My Best Piece Of My Speech On Child Abuse

According to our textbook, Public Law 93-247 which is the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), came into effect on January 31, 1974. This law is regards to childhood maltreatment. The law implemented the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. Central agencies needed to be created in each individual state. The central agencies had to have legal authority to investigate and be able to prosecute cases that involved abuse and neglect. The States also had to develop their own definitions, policies, procedures, and laws dealing with child abuse and neglect. With the amendment of 2003, states needed to include foster care, adoption, abandoned infants and family violence protection into their services.

This paper will investigate the abuse of children and some of the ways which young children are affected developmentally. I will try and present an overview of the major types of abuse but my big focus and most of my research has been to cover sexual abuse and its effect on development in young children and how it can affect brain development.

What I took from Steiner (2012) Ted Talk was domestic violence occurs throughout all financial classes wealthy or poverty, including all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Then she goes on to point out that the perpetrator creates the illusion that the victim is in control by saying things like I can’t live without you. Then taking things one step further, regardless of the situation, it is communicated everything the perpetrator does is for the victim. Thus, the victim is unaware of the power and control situation the person is creating, meanwhile the victim falls into that “crazy love” as Steiner (2012) calls it. Therefore, since this is a subtle process over a period of time often the women who are experiencing it do not recognize it as abuse

Child abuse is a serious crime, whereas the abuser “acts out of commission.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , this is defined as the act of being “deliberate and intentional.” Unfortunately, it was no accident for Gabriel Fernandez, who was tortured to death by his biological mother and boyfriend. Court reports indicated the 8-year-old boy was doused with pepper spray, forced to eat his own vomit and cat feces, and locked inside a kitchen cabinet with a sock stuffed in his mouth to silence him. On May 24, 2013, paramedics arrived to a 911 call from Gabriel’s mother Pearl, as they first saw Gabriel unresponsive and laying down naked in the bedroom with a fractured skull, burns to his body, three broken ribs and BB pallets were found inside his lungs and groin. Remorsefully, Gabriel had passed away two days later. Despite the facts stated by Statistic Brain, yearly 681,000 children in the United States are abused and four children each day loses their lives, there are many parents who still believes harsh physical punishment is the only effective method way to get children to behave. Some, do not see anything wrong with this and others have a mindset of “showing who’s the boss” standing the ground as an authority figure. Soumya Manna from India says:

Our life experiences play a large role in shaping who we are as people. My childhood experiences influenced the woman that I am today. My father was abusive. He abused my mother, my siblings, and myself. Whether it was a domestic assault against my mother, slapping of my siblings, or a daily cursing session, our house has always been in turmoil. There were adults that knew about the abuse going on in my home, including teachers. However, none of them intervened for my brothers and I. I cannot help but wonder how my life would have been different if someone had. Experiencing child abuse, as well as my mother’s domestic abuse, is my greatest catalyst in pursing a graduate degree in social work. Pablo Picasso once said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Child abuse could have broken my spirit but it made me stronger. It sparked my interest in mental health, and showed me the importance of compassion. I plan to use my gift to help others improve their quality of mental health, and encourage the development of self-determination.

Child maltreatment is a widespread issue that affects thousands of children every year. There are four common types of child maltreatment; sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. All of these types of abuse are very serious and can have many consequences for the children and families. The most common consequence of severe child maltreatment is the removal of that child from their home (Benbenishty, Segev, Surkis, and Elias, 2002). Most social workers trying to determine the likelihood of removal evaluate the type and severity of abuse, as well as the child’s relationship with their parents (Benbenishty et al., 2002). My personal values help guide me to distinguish what is right and wrong, this helps me in everyday life decision making along with taking action. The values I have chosen and hold closest to my core include integrity, responsibility, concern for others, and honesty. I chose these values because I feel that they are the most important in my life, and they relate well to the topic of child abuse. Integrity is the quality of being honest with strong morals. This is one of the most honorable values to have because not many people possess this trait.

Child abuse is epidemic in many countries as well as the United States. It is estimated that every thirteen seconds a child is abused in some manner: physically, sexually, emotionally or by neglect (Friedman). Each year, there are over 3 million reports of child abuse in the United States involving more than 6 million children. Child abuse can be reduced with proper education of the parents and with greater public awareness.

"The best way to make children good is to make them happy." This popular quote said by Oscar Wilde should be something everyone lives by. People always say how children are the hope for the future; how they should be raised right in order for them to prosper in the future. While many adults do see the importance that kids hold in our generation, many do not. If you think about it, who will be going to be doing your job once you retire? Children need to be given the best resources for not only themselves, but for the benefit of the older generations. If children someday will become the future of this world, they should be treated as so. While most kids are treated fairly and given the rights they deserve, others suffer from abuse and neglect from a parent or guardian which can easily affect how they will prosper in the future.

Child abuse in American today is amongst the most saddened topics of mankind. Many children are subjected to neglect and abuse on a daily basis. The sex and age of child makes no difference when it comes to child abuse.. Boys and girls are equally likely to suffer maltreatment. The problem is how often child abuse goes unreported. Millions of children across the world are abused in some way, whether it is verbal, emotional, physical or sexual. People may not be aware, but any one of their peers, friends, or neighbors may be victims of child abuse. Every day, someone experiences physical, emotional, neglect, and/or sexual abuse. Abuse can lead to death or injury for the rest of a victim's life, from either the perpetrator or themselves. In order to prevent child abuse society must: recognize the types of abuse, understand common causes of abuse, know the characteristics of abusers, and realize the effects abuse has, not just on the child, but on families and communities across the world.

In today’s society, child abuse is widespread and has an affect on everyone who comes across it. The act of child abuse happens everyday to a variety of kids who are typically younger and scared to tell anyone. All children are born with the right to be able to develop, grow, live and love according to their needs and feelings. For a child 's development they need protection and reassurance from adults who love them and help them acquire the skills to be a successful adult. However, some children are neglected and hurt by adults that they trust. The abuse a child receives makes them feel bad about themselves, and it is much worse when it occurs within a family because it makes them feel unloved and alone causing them to have problems. “Abuse of all types was more frequent in those from disturbed and disrupted family backgrounds. Child abuse is horrible and should prevented! No child should experience these horrors or have them thrust upon them. I will tell you about physical, emotional, and sexual abuse along with neglect. These are the most common forms of child abuse but I'm sure others are out there.

These are activities that are targeted at members of the community and general population with the aim to raise awareness about the problems of child abuse. It involves an approach that targets helping families and children before child abuse occurs and not intervening after the harm has been done. This is very essential as every child deserves to grow up and be nurtured in an environment that is safe and stable which helps in the child’s total development such as the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components. These strategies can be via a myriad of programs such as educational programs via public awareness programs, public service announcements, parent education groups, child educational programs, family support and strengthening programs.
