A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. John Swales defines a discourse community as "groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals." The community I choose to identify with is special education. Special education teachers, or aids, really dedicate themselves and their time to others who need special assistance or treatment. The California Department of Education supports high quality educational programs for California’s big student population. According to the ideas from the federal government, the variety of the education working environment is one of the fastest growing areas of the American economy. The importance in understanding this career includes emotional, and physical growth of each student. Working with students who have disabilities can be very rewarding, but it is sometimes emotionally demanding and physically draining. Before stepping into the job of becoming a special education teacher, it is important to understand the patience that is needed in order to work with special children.
The writer’s purpose is that students’ in their writing should feel that they can write a strong discourse freely in confidence. The writer explains that the line is visible between a student and a teacher/scholar. Which is true but he goes onto explain that this also creates a barrier between discourses as well, especially in writing. Students’ feel that they have no right to interject an opinion into a conversation that’s “not their place”. This can reflect a student's’ writing as a result could deduce their argument in a discourse since they feel they can not speak in freely with confidence. The writer wants students’ to avoid having that lack of confidence with use of manipulation. Instead of speaking out of spite, you can create a commonplace of putting yourself into the perspective that you can speak freely and your audience can understand your argument.
According to Porter, “A ‘discourse community’ is a group of individuals bound by a common interest who communicate through approved channels and whose discourse is regulated. A discourse community shares assumptions about what objects are appropriate for examination and discussion, what constitutes ‘evidence’ and ‘validity’ and what formal conventions are followed (38-39).” These five texts collectively constitute a community of discourse through their application of common language norms, characteristics, patterns and rhetorical strategies. All of the authors are writing about corresponding ideas and discussing their identical goals; the prevalence of gender inequality in the legal profession and the unjust consequences derived from it. Similarly, all five sources intentions are to oppose the standard viewpoint that gender inequality has diminished and provide evidence to support this claim. Their ideas of remedying gender inequality in the legal profession overlap as well as contradict one another.
Mrs. Nelson is writing about the recent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, where many white supremacists are protesting with former KKK member to get their ¨country back.¨ Nelson is writing to the American people who are staying silent. Nelson is telling them to stand up and speak out against open racism. Nelson talks about how her ancestors, slaves, were never treated right. Nelson talks about how many things still did not change. Nelsons tone throughout the article was angry. Nelson seemed very upset about the situation. Nelson herself is African American which makes her a credible person to write this article. The author argues U.S citizens need to stand up against racism, and she supports her argument with her angry tone, implicit claims about privilege, and appeals to pathos.
One assignment I’ve done well on this year is the letter we wrote to Anne Northrup. In the letter we had to use primarily: ethos, pathos, and logos to convince Mrs.Northrup to do something we would like her to do. On this particular assignment, my improvement on using these rhetorical devices was evident. I chose to use this assignment as backing evidence for my improvement on the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, because this it contains the best evidence for me to do so. All the rhetorical devices I used were highly effective such as these: “Aren’t college owners rich enough already?” and “Would free college for all U.S. citizens hurt owners even in the slightest way?”.
A discourse community is a group of people or communicators who share the same common goals or interests and use different forms of communication to achieve these goals. Some of these forms of communication may range from reading, writing, the use of technology such as blogging and emailing, and even visual art such as painting and drawing. As an English major focusing on the aspect of creative writing, the discourse community I so happened to be associated with is of the English subject. The discourse community of the English literature is made up of many people, genres of literature, and even terms. The discourse community of English literature can be traced back to as early as the year C.658 with the development of Anglo-Saxon literature. Some influential eras of English literature include : Romanticism, Victorian literature, Medieval Theater, Poetry, and the Elizabethan Period. Of course with every discourse community there are a vast number of people who help to make it up. In the discourse community of English some of these people include author and playwright William Shakespeare, author Mark Twain, author and poet Jane Austen , and a slew of famous African-American authors some including Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Lorraine Hansberry, and poet Maya Angelou.
In the article “Intertextuality and the Discourse Community” James Porter points out to the audience that there is no original piece or writing. Porter’s article addresses the concept of plagiarizing. He does not oppose that plagiarizing is wrong, rather he claims that it is inevitable. Porter argues that in all pieces of writing are intertexual. Intertexuality is the idea that all writings have traces and ideas from other past text. Intertextuality is important to completely understand a piece of writing.
In my short story intervention I used a variety of different language choices to position my audience to feel sympathy for Mrs Dubose because I believed that she was once a compassionate person. The quotation “...the moment when all her happiness was wiped away from her like a malignant disease” represents this because the grudge that Mrs Dubose held for many years could have made her a stronger and more independent lady but she used it show her hatred. The word wiped has strong connotations of being cleaned and completely erased. Furthermore, this created diction showing a blackboard being completely wiped suggesting that Mrs Dubose’s happiness was taken away from her in a single wipe. The harsh “ed” sound in the pronunciation of the word
A discourse community is a group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. According to the criteria conveyed in “The Concept of Discourse Community” by John Swales, Christianity can be considered as a discourse community because of its common goals, medium of communication, participatory mechanisms, specific genres, and its threshold level of members.
I choose to write about what I did in my two academic essays because those topics were the best choices that I understand and can go in depth describing. I wrote about discourse, sponsorship, and activity systems. Using our class book (Writing About Writing) along with in class activities i was able to get a firm understanding on these topics.
Critical discourse digs deeper into the underlying structures of the organization and reveals how the power of meaning is used by the owners of the means of production is to perpetuate their privileges at the expense of the operating groups in the organization. Power and politics dominate the social interactions in organizations. Critics are convinced that all decisions in organizations are the result of power exerted by decision makers. In contrast to the proponents of the pluralist vision it is not the intention of critical researchers to help managers to better control decision-making processes by revealing its political aspects, but they are calling for a democratic form of decision-making by a radical transformation of the power relations (Alvesson & Willmott, 1996).
When returning from a month in Ghana, West Africa, I sat down at the kitchen table with my mother. She asked me if I, a third year Bible College student, could help her understand a passage of scripture she read earlier that day. The passage was 1 Peter 3:18-22. We discussed the confusion surrounding the strange mentioning of Noah, spirits, Jesus descending in Hell and suffering for righteousness sake. When I could not answer my mother’s questions surrounding this seemingly peculiar passage, I decided to do something about it.
My thoughts on the meaning of these two ways of thinking about discourse leads me to believe that the power of leaders emerge from the actions of their followers instead of the cause of it. I see it as being a procedure or project instead of it being a personal characteristic or as position of
