In "Night of the LIving Dead" Barbara and Johnny are on their way to their father's grave to put flowers on it because their mother can't handle the drive in the first part of the movie. Barbara sees a man in the distance and is nervous walking around in the distance, so Johnny decides to make a joke out of it by telling her "they're coming to get you, Barbara". Barbara goes to apologize to the man for her brother's actions when he attacks her. Johnny runs in to save her and she runs away while Johnny fights the man. The man wins knocking Johnny to the ground hitting his head on a tombstone and killing him. Barbara runs to an abandoned house to hide from the man. The 1946 film The Killers is a renowned film noir based off of Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same title, focusing on the detailed backstory and investigation for the motive of the murder of Pete Lund/Ole Anderson, commonly known and referred to as “The Swede.” A film noir is a term made originally to describe American mystery and thriller movies produced in the time period from 1944-1954, primarily marked by moods of menace, pessimism, and fatalism. Although the film does not focus on the war itself at all, it still puts forth interesting new ways in how gender relations can be stereotypical as well as divergent proceeding the Second World War.
Tombstone was released December 25, 1993 and made $6,454,752 in the first week. Tombstone is based in the city of Tombstone in the Arizona Territory during the 1880s. The movie is about the conflict that an ex-cattle town sheriff and his family face. Wyatt Earp, played by Kurt Russell, his older Brother Virgil Earp, (Sam Elliott), and his younger brother Morgan Earp, (Bill Paxton), come to Tombstone to become miners. When they first get off the wagon at the hotel, the county sheriff greets them and gives them a tour and they come to a saloon put out the business by Ike Clanton, (Stephen Lang). Wyatt throws Clanton out of the saloon. Milt Joyce, (Pat Brady) cuts Wyatt in on 25% of the houses takings a night. After this walking back to his brother Ike shows up with a shotgun to deal with Wyatt; at this time, we are introduced to Doc. Holiday, (Val Kilmer) who hollers at Ike so to alert the Earps of what is coming. Due to this no blood was shed. Then a stagecoach rolls into town. On the coach is a play company staring Josephine Marcus, (Dana Delany). Wyatt is immediately attracted to her and she notices him down the road and is attracted as well. Then the Earps and Doc go to the Bird Cage Theater where they take their wives: Wyatt’s wife Mattie, (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson), Virgil’s wife Allie, (Paula Malcomson) and Morgan’s wife Louisa, (Lisa Collins) and Doc’s girl Kate, (Joanna Pacula). During the play, the Cowboy’s gang was watching as well but they were shooting their guns
The vision Christopher Nolan had for The Prestige (2006) was to add to the outbreak of street magician film, whilst playing a large dramatic subplot equal in grandeur to the magical performances within the film. In the final sequence of the film, I will analyse how the cinematography and sound resolves the plot so that it summarises the themes present in the film, whilst also invoking a response from the audience. Nolan predominantly uses close up shots, non-diegetic sound (music) and dialogue collaboratively to convey the dramatic, personal subplot of the characters and their relationships, whilst appealing to the audience bringing forth an emotional response from the audience. The heavy, slow, dramatic atmosphere of the ending sequence uses various techniques to summarise and uncover the underlying mysteries of the events throughout the film and consolidate themes introduced during the exposition.
The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.
Post modernism can be seen as a turning against structuralism and the rigid thinking of genre. Shaun of the Dead(Focus) is a postmodern film as a combination of two genres: horror and comedy. Horror and comedy are both opposites but did very well together in this film. Shaun of the Dead is a post-modern as it had all of the elements of a horror film but is in fact a comedy. The film was directed and written by “Edgar Wright” (Wright) and co-written by “Simon Peggs” (Peggs). The film is a hybrid romantic, zombie and a comedy. These genres contradict each other therefore resulting the film to be seen as a comedy as these opposing genres are not normally combined with each other.
Facing Death is a compelling documentary on, oftentimes, the final journey patients and their families will venture through together in life. The documentary seeks to capture how the patients and their families respond to the inevitability of death. The film includes families who respond to the issue by allowing their family member, the patient, to pass through the door of death without aggressive care, while there are yet other families who insist on everything being done to delay the moment of death. This topic of fighting death is attributed with producing much debate. On one hand are those who do not see the point of fighting death, however, on the other hand, there are those who believe that delaying death and staying alive is what ought to be done. Personally, from what I understand of either party, I think that I am a part of the later party. In addition, this issue naturally delves into what one believes occurs after death, as it is an issue dealing directly with death. This also compels me to view this topic from the viewpoint of the later party.
In the film, Night of the Living Dead, the movie starts with two siblings, John and Barbara, driving to their father's grave to drop off flowers. John is reluctant to be there and is eager to leave while Barbara is trying to pray. John teases her like when they were children saying “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!” when they both see an unknown man. Barbara goes to apologize to the unknown man but it seems he is dazed and kills John. Barbara escapes and finds herself at an empty house. In the house, she meets Ben, who borders up to the windows after taking down 3 undead. After a bit of listening to a radio for the current status of the state of emergency, Harry and Tom come upstairs. We learn that two men, two women, and a child had been in the basement of the house during Barbara’s and Ben’s struggle with the undead. After much argumentation on if the basement or upstairs was safer between Harry and Ben, Harry went back downstairs to his wife and child. Tom and his wife, Judy, stayed upstairs with Ben believing they could properly border up the windows together. After much convincing from Helen, Harry’s wife, Harry and she join the others upstairs. While listening on the radio, they are given more updates of the state of emergency. The radio announcer suggests instead of staying in place, to now go to one of the designated “safe areas”. When places are announced, Tom says that one of the
Shaun Of The Dead is constructed like a horror movie postmodernism as a combination of two of the opposition - the horror and comedy genres. It can be seen to the postmodern also turned against structured and rigid thinking of the horror movies. Shaun Of The Dead is a postmodern because it consists of all the elements of a horror movie, but in fact is a comedy, Shaun of the Dead was written by Edgar Wright and co-author Simon Page, the film is a hybrid romantic, coma, and comedy, and this type contradict thus each other than the film led to be seen as a comedy, as traditionally is not a combination of these types usually opposed to each other. Shaun of the Dead is a contemporary version of the horror film because it still follows the laws and conventions of the horror film, which consists of blood and gore, zombies and isolation this whole iconography of popular horror movies. Another way Shaun Of The Dead contrasts with the horror and the theory of character Propp films is by replacing the main character to lead the male cool and strong ordinary boy who works in a shop selling electronic devices with slacker him from a friend who adds initially Another element of humor in the film due to lack of The presence of the typical characteristics of a hero.
Die Hard, a film directed by John McTiernan, successfully utilized several aesthetics, which offered viewers various meanings throughout the duration of the film. Although the diverse meanings grasped by viewers may differ, it was clear to me that McTiernan effectively applied elements of cinematography and mise-en-scene that resulted in viewers being allowed to interpret a range of different meanings or functions of the elements.
Citizens were encouraged to remain behind locked doors. As Ben drags the decaying body upstairs to one of the rooms, survivors who had been hiding in the cellar frighten Barbara as they enter the living room. Two of the five people hiding in the basement identify themselves as Harry Cooper (Karl Hardman) and Tom (Keith Wayne). The controlling, know-it-all Harry insists that the cellar was the safest place to be, while Ben insists that the cellar is a death trap. Harry’s wife Helen Cooper remains in the basement with their injured daughter Karen (Kyra Schon) while Tom brings his girlfriend Judy (Judith Ridley) upstairs. Ben tells Harry that he could be be boss down in the cellar, but up in the living room, Ben is in charge. The group then watches another broadcaster report that the “undead” were coming back to life and were seeking living victims. Space and military experts hypothesized that the ride of the dead was due to large amounts of radiation that had been brought into the atmosphere. The group attempts to escape the farmhouse, but their plan goes terribly wrong when they were trying to fill the truck with gas. While the truck’s tank is being filled, it catches on fire due to the discarded torch on the ground nearby. The truck explodes with both Tom and Judy in it. Ben races back to the house and kicks the door open after finding it locked. Outside, the undead feed on the remains of the
They rode the golf cart to the west end of town and then set off some of the explosives. Having detonated the bombs they got every zombie within a five-mile radius headed in their direction and away from the school.
The Wild West, following the civil war, and even after reconstruction, was a place filled with surprising and fascinating characters, including the well-known and quite stereotypical character of the western cowboy. Though not all cowboys are presented in a bad or harsh manner, some, including the ones in George P. Cosmatos’ gritty and bloody “shoot ‘em up” western film, are.
Benny is now fifteen and has to get a job to keep up his rations. Benny goes on search for a job and comes out short, so he dreadfully accepted Tom’s offer of going into the “family business” with him. After training, Benny and Tom go out into the Ruin together, which alternately changed Benny’s and my view on zombies forever.
Horror films are movies that aim to elicit a strong physiological reaction in the viewer, such as raised heartbeat and fear. Three horror films by the names of Psycho, Scream and The Messengers will be analysed and compared to an episode of the popular children’s show Shaun the Sheep. Five elements will be addressed in this analysis, those being camera techniques, Mise-en-scene, Editing, Lighting and Sound.
Corpse Bride is a beautiful movie about love, death, and sacrifices, in a classic Tim Burton style the movie is dark but with a gradual light. The living world is portrayed as dull and nearly colorless but the land of the dead is a completely different situation because it is full of color and excitement. Although this movie sounds like a horror film just by the title and the appearance of the cover art but it is the exact opposite. This movie is very well written and played out, it may one of the most beautiful and touching animated love stories. Tim Burton is an excellent writer, animator, director, artist, and producer known for his dark and gothic works so this movie does not fall short of any expectations. Many people compare Corpse Bride to other Tim Burton movies because of its eerie vibes and uniqueness. (Member reviews for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride | Common Sense Media.).
