Mulan goes off on her own, knowing the consequences she will have to face if she is caught attending the war as a woman. The ancestors awaken and they all argue about the situation that Mulan is in and how she has went off alone. They explain how Mulan, going to the war, will dishonor the Fa family, even further than she has done when she was meeting the matchmaker. The very scene of them discussing has a very dark and gray color to it, representing the despair that the ancestors all feel about Mulan participating in the war. They do not agree with the attitude and decisions of Mulan. One of the ancestors even said that she did not like Mulan from the moment she was born and told the other that she was a child full of trouble. This depicts …show more content…
Mulan, not knowing how to act as a man, is dumbfounded by the actions that these men take. Compared to Mulan, the men are much larger in size, more buff and fat. Men are shown clipping their toenails with chopsticks, picking their own boogers, and also fighting amongst each other. This portrays how men were depicted at this time, very unrefined compared to the women. Mushu, being a male dragon, explains to Mulan about what it takes to be man, how hitting each other is another form of greeting to men. Mushu defines men as rowdy, disgusting, and uncivilized and Mulan very much agrees due to the disgusting aspect she sees of men. Here, she then meets Yao, Ling, and Chien Po, who all are depicted to show stupidity in men. Mushu’s teachings on how to be a man causes conflict between Mulan and these three men. At the camp, Mulan outwits these three stooges many times when she is in harm's way. Here, not only does she meet Yao, Ling, and Chien Po, but also Captain Shang, who gives off a feeling of duty and pride. Shang trains Mulan and everyone else in the training camp on what it is like to be a
In The Woman Warrior, Kingston develops the motif of comparing herself to a swordswoman in order to illustrate how the talk stories of Fa Mu Lan aid her in combating the racism and oppression she faces as a Chinese woman in America through embodying the power of a woman warrior she possesses in her fantasies. Throughout the chapter White Tiger, Kingston explores the mythical story of Fa Mu Lan, placing herself in the role of the woman warrior and explaining her fantasy of living with an old man and woman, who carve the path to her success as a warrior. Later in the chapter, she contrasts Mulan's grievances to her own difficulties as a Chinese-American. Kingston ends the chapter by comparing herself to Mulan through stating,
1) The Mursi woman talks about what she thinks is beautiful, which among other things involves removing her eyelashes and undergoing other facial modifications. Many Europeans and North Americans would not necessarily find these things beautiful. How do you explain those differences in perspective?
When one compares villages like the Loushui village in soutwest China to the United States, one can notice cultural and societal differences between these places. While the United States is a patriarchal society, where the father is the head of the family, the villages are a matriarchal society The Mosuo women are believed to part of the last matriarchal society in China. Even as an agricultural society, women are out in the field working, but some stay inside to help with the children. Back in U. S’s agricultural times, the men did all the working while the women took care of the children and did all the household work. The Mosuo women do take care of the children in these societies, but the women’s family help as well. While in the United
Mulan is “proud to have taken his [her father’s] place,” and grateful for her experience in the army. She will continue to fight for gender equality in China. “It’s very obvious both
The original version of Mulan also include details that the changed or left out. Mulan had a brother and a sister, her mother and father let her go to the battle and after ten years of serving, she became one of the most high ranking generals.
That night as her sorrows subsided; Mulan concluded that it must be she who went to fight in the army. For her father was too old and frail; walking with a cane. Yet her brother was too young and vigorous; only a tot at the time.
Mulan is then followed by Mushu, a family guardian dragon spirit who will protect Mulan from any harm, and the lucky cricket. Mulan then is discovered as a woman and is forced to be sent home because of her crime. Mulan then decides to disobey her leaders orders and go to find the invaders anyway without permission. Then becomes a leader by defeating the huns. This movie does not only depict women as being weak and dishonorable, but it also shows that women can be more than what they're meant to be seen
Filial piety in Confucianism is represented in both the movie Mulan and Ban Zhao’s Lessons for Women. We can see that in Confucianism filial piety is a virtue of respect for ones parents, elders, and ancestors. Women specifically though in Chinese culture after three days of birth of a baby girl are supposed to place the baby underneath the bed to indicate that she is lowly, weak and seek to understand that to humble herself is her primary duty. Also, they are supposed to give her a piece of broken pottery to practice labor and for it to be her primary duty to be industrious. Lastly, they are supposed to announce the baby girl at birth so to show her, her primary duty is the continuation of the observance of worship in the home.
For young age children, Disney movies has always played a big part in their childhood. For many people when watching movies such as Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Cinderella. They tend to only see it as family films with the same message, which is the princess getting her happy ending by marrying her prince charming who helped her in distress. These movies basically convey the message that women are not strong enough and have the courage to overcome certain obstacles within their lives without a man. But, the movie Mulan breaks this gender stereotype as it portrays a woman with a more masculine personality, opposes feminine stereotypes, and challenges the idea of men being more intellectual than women.
After multiple embarrassing failures in introductions, Ping and the other drafted soldiers are taught by General Shang how to be a “true man”. Through this showcase, it is seen that not only girls are faced with stereotypes, boys also undergo the same pressure, just in a different way. In the song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, Shang sings that a man has to be as swift as a coursing river, have the force of a great typhoon, with strength of a raging fire, and be as mysterious as the dark side of the moon. Like the song for girls, this also places societal pressure on males to fit a certain standard. While Mulan is in her disguise as Ping, she is subjected to feel the pressures on both worlds.
In this essay I will be arguing how Disney’s movie Mulan is involved with racism and sexism throughout the film. Considering that is it a children’s movie that it wouldn’t be so harsh to females but it most certainly is. I will be discussing how the movie Mulan is violent and how it gives hints to murders, the Chinese culture in the movie, and argumentative points on how what Mulan had done is not a lesson that children need to follow in their life. First, this film is certainly a lot powerful than the average animated Disney princess movies.
The Disney Princess film that I chose was Mulan (1998). This film takes place during the Han dynasty and is based on an old chinese folktale. When the Huns invade China, many men are sent to fight in the army, including Fa Mulan’s (Ming-Na Wen) father. However, he has an injury that would make him weak and more likely to die during war. Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) decides to take his place and knows it may bring their family honor in a different form. She must hide that she is a woman from the other soldiers, train for war, and fight the Huns. While she does well in training and keeps her secret hidden, the soldiers still find out she is a woman when she is injured after an ambush and is taken to a doctor. Instead of execution, Captain Li Shang (BD
Mulan creates the idea that, “being a woman,” is being useless or not needed. While men are seen as powerful and strong, women are portrayed as vulnerable and weak. This idea is shown when Shang says, “she’s a hero” and the Chi-Fu says, “she’s a woman. She will never be worth anything.” (Mulan). Mulan also shows gender roles when they sing the song, “You’ll bring honour to us all”, which shows Mulan getting ready to meet her arranged bachelor. This scene shows the message that a woman’s only goal is to find a husband and take care of him. Watching this film might discourage and make girls think that finding love is more important than doing what they want in their life. Another example of how the film shows how the men value women is when they sing, “A girl worth fighting for I want her paler than the moon with eyes that shine like stars, My girl will marvel at my strength, adore my
Instead of bringing honor to her family, especially her father, she ends up dishonoring both. Mulan's heroic flaw may have sent her home, but her overall determination brings her back to her true purpose. Mulan’s defeat did not define her and neither should anyone let their mistakes define them. Despite her flaw, Mulan shows us that even in our failures, we can learn, grow, and become even
