I’ve done several plays including “Beverly Hillbillies”, “Get Smart”, “My Man Godfrey”, and “May The Farce Be With You”. I’ve also done a few musicals including “Urinetown”, “AIDA”, and “Shrek”. I’ve also worked behind the scenes as the Dramaturg and set crew whilst helping out with some middle school productions. I’ve been in choir for 4 years lead by my inspiration and hero, Tim VanEperen. When I first joined, I had major confidence issues with my singing, but he worked very hard with me to get over them. I’ve sung Alto 1 & 2 and currently Soprano 2. I hope to continue doing what I love in the community. I participated in Forensics for two years doing Solo-Acting Serious, Solo-Acting Humorous, and Play Acting. I’m also very passionate about the environment which is why I’m in Earth Club! Before even entering college, I have taught multiple students music weekly for free. It was a grueling experience as I also had to continuously study and learn new topics to plan ahead accordingly so that the students’ proficiency in music grow naturally so that their techniques would be engraved in their body and mind. Yet, even though it was an exhausting job, to this day, it is still one of the most invigorating experiences I have had as a high school student. This choice to teach has allowed me to continue teaching in different environments, and I now ultimately wish to a chance to teach in the JET program. Through my experience in teaching, teamwork, and music education I can bring an enjoyable school life for the Japanese students while sharing my experience as a foreigner that can pique interest for people of Japan.

I have been in the State College Area High School Marching Band for the past four years. I play the tenor saxophone and I am a mentor to the younger band players by providing help with marching skills. I am a lifeguard and a swim instructor for the State College YMCA. I started to work at the YMCA about a year ago. I am certified in CPR and first aid. While lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons, I have improved on my communication skills and observation skills. Working as a lifeguard, I have to communicate with other lifeguards in order to prevent drownings. As a swim instructor, I also have learned to communicate well with kids and their parents during lessons. I have also volunteered at Juniper Village at Brookline, since February 2015. I have over 250 hours of volunteering at Juniper Village.

Throughout my life, I have been blessed to study with a multitude of outstanding teachers, and each one has influenced my life in countless ways. However, my band director, Mr. Jeff Neavor, is the most impactful educator I have had the privilege of working with. I initially joined the Morton High School band program in 2014 as an inexperienced member of the marching band. My first year of marching band presented many challenges, and the program’s high expectations forced me and my new classmates to work harder than ever before. I’m in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra. We are a diverse group made of all colors, genders, religions, and sexualities. Through music, we are able to convey the message that no matter who you are or where you come from, we are bound together by our love of music. We use music as an outlet to combat racism, violence, sexism, homophobia, and so many more issues present in society to show that we are all humans living on this planet together. When hardships hit us, we are able to come together as a family and heal each other, then we reach out and help the community heal. I am a disabled military veteran who served ten years in the U.S. Air Force with two tours in the Middle East. I have pursued many interests to fruition with my first being in audio production and music engineering. My interest in music production began as a hobby, but grew to acquiring a formal education for which I earned a certificate in audio production from the Berklee School of Music in Boston and opened and operated Serial Sound Studios, a local music studio. Education is among one of the most important aspects of life; providing knowledge to our younger generations to help them find themselves and succeed in life. Over the past years I have found a love for learning and a love for teaching other’s the knowledge I have required; enabling them to also pass this information and achieve the goal’s they have set out for themselves in life. Trained as an educator with a Master’s Degree from Xavier University, I taught in the public school system for 13 years. Being raised under the strong influence of a courageous Danish grandmother, I learned that best way to go through life was to be brave and take new opportunities with an adventurous spirit. As the oldest in a family of five children, I soon discovered how important it was to be independent and self-reliant. By middle school, my love of music became a healthy escape from the busy household, and I spent many hours practicing piano and in band rehearsals as a clarinetist. This interest in music opened a door to university that might have otherwise remained closed. Attending the University of Western Ontario as a music education student was a perfect match for me. I had always wanted to be a teacher. I have childhood memories of lining up all of my stuff animals on my bed in front of a makeshift chalkboard, and little Debbie holding a ruler as a pointer stick. I can hardly believe that such a small spark could lead to a lifetime of educational service far from home.

What my job will need from me is an expansive knowledge of music and how to explain it, and how to find other ways of explaining it for different needs. I would need to understand the ins and outs of both music and teaching, both of which I have some experience in already.

I am interested applying for a position as a music education teacher in the Dublin City School District. I am currently a music educator at Wilcox Elementary in the North Ridgeville City School District in North Ridgeville, Ohio. My degree is a Bachelor of Music Education from Kent State University. I am also a graduate of Hilliard Darby High School.
