Multiculturalism has many definitions, in sociology, multiculturalism is where cultural differences should be respected and encouraged. In the context for Australia, we use it as a term that describes ethnic diversity and cultural acceptance utilised in contemporary Australia. Australia prides itself on its acceptance of having a diverse culture and on the surface, this can often seem to be the case. However, is this actually the reality of it all. Santina Bertone and Mary Leahy argue that multiculturalism was and remains to be a very conservative policy that does nothing to alter the fundamental power relations in society. Essentially, we must ask if Australia uses the word to cover up what actually is true. Australia is a country made up …show more content…
This is a policy that as a document states all the right things. But, does it deliver? Some people criticise the policy claiming it as a divisive policy and nothing more than a concept that was allegedly lacking in substance and precision (Koleth, 2010). This gives insight into whether or not the policy delivers on its promises. The wording allows for people to slip through the cracks and not benefit off the principles it claims to use. It is said that ‘the modern Australian nation has been shaped by successive waves of immigration from increasingly diverse sources.’ (Colic-Peisker, 2011) In many areas of society this seems to be the case. Yet, even with large amounts of success due to the cultural diversity that makes up this great land, many do not gain benefits from our multicultural policies. Many families are subjected to unfair and unequal opportunities when it becomes education, medical needs, and job opportunities. This will be discussed in more depth later on. We need to ask ourselves why this may be the case. Is it that Australia simply mistreats its non-white occupants or it is that Australia simply does not have the necessary resources to take care of the current occupants of the land and those who the country is still expecting to include in their future residence.
Australia is a land of opportunities and often a destination

Present day Australia is met with the issue of outlining a sense of a nationwide community, after the breakdown of the British race patriot idea in the mid-1960s with the introduction of multiculturalism. The Euro-centric perception of Australia was annulled and it was incapable in playing a significant part in Australian policies and priorities. It triggered a calamity of national identity and meaning. The credence that Australian’s were apart of Britain, united by history, tradition and blood needed to be revised. A people who had recognized themselves so strongly with the British race now had to accede their race awareness and apprehend the notion of being a now multicultural society. The dawn of multiculturalism also provoked a quandary for balancing a respect of the British heritage with the abating relevance of the British connection and to construct a new language of community from the residues of the old British ways.
Since World War 2 and the Vietnam War, Australia has become a multicultural country. Before the Vietnam War, though, the Australian government tried their best to keep Australia ‘white’. After the fear of communism from Vietnam, the government thought it would be in the country’s best interest to try and build up the population in Australia, but only allowing ‘white’ Europeans and British people to come. What is included in this report, is to discover how and why the migrants from non-European countries manage to change the face of modern Australia.
Whitlam’s ‘Multiculturalism’ policy of 1972 was committed to non racial discrimination in regards to immigration selection. This policy enabled immigrants from diverse cultures to migrate and practice their religions in Australia. Australia saw migrants and refugees come from South East Asian countries, who previously, under the “white Australia Policy” were not allowed migrant status. This change in policy allowed for the evolution of Buddhism (from Vietnamese countries) and the Muslim culture from Indonesia
Today in Australia this cultural diversity means that we are made up of a multitude of different cultures were minority cultures are no longer expected to give away their cultural identity to a dominant Australia culture. Instead these minority cultures influence the dominant culture and modifying it to an extent. Whereas integration expects everyone to adopt the main culture, cultural diversity or multiculturalism focuses on social harmony and accepts that Australia will be a nation of many different cultures and views under one nation.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stated that “Australia is the world’s most successful multicultural nation”. All the people know Australia is a multicultural state which is a civilization of populace from a wealthy variety of artistic, racial, linguistic. The multiculturalism describes the difference of culture and race in modern Australia. This difference is trying to safeguard the benefit of every Australian and national interest. Cultural variety is significant since our state, workplaces, and school are comprised of a variety of artistic, ethnic, and racial clusters. We can gain knowledge of it from one another. Everyone has their rights to express and share their culture heritage including language and religion. All of us have to establish a stage of accepting about each other. Everyone needs to respect each other whatever by different culture and religion, this is the meaning of freedom. Freedom is not likely to get rid of limitation or do what you want to do. It is a standard that everyone can understand the differences brought about by different cultures.
Australia is one of the most multicultural Countries in the world, with almost half of Australia’s current population being born in another Country (ABS, 2017).
The White Australia Policy was where only people that had white skin colour could migrate to Australia. People considered this policy very racist but in fact, it was a way of protection to keep the wealth and rich’s solely for the white people. Have you noticed Australia’s current house prices? The overseas investors and migrants are coming over from Asia and investing their money into the housing market and because there are so many people trying to own a house here is Australia, yep you guessed it, the prices for houses are very high. Have you noticed how neighbourhoods have lots of non-white migrant people that are different to you and sometimes do not respect your privacy? What about how competitive the education sector is and how hard it is to try and get into university. People from other countries are making it a lot harder for Australians trying to get a scholarship and trying to get into their dream course which may be very competitive to get
The idea of ‘mateship’ and the trendy notion of a ‘fair go’ for all emphasises the strength of Australian support for the value of equality of opportunity, the ideal goal of all Australians having equal opportunity to achieve success. Notions of Egalitarianism are what Australia strives to accomplish within its society, through the implementing and practicing of legislations such as Anti-Discrimination Act (1997), Sex-Discrimination Act (1954) and Racial Discrimination Act (1975) which were established in order to conclude unfair treatment based on people’s looks, beliefs or choices. Human Rights is also another important element which demonstrates
Donald Horne has raised seven commitments in his book called “An Australian compact.” Two of these that will be discussed throughout this essay are “To uphold the ideal of Australian as a tolerant and fair society” and “To continue to develop Australia as a society devoted to the wellbeing of its people.” Evidence will be explored that shows Australia is committed to being a fair, tolerant society and an increasingly multicultural society; however, the Australian government is not looking after the wellbeing of all of its people today. (The Australian Immigration book, n.d). Australians believe in equal rights and everyone is to be given a fair go. The wellbeing of Australians has changed over the years but the fundamental values have stayed
A good thing about Australian Multiculturalism is mutual respect, this is according to a 2011 Sydney Morning Herald article by Chris Bowen, he states what makes Australian Great he gave the 3 elements which it’s still pinned down by Australian Cultural values, theirs is Citizenship based which means Immigrants will get full benefits of the Australian Society, and Political Bi-partisanship specifically on its creation with Al Grassby having a desire to bring this policy to Malcolm Fraser making it a official Policy. Furthermore Australia’s Multiculturalism is different before Australia’s Immigration policy is originally driven by economic imperatives but now the government

Australia is a settler nation which is now made up of many ethnic groups who share similar cultural traditions, common language, shared history and a shared identity (ABS, 2016). These groups contribute to what is referred to multiculturalism. Australia has a higher proportion of people born overseas than the US, Canada and the UK, with 49% of Australia’s population (or a parent) being born overseas (Census of Population and Housing, 2016). Compared to other Western nations, Australia has one of the most diverse immigration populations (Collins, 2013, p. 145). The meaning of multiculturalism in Australia has changed significantly over time. Today, Australia is a culturally and ethnically diverse country and therefore is a multicultural society. In terms of public policy, multiculturalism can be defined as policies and practices implemented by the Australian government that aim to manage cultural diversity to benefit the whole of society (Department of Social Services, 2014). Although Australia is a multicultural society, there are criticisms of public policy surrounding multiculturalism.
While there is little doubt that overall multiculturalism is convenient for Australia, there are a few disadvantages resulting from this policy such as the perpetual increase of racist tendencies amongst the population. This is due to a lack of anti-racism plans of
