My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier relates to “99 Red Balloons” by Nena, “Get Up” by Superchick, and “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan through some of the lyrics. “99 Red Balloons” tells about a war and the lyrics relate to Susannah (Mother), Life (Father), Sam, and Tim Meeker along with Betsey Read. “Get Up” relates to Sam specifically because he is so confident he won’t fail. “Wavin’ Flag” relates mainly to Sam again, but also relates to Tim.
“99 Red Balloons” (originally in German with the name of “99 Luftballons” ) relates to My Brother Sam is Dead in some of the lyrics. One of the lines “There's something here from somewhere else” relates to My Brother Sam is Dead because that is how Sam feels about the British. He thinks that they don’t belong in the colonies, the should stay in Britain. Another line: “Opens up one eager eye” shows how eager Sam is for war; he wants to fight. This also relates to Sam individually because he wants everyone to be proud of him. “In the streets our heads are liftin’', as we lose our inhibition” This relates to everyone because they all are feeling bad and worried, but they still manage with it. “They'll call me freedom.
