatives FDR Foster and Tuck Hansen, who are partners and best friends. FDR is a ladies’ man who enjoys partying and being single. On the other hand, Tuck is a hopeless romantic looking for real love after he was unable to get back together with his son's mother and ex-wife Katie. So he decides it's to get back in the game and signs up for online dating. FDR on the other hand has never had a problem with women and thinks online dating is pathetic.
The war film genre includes films about warfare, including naval, air or land battles. Films in this genre may focus on the battles, prisoners of war, military training, life during wartime or morality and humanitarian issues of warfare. This genre commonly includes works of fiction, works based on historical facts and occasionally works based on alternate-history fiction. According to American Cinema/American Culture, the genre also includes four narrative elements: the suspension of morality during times of war, the prioritization of collective goals over individual motivations, the rivalry between men and their objectification of women and the issues of reintegrating veterans. The movie in which I chose to do my movie analysis on was not one from the list provided. However, it is one of my all-time favorite movies The Band of Brothers a miniseries by HBO. I chose to do this one over the other because not only is it very entertaining and keeps you want to watch more, just to see what happens to everyone invaded but also because of the history be hide the story. The fact that they used real life experiences to help make the film just made it that much better. I watch The Band of Brothers at least a few times a year so I was happy to do this assignment.

The movie The Patriot takes place in South Carolina in 1776. The colonies were tired of paying taxes and all of this from England. They decided to go to war and fight for independence. This movie is mainly about how a farmer named Benjamin Franklin lived in South Carolina and the British brutally murdered his second oldest son right in front of his family then later the same person Col. Travingston kills Benjamin’s oldest son Gabriel. Due to this he joins the militia in order for justice of his sons. At first he wants nothing to do with it but once his sons were murdered he wanted revenge. The Patriot was about the American Revolution, the Patriot militia fighting against loyalists in the south. The film was mainly about Benjamin Martin’s family and fighting for liberty against England. They did show us about the war and them fighting in it but it was mainly about Martins’ life. They did show us them fighting in the war and how they would line up and fight in the war but they didn’t show us enough.
