Musical Preference People enjoy different types of music. Some enjoy classical selections such as Beethoven and Mozart, while others would prefer the rock and roll of The Beatles . Every person has their own taste in music. What defines an individual’s dislikes and likes in music are often overlooked. Musical preference has been proven to be connected to parts of the brain that are linked to age, personality and cultural identification as concluded from scientific experiments. Events in our lives affect regions in our mind that correlate to our perception of different sounds. Understanding how song preference affects the mind can help increase the use of musical therapy as medical treatment to people suffering from mental illness and to reduce stress. In Norman M. Weinberger’s Music and the Brain, it is stated that different parts of the brain are affected while listening to music. When a human being listens to any type of sound, the sound waves travel into our ear canal where from there it is converted to fluid waves because of the liquid in our middle ear and the sound waves hitting a tiny bone named the stapes causing the fluid to vibrate.. In an area that is called the cochlea, the vibrations causes tiny sensors to send electrical pulses to the brain. The information is stored in the auditory cortex, where at first, basic pitch and patterns in pitch are stored, but then as more information enters while we age, the brain “learns” how complex harmonies and melodies are
