MOVING FROM CONTROL TO COMMITMENT The perspective on managing human resources in any organizational structure that I have today writing this essay is far more different from what I thought it was before I took up this subject. Human resource is a very intriguing concept that today carries utmost importance in maintaining a healthy work culture. All through the various readings in the course work not limiting to 2.1 to 2.7 project the importance of human resource management in a wide spectrum. Man, has evolved into a superior being in the ecological niche because of the ability to think, emote and analyze that sets us apart from rest of the species. people are intrinsically motivated to reach objectives to which they are committed. People exercise self-direction/self-control. People seek responsibility. The image on the right is an interesting depiction of the concept of theory X and theory Y. It shows how an individual can be happy and outgoing with theory Y but feel restricted and over powered with theory X. Before we understand the concepts of HR management based on Theory X and Theory Y and control Vs commitment as discussed in the readings, an insight at the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs would provide better foundation for understanding the same. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology that states that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others. Our most basic need is for physical survival, and this will be the first thing that motivates our behavior. Once that level is fulfilled the next level up is what motivates us, and so on. From this we can deduce that, when basic needs of any individual are satisfied he looks for the higher needs such as esteem and self-actualization as depicted in the picture. In any average organization, basic needs of a working individual will be fulfilled through the salaries, incentives etc., however, the higher needs only are achieved through job satisfaction and contentment. This concept can form a strong basis in understanding further HR
