The second concert I attended was the Shepherd school of music collegium concert at Rice University. The program featured music from the renaissance and was a little bit different then the orchestra concert I attended. For one there were fewer musicians. It had a more intimate setting, not a big theater but rather a small rehearsal hall. The musicians exchanged in and out after there part of the performance was over and there was some singing as well. The beginning of the concert started off with a performance of Claudin De Sermisy’s “Content désir (1544). There were viols and recorders used during this performance. I wasn’t very impressed by the overall performance. The muscians were not always on the same page and it sounded bad at times.
The first part of the concert played Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, also known as Fantasia, and it lasted less than 30 minutes. For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. The first concert I attended was performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra had performed Shostakovich’s “Symphony NO. 7, Leningrad” from the Romantic era. The orchestra was a large ensemble (1) containing various instruments that contributed to the overall sound of the piece. Since the orchestra was a large ensemble, just like the instrumentation common in the Romantic era, the orchestra was able to perform in a lively, vigorous manner, probably vivace (2). “A Music Faculty Recital” at Prince George 's Community College was actually the very first concert I’ve been to that included Baroque style. The environment created a nostalgic yet modern and elegant mood; something that made you feel like you were in the late 1700’s yet still in modern times. The songs were mostly enjoyable and we 're all well played. This concert included an ensemble: the flute, the cello, the piano, and the harpsichord. Peggy Bair, who played the flute, was very enthusiastic. Irma Cripe, who played the cello, was quiet for the first part of the concert but gradually became more important throughout the concert. And lastly, the virtuous Gary Kirkeby, who played the piano and harpsichord, served as the backbone of all parts of the concert and made this concert very enjoyable.
The concert I attended was called the Faculty and Student Recital, which took place in the Cisco Auditorium on April 11, 2017. The music that was on the program was mostly what is called “classical” music, as well as a Chinese Folk Song, an electronic composition, and variations on an Indian Tala. In the classical pieces, the instruments that were used were the violin, the piano, the cello, and the oboe. In the electronic composition, the computer was used to make music. In the Chinese Folk Song, the piccolo was used to imitate the unique timbre of a Chinese flute. In the Indian tala, drums from Ghana were used to imitate the rhythm and sound of Indian drums. On Sunday night February 26, I went to the music center located at New Mexico State university to the Atkinson recital hall to watch the North American Saxophone Alliance region conference concert. The concert only consisted of saxophones and a few accompaniments first to the stage was Jessica Maxfield who played alto saxophone accompanied by Hannah Crevistion on the piano. The duo played accouple of movements from “Garden of Follies” composed by the Andrew Norman. The first movement they played was “Spandrels”, the tempo on this piece as soon as they start was a very fast tempo and lot of accents marks. She goes on to play to play four more movements called “Crossed Paths, Blue Mountains thoughts, Fourth Act and Regarding Crystals”. All the move moments she had played gave a more serious and suspenseful tone. The piano would play notes that were very sharp dissonance notes throughout all the movements and the saxophone would bring it more to a tonic sound but it’s still very textural music, and lots of sharps played.
On October 16th I attended the choral music concert in UNC Wilmington’s recital hall. The performance consisted of a concert choir and a chamber choir with Joe Hickman as the conductor. The concert, which was entirely performed by students, had a number of instruments, like the viola, trumpet, and timpani, playing during the concert choir. I had been to very few choral music concerts in the past, so this experience expanded of my understanding of music in a new and exciting way.
The first half of the concert was only instrumental. There were two violins, two violas, and two cellos. They sat on stage with the violins one my right, then the violas in the middle, and the cellos on the end. The violins played a few songs solo. The second half of the concert was only the choir and a piano. Their performance started with the song Daybreak. The song Daybreak also had a few girls playing percussion, one of them had a tambourine. Using SHMRG, the Harmony of most of the choirs songs were very homophonic. The Melody of most of the songs were mainly slow, though a couple songs were very fast, and upbeat.
The concert was performed on the Southam Hall stage at the NAC; this is a large hall with extremely good acoustics. It is a nationally known stage, so the quality of the hall is very good. Generally, the audience was very receptive as it was composed of adults, who were all silent. The acoustics were very good as the hall spread the sound throughout the hall without making it echo. This had a positive effect on the performance, because it was possible for the orchestra to be clearly heard from any point in the entire hall. I was impressed by the large number of students that I saw that night because the show deserved to have been heard by many young people.
At first, some students seemed bored or not interested, but after the concert finished it seemed as if they enjoyed it and wanted to hear more. Also, I realized concert sounds much better and enjoyable when you're in person rather than watching it on tv or internet. For instance, when I went home I watched it on youtube, and it didn't seem that much enjoyable as when I watched it in person. I learned opera is much enjoyable to see in person. On Thursday April 25, 2013 , I attended a jazz vocal concert at the Music Concert Hall. The first vocal ensemble opened up the performance with a slow rhythmic song called Blue Skies. It began with vocals and I noticed a light auxiliary percussion and drum rhythm. Also, the bass guitarist used walking bass and the piano and electric guitar joined in as well. The first song also consisted of two soloist Regina and Chantel who took the front stage to show off their chops. After the solo performances they fell back into the vocal sections and finished off the song as a complete band. For my second concert report I thought that I would write about my only experience hearing songs of the Beatles live. The Rib America Festival was hosted by The Beatles Live Repertoire. The group dressed exactly like the Beatles, even had the same names, John, Paul, George, and Ringo. I had never heard any Beatles songs live before, so that was enough to get me off my butt. Not to mention, it was free entertainment, not a bad time at all.
This afternoon, I went to the music concert hall where is located in the music building for the listening hour, a small noon-time concert which is performed by the staff and students from the music majors. Since it is a free noon-time concert, most of the audiences just wear the t-shirts and jeans to the concert. Dresses are not required for the concert. The performance today is given by the Ananda Jazz Ensemble. They have played “Running Away”, composed by Bob Marley; “Madalena”, composed by Ivan Linz; “Conejitos y Ananda”, composed by Abi Romero; “La Bikina”, composed by Ruben Fuentes; and “Chukaro”, also composed by Abi Romero. Because this is a Latin Americdan Journey, all of the music performed is jazz music. All pieces played in the concert are an ensemble of piano, bass, and drums. During the concert, I was trying to be a perceptive listener; I enjoyed the music with concentration and paid attention to the music’s unity and variety, such as the dynamics and tempos. I also tried to associate the music with a picture when I listened to it and understand the emotion in the music.
