Mr. Boseman did show a form of sexual discrimination, which was determined by him not paying Julia Kate the same as the other three men in her office. Kate’s letter is asking for her pay to be reviewed and changed so it is not showing discrimination in her work. I agree that some people should be paid based on their qualifications and responsibilities. For example, “rational (and legal) compensation systems set and adjust pay levels based on a number of factors, including the credentials, experience supervisory responsibilities, and of course the job performance of the incumbents” (Thorne, Ferrell, & Ferrell, 2011). If the job does not list that you have to have a particular degree to do the job, the individual that has a degree should not
The literature and material that has arisen because of Steve Bartman’s life does little to tell of who he is. Bartman repeatedly declined to speak, even when it would be lucrative for himself. The infamous Steve Bartman incident occurred on October 14, 2003 with the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. He almost caught a foul ball that controversially might have been caught by outfielder Moisés Alou and turned the tide of the game they lost 8-3. The outpouring of blame and thrown objects forced Bartman, an avid Cubs fan, to leave, and even to sequester himself in his house for protection. This has raised issues related to
Even though I do think government should protect us against aggression, I mostly agree with Wellman’s liberal view of what the purpose of government is. In his opinion essay David Jay Wellman tells us that purpose of government is “to ensure the well-being of its citizens by providing necessary public services that the people cannot effectively procure on their own” (Wellman 1). I think he is correct. If government wasn’t here to provide certain things who would we get these things from? For example, the government is in charge of creating welfare for all of us. If government didn’t exist it would be difficult for certain people to survive without that
Professor Grossman’s mysterious request leaves student David Dypsvik perplexed. The professor has dropped a bombshell not only wanting David to market his book but to find Yossar Devan a man who may or may not have existed. To sweeten the pot of David’s acceptance the professor suspends him for eight weeks citing that his last paper was plagiarized. Without using footnotes David has no proof that he didn’t copy it leaving the student in a quandary. “David hadn’t even had time to make up his mind of what to do. But life consisted of random events that lead to opportunities. In the past he had never been brave enough to jump on any of them. Maybe it was time he changed his ways? ‘If I accept….When do I start if I accept?’ he asked.”
Imagine being told that you do not need as much pay as a man because your husband is a professor and you do not need the money. This was the truth for Maxine Lampe when she addressed the school district about being paid less. Before her husband was done with graduate school, she brought the issue up with the school where she worked and was told that she could not get the head-of-household pay that men received, even though she was the breadwinner. This is not the only account of this happening. All over the country, women are getting paid less than men and being told that it’s okay. It is not okay.
Tom Wayman’s poem, “Did I Miss Anything?,” details a teacher’s thoughts when being asked by a student if he or she missed anything from class. The speaker, which is the teacher, uses a sarcastic and passive-aggressive tone, repetition, and allusion to inform the student that he or she is not as important as the entire class, and that certain decisions have consequences. The first stanza provides a sense of sarcasm when the teacher says “Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here we sat with our hands folded on our desks in silence, for the full two hours” after being asked by a student if he or she missed anything from class.
According to Hayes, a bias still exists as there is not a state of the union that pays women the same wage as men, dollar for dollar (2012). Undeniably, discrimination can have a significant impact on females as employers base their decisions on irrelevant information, placing women in groups instead of evaluating them through past job experiences, educational background, credentials and their ability to perform the tasks required. Discrimination based on appearances and characteristics rather than their ability is detrimental to a woman’s potential to perform the same job functions as a men. Women can be mentally, emotionally and physically affected by this type of gender discrimination. Women can develop depression, suffer from malnutrition as they may stop eating and suffer from the anxieties of pursuing meaningful employment, thus, preventing them from seeking and obtaining career-oriented and higher paying occupations.
(a) that pay for the same work at piece rates shall be calculated on the basis of the same unit of measurement;
In conclusion it has been proven that inequality still exists within companies. If women want to be paid based off their skills and not their gender, they need to become aware of the fact that this problem is still around and fight to get rid of it. Carol Hymowitz’s article reflects on the need to make a change in businesses around the world to offer diversity and equality. The change has to start with women coming together and taking a stand against discrimination. With constant change and growth within our country, there is no reason
In the poem ‘Did I Miss Anything?’ by Tom Wayman, a teacher’s feeling of irritation is expressed in many ways throughout the poem. Moreover, this poem demonstrates a meaningful use of irony and the voice on an irritated teacher. The teacher in an interesting way points out that students miss a lot of work that could be helpful when absent, stating that “I gave an exam worth 40% and assigned some reading, and I am handing out a quiz worth 50%” (4-8). This poem is a very effective poem because of irony. Students have the thought that missing a day will not affect students but the irony is that it will. Furthermore, this poem is very significant because the poet point out that the world does not revolve around one student, in which it is used
Women continue to face disadvantages in the workplace in regards to not receiving equal pay as well. There are many instances where women have the same or more qualifications to do a job than their male counterparts but do not receive the same pay. This difference in pay is not only related to gender differences but also racial differences. Women employees of different racial backgrounds tend to earn less money than their white female and male counterparts. Many women of color often face discrimination when applying to jobs and are overlooked for a position despite having the qualifications to do the work. When they are hired to these occupations they are not receiving the same pay as their white female counterparts. This double bind that minority women face within the work place continues to lead to economic hardships. Regarding women in the workplace in general, due to society’s high regard for men they are often not promoted to positions of authority or receive equal pay because people assume that women are inferior workers. (Buchanan, p205-207)
The woman in Pennsylvania is just one example of discrimination that is happening currently nation wide. My argument is that women should not be put into the situation to choose between advancements in their careers’ or children. Women constitute natural personal choices, which causes them to earn less in comparison to men with the same skill and experience. This lower salary wage is not only affecting this now, but it is also affecting their future finances.
Despite the fact that the Equal Pay Act has been law since 1963, many problems inevitably arise in the administration of equal pay laws (Fisher). It has been estimated that at this current slow rate of progression in closing the gender pay gap it will be 2068 by the time men and women’s wages are equalized. It is clear that the business case, as well as the legislative case, has a significant role to play (Commission Policy Report).
Treating employees fairly in relations to pay is important for both employee and employer. The Equal Pay Act 1970 was introduced to ensure that women and men are paid the same for the same role. Organisations that actively treat all employees the same in relation to pay promote retention of employees. Employees won’t be underpaid for the work they do in relation to a colleague in a similar role, employees won’t feel discriminated against thus performance of work isn’t effected. The
The film opens with a flashback: as two planets are sucked into a black hole, each one sends out a rocket ship carrying an infant boy of that planet, the last of their kind. One child, a handsome boy endowed with superpowers, landed in a mansion and was admired by all; he became the superhero Metro Man. The other, a blue-skinned baby with super genius, ended up in a prison and was shunned by society; he became the supervillain Megamind, Metro Man's rival.
Sadly, she is still paid less than the men at her job. If she is truly one of the best employees then she should be given a raise instead of being awarded less cash. It is illegal to not hire someone based on their race, yet it is legal to pay a woman less due to her sex. It should be clear to everyone that women are treated poorly and unfairly in the workplace everyday.
