Character Analysis What is characterization and why is it so important? Characterization is the building of a character through their description and how they react to their environment. The description of characters in a story is important and helps the reader connect and get a better sense of the character. In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”, he reinforces the characterization of Miss Emily’s dominate and mysterious traits through images of her almost tyrannical father and by her own arrogant and controlling actions.

Lily came into the kitchen to get something cold to drink, when she found May on the floor making “a little highway of broken graham crackers and marshmallow bits” to guide the roach she saw out the door (172). This reminded her of when T. Ray told her that her “mother was a lunatic when it came to bugs… she used to make trails of graham cracker crumbs and marshmallows to lure roaches outside” (172) Because she saw May do the exact same thing her mother did, she started questioning if she could have learned that trick from May, or if it was from a book. Finally, she gathered up her courage and asked May if she had ever knew of a Deborah. She responded by saying “Oh, yes, Deborah Fontanel. She stayed out there in the honey house. She was the

Miss Strangeworth’s intricate personality is developed throughout the story with the use of her language and actions towards others. The readers are first able to interpret Miss Strangeworth as a charming and helpful lady in her community. An example of this is when she came out of the local grocery store and stopped to smile down on the Crane baby. She notices that the infant wore a “delicately embroidered” baby cap, as well as being covered and protected by the “lace-edged” carriage cover. “That little girl is going to grow up expecting luxury all her life,” (2) Miss Strangeworth said to Helen Crane. Helen and Adela talked for several minutes about the slow progression at which their baby has been developing, considering that she was already
