Roberta M. Berns, author, of the book “Child, Family, School, Community” writes “In all instances of child sexual abuse, the child is being used as an object to satisfy the adult’s sexual needs and desires” (159). This is evident to see when referring to Marilyn’s story, she mentions how well off the family was and how much the community adored her father. However, she also briefly mentions the almost nonexistent intimate relationship her father had with her mother. When discussing the two, a connection can be built. Berns also states, “Due to their youth and lack of experience, as well as their dependence on adults, they are vulnerable to incest and molestation” (161). At the beginning of Marilyn’s story, she mentions how obedient her mother and how she never once disagreed with her father. It is possible that because Marilyn witnessed this, she in turn, felt as though she didn’t have the power to disobey her father. Despite the reasoning behind her father’s actions, Marilyn was left with years of devastating memories. Berns writes “The closer the victim and the offender are emotionally, the greater trauma the victim experiences” (160). My initial impression of Sarah is major depressive disorder. Sarah experiences nine of the required five symptoms of major depressive disorder as outline in the DSM V (pg. 156). Sarah reports the following: Sadness, change in sleep, change in appetite, loss of energy, irritable, difficulty at work, anxiety, difficulty in relationships, anger, worthlessness, two suicide attempts, and mood swings. Throughout my short period of meeting with Sarah, I did not witness symptoms of manic moods to differentiate the diagnosis between bipolar disorder and major depressive. I am unable to state with certainty if the patient meets the criteria for mania to substantiate the psychiatrist’s diagnosis of bipolar depressed type. The symptom of irritability is present. However, as stated in the DSM V, I am unable to determine if Sarah has three of the 7 required symptoms to meet the criteria for mania (pg.
