My Brother Sam is Dead Soundtrack
My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier relates to “99 Red Balloons” by Nena, “Get Up” by Superchick, and “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan through some of the lyrics. “99 Red Balloons” tells about a war and the lyrics relate to Susannah (Mother), Life (Father), Sam, and Tim Meeker along with Betsey Read. “Get Up” relates to Sam specifically because he is so confident he won’t fail. “Wavin’ Flag” relates mainly to Sam again, but also relates to Tim.
“99 Red Balloons” (originally in German with the name of “99 Luftballons” ) relates to My Brother Sam is Dead in some of the lyrics. One of the lines “There's something here from somewhere else” relates to My Brother Sam is Dead because that is how Sam feels about the British. He thinks that they don’t belong in the colonies, the should stay in Britain. Another line: “Opens up one eager eye” shows how eager Sam is for war; he wants to fight. The line: “To worry, worry, super scurry” tells how worried everyone in the Meeker family (and Betsey Read) is about Sam. Tim and

“Give me freedom, give me fire, give me reason, take me higher” relates to Sam because he is fighting for freedom. “When I get older, I will be stronger” relates to Tim because he young now and is tired of being helpless and wants to be able to help himself. “See the champions...unify us, make us feel proud” relates to everyone because they all want to win and work together. This also relates to Sam individually because he wants everyone to be proud of him. “In the streets our heads are liftin’', as we lose our inhibition” This relates to everyone because they all are feeling bad and worried, but they still manage with it. “They'll call me freedom. Just like a wavin' flag”. This relates to Sam because he wants to win the war to gain freedom so people will respect and look up to him.("K'NAAN
When the men was wounded, and showed weakness the platoon leader gave comfort while getting him the help he needed. And when he wanted to hold another soldier’s hand, no judgment was given, just a hand and consolation. A strong bond had to be there, in the jungle among the grunts to save lives and stop one another from going crazy, as they only had each other.
His Speech to the Third Army starts off in an almost lighthearted tone, “Men, all this stuff you hear about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of bullshit. Americans love to fight” (1). This general mood is kept throughout Patton's speech, including an excess of profanity. Unlike a formal address to a similarly large audience, Patton's way of speaking and structure of words is akin to that of close friends, or soldiers talking in the barracks. As Patton continues to speak, he frequently brings up the importance of a team and the role a soldier has as unit. Even if you are the lowest on the totem pole, he believed that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. If every man did his job with the
Edwidge Danticat uses her memoir to show how powerful a voice is to have, how it makes a difference in not only your life, but the ones without a voice, the ones who cannot speak for themselves. In the book, Brother, I’m Dying, written by Edwidge Danticat, which tells us how her younger life growing up in Haiti with her uncle, affects her after she moves to the US to be with her parents at the age of 10 years old, this drastically changes the relationships she has with her uncle and father, creating a new family dynamic. The suggestion of voice is shown in many ways, while her reasoning is constant, Danticat faced many situations in her life that have shaped her beliefs and formed her opinions on individual standings. Have you ever thought of being on the run from an intense army ? Well , in this speech from Chief Joseph , he explains how is army has been killed and majority of his people have ran away to the hills because of the cold weather upon them. He is also worried because the young men now have to step up and lead the chiefs in an innovative direction. This has put him in a heartfelt situation where he now wants to put a cease to fighting , and find his children for the good of his sake. In contrast , he uses three rhetorical devices to release his thoughts and feelings from the outcome from fighting.
There are two things that come to mind when I hear the name Sam Smith- Old Soul and R&B. This Grammy Award-winning artist released his sophomore album November 3, 2017. From his first song on the album, “Too Good at Goodbyes” I knew Smith was going to take us on a musical ride filled with Love, Heartbreak, and Raw Emotion. When Billboard asked about the album, Sam Smith Said, "I wasn't trying to make a big pop record when I made this album. I was actually just trying to make something personal and like a diary." This shows growth not only musically, but a sense of maturity in Smith’s musical approaches and topics shown through the lyrics in this album.
This passage is very significant to the reality of the soldiers in the Vietnam War and brings to life the setting of the entire novel. The soldiers were primarily teenagers and young men in their early twenties who had not yet had the chance to experience life. They soon had found themselves in the midst of an intense war with nothing but uncertainty and fear. They hated it and they loved the fear and adrenaline that ran through their skin and bones. It
After a few years of going to church with his family fervently on Sundays, fourteen year old Sam lost his father, which later on would describe as “Only one for passion, a military life” .
My Brother Sam Is Dead. What is it about that statement that develops the book so much? I think that when you start reading the book that the title interests you and draws you to read it more. There are so many different ways that it can be interpreted you don't know what to expect until your done with the book and all the pieces fit together. The statement
Kish, Ivan Per. 7 The Theme of My Brother Sam is Dead Figurative language in texts is often seen as something to make the read more interesting and people seem to overlook that it actually can reveal the hidden themes that lie within the text. In the historical fiction text, My Brother Sam is Dead a teenager named Sam leaves to fight against the british while his family is on the side of the British and one of the themes that the text presents us with is that war is often times extremely undesirable.
Reflection: This quote is so significant because It shows how the rebels and army boys were trained to hate one another and to believe they are responsible for eachothers suffering. When in reality none of them are to blame, they are just
Growing up, many young boys idolized the war heroes in movies such as Saving Private Ryan and American Sniper. However, the glorified heroism that is depicted in these films is far from the reality that is war. A more realistic rendition of war is seen in Tim O’Brien’s short story, The Things They Carried. Throughout the story, O’Brien uses metafictional characters to portray the physical and emotional burdens carried by American soldiers who were forced to conform to societal expectations upon being drafted for the Vietnam War. The literary elements O’Brien uses throughout the story to convey this theme are symbolism, imagery, tone, and inner conflict of the protagonist.
He believes that their is a possibility that people are needlessly dying for a war that doesn’t make any sense. This makes him an outsider in his hometown because the way that he views this war is vastly different from his home town. Tim doesn’t get the sense of pride in his country for joining the war like his community does, and he asks questions about the war that he feels that his community won’t ask because of their patriotism, and viewing the war as something to be proud of.
Her Uncle, Emmet, is also sent to Vietnam only when he comes back to the United States he suffers from PTSD and becomes a hippie. After Emmet returns from War Sam’s mother, Irene, takes care of him and eventually lets Emmet be the caretaker of Sam and the house as she moves to Lexington to continue school and start a family at the University of Kentucky. During this time Sam and Emmet become very close and Sam spends time around some more time with some of Emmett's friends that are also vets. The story follows Sam as she searches for more detailed information about what exactly Vietnam was like, meanwhile trying to find out more about her father in the process. Not only is this a coming of age story, but also one of a loss of innocence. Sam ultimately discovers that the war was viewed in different ways and had differing effects in the soldiers morals.
THE COMING, which from the title sounds like a horror movie is actually one about morality and non denominational faith. It follows Devon, a half Native American 20 something with remarkable abilities which had emerged at a young age because he was able to let go of fear, anger, hatred and greed and become more evolved. He is “The Brother” in THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET, without actually being an alien. While addressing the nature of faith, THE COMING also touches on environmental concerns, Native American rights, freedom of the press, the mafia, and the power of the government and corporations.
Die, made in 1968, is a minimalist sculptural artwork by renowned American artist Tony Smith. Smith had originally prototyped the sculpture in 1962, when he made a six-inch cardboard model, but he did not have Die fabricated until 1968. The final format of Die is a six-foot cube of quarter-inch hot-rolled steel that is held together by internal steel bracing. To have it created, Smith worked with the Industrial Welding Company in Newark, New Jersey, which owes to its rusty, industrial external appearance. As one of first steel sculptures, it went on to inspire much of his later work.
