Learning Style’s Inventory At the beginning of the semester in Education 2110, all of the students in Mrs. Ross’ class were required to take a learning style assessment. This is an assessment that is essential for future teachers to take so that they are able to identify not only how they learn, but also how they will most likely teach. After the students identified what their learning style was, Mrs. Ross suggested that the student’s personal learning style could help determine whether they should go into primary or secondary education. While many of the students already knew what their learning style was, some were just finding out for the first time. Considering the fact that I have been in school for thirteen and a half years, I have
Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.
When researching about education, one often finds a great deal of literature and information about learning styles. Educators spend countless hours studying their students in order to find out how they learn best. All students have needs when it comes to how they learn and educators must be able to meet those needs in order to promote successful learning in their classrooms. This (paper/article) will focus on teaching strategies and how to vary them so that each learning style preference is addressed, therefore increasing the level of achievement of each student and making learning a successful outcome in the classroom.
It is practical to assume that students will do better in tasks that reflect their particular style of learning, so knowledge of students’ learning styles, including a variety of tasks will make teaching more inclusive. A learning style questionnaire could be handed out at the start of a course which, once completed will inform the teacher about the learning styles of the students.
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
From doing the Learning Style Inventory, I learned that I learn better when I write things down and when I have a visual of the information I am learning. For my writing style way of learning, I found I should take notes. When the professors give us notes I should write them in my hand writing. I just need to be able to read my notes because I write so fast some times.
The information obtained by completing the Learning Style Inventory test was I am a kinesthetic learner (Bethel University, 2013). There are no surprises to the fact I am a kinesthetic learner I found this information out a few years ago going through testing for promotions. There were always issues for me in grade school to middle school with staying with the class and not daydreaming. By the time I got into high school I obtained the ability to use my auditory and visual learning styles to complete high school with decent grades. It is unfortunate that kinesthetic learners do not get the chance to use their interactive style of learning because it not represented in the classroom (Mobley, K., & Fisher, S. 2014). The point being most kinesthetic
Learning styles should be identified as part of the initial assessment procedure, making the tutor aware of each learner’s individual learning preferences and crucially how best the learner will learn.
Learning styles is one of the ways schools have changed over the past couple of years in regards to diversity. The varieties of learning styles of students have become more
“Since a learning style is an effective and efficient modality in which a learner has a natural preference to perceive, process, store and recall new information, necessitates a shift from the traditional large- group teacher- centric lecture method to an interactive, small group student- centric approach incorporating various teaching-learning strategies. Since students possess a wide diversity in learning styles, teachers should combine different educational strategies to meet the varied learning preference of students”(Prithishkumar, 2014). Teachers knowing the learning styles of their students can help them to plan the appropriate lessons necessary for learning. Students on the other hand, being aware of their learning styles that work best for them will definitely give them the courage use that strategy to be successful
I think this entire book is focused around the idea of differentiated instruction. I know that all my students will have different learning styles, so knowing that makes me side heavily with the ideas within this text. I think the idea within the text that impressed me the most was the classification of learning styles. I had never seen the learning styles portrayed the way this book described them. There are four learning styles: mastery, for learners who want to learn practical information and procedures; interpersonal, for learners who want to learn about things that affect people’s lives; understanding, for learners who want to use logic, debate, and inquiry to investigate ideas; self-expressive, for learning who want to use their imaginations to explore ideas. The text also talks about a fifth learning style, one that combines the four previously described all together. The way the idea of these four learning styles were described, made them make more sense to me than they ever have before. I would be extremely interested in continuing my knowledge of these learning styles. It would be great to get intimate enough with them that I could get to know a student and have an idea of what sort of learning style they
What do you know about learning styles? What is your learning style? How do you learn best? What are multiple intelligences? What do these intelligences mean in your life? Conduct research, read and take notes on learning styles and intelligences. What are spiritual gifts? What is the difference between spiritual gifts and talent?
Learning Style is a Term that has been of interest in the past few decades in the field of Organizational Behavior. It refers to the way individuals perceive to acquire new skills, knowledge, or education. Scholars of organizational behavior owe David Kolb who is the leading pioneer for the introduction of such term due to his work since 1970`s.
In fact, I realized, as I continued to read, my teachers did a lot of modeling and demonstrations on completing a task. In addition, they had the ability to adjust learning to their students learning need and style, even though learning styles were not part of the system yet (Hamond et al., n.d.). Therefore, much of my teaching mimics how I learned from those teachers. I believe in guiding my students toward discovery on their own; therefore, my lessons were thought out, so they encompassed each student’s learning style. I taught 6th-grade social studies, not an exhilarating course to garner excitement.
There is a great debate raging throughout the educational system in America today. At the heart of this battle is the question over whether or not educators should alter their lesson plans to reflect the learning styles of their students. Many of us have heard someone say, “I couldn’t figure out what they were saying, but once they showed me how I was able to do it.” This is an example of someone’s learning style. A learning style is the way a person prefers to process, internalize, and remember new information or concepts. On one side of this debate are those educators that believe students should adapt to the teacher’s way of teaching, and that some students will just have to try harder than others to be successful learners. Then there
