Benito Cereno by Herman Melville centers around a captain by the name of Amasa Delano in the year 1799. Captain Delano’s whaleboat, the Bachelor's Delight, anchors on a small island off the coast of southern Chile when one early morning, a wrecked slave ship appears. On the slave ship, the San Dominick, Delano meets the peculiar Benito Cereno the captain of the ship, and Babo, the servant of Benito Cereno. As Captain Delano begins to ask Benito of the ship's past, Benito begins to have coughing fits where Babo answers the question for him. On one of the instances, Captain Delano sees a large African slave by the name of Atufal, who is the only chained slave, Delano inquires why is that so. Benito answers saying that all he has to do is pardon himself, and so Atufal will be free, but he refuses to do so. Babo then pitches in explaining how Atufal was once a great king while he says how he used to be a slave to a black man.

This collection of stories begins when the narrator Yunior and his brother Rafa who are 8 and 12, are sent to live with their uncle for the summer so their mother can work. Their father abandoned them when Yunior was 4 and their family lives in poverty, sometimes having to forgo food for clothes and other necessities. Their mother works sometimes 14 hour shifts, at a local chocolate factory while their grandfather watches them. When Yunior is 9 his father returns from the United States to bring them back. They live in an apartment and set up a new community in New Jersey. Although they still live in poverty, they do not want for food or other basic necessities. This family has gone through many obstacles, Sandra's husband got injured at his job ten years ago and since then he has been living with his disability checks and Sanda works as a babysitter. Both parents do not have stable jobs where it is promising they will get a good amount of money every two weeks. They struggle to give their two youngest children a few extras. Sandra and her husband try to give as much as they can, but two things Sandra does give them is trust and good communication. I found one person who immigrated from china, one from Jamaica, and two from Italy. I found there to be quite a difference in each of the characters, especially from china to Italy.

However, when their mother came through the door and told them of a hungry family, the 4 women did not hesitate in giving away their luscious breakfast to those in need. The children delivered the food to the family and “a poor, bare, miserable room it was, with broken windows, no fire, ragged bedclothes, a sick mother, wailing baby, and a group of pale, hungry children cuddled under one old quilt, trying to keep warm”(24). The sisters realize what a harsh environment they live in, and because the setting is so pessimistic, they try to share the little wealth they have so that everyone may live long full lives. The setting in which they live, houses many people who have even less wealth than their own family. However, because of this dreadful place, they try and make sure that their community, or their family, is taken care of, even at the expense of their luxuries.
Just because Lindo didn’t talk about her fiancé, Rich, she assumed that she hated him. She believed that when her mother remarked on Rich’s freckles, she was trying to be mean.
