My career goals following completion of graduate education in social work are to become a licensed clinical social worker and to open an individual private practice with a focus on serving children and families. My educational background in child and youth studies has taught me that children, families and couples encounter mental, emotional, behavioral and relationship challenges. I have also learned that these populations experience issues such as marital problems, family conflicts, depression/anxiety, bullying, isolation and other social issues (domestic abuse, substance abuse, academic/professional struggles). My ultimate goal with my private practice would be to address these challenges through individual therapy, group therapy and/or a combination of both to help clients sort through the causes of their problems. I would like to specialize in counselling children who have been victims or perpetrators of bullying, while also working with other parties in preventing and addressing bullying and cyberbullying. I want to specialize in this area because I was both a victim and a bully when I was younger. My classmates would tease me by calling me fat and ugly. Older boys would taunt me or make inappropriate comments towards me. Most of the time, I would make the situations escalate by bullying them back and calling them names. My friends and I were considered the “mean girls” so we would do things like: purposely leave other girls out of our group, spread rumors about
There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
I am interested in working with the Hispanic/Latino community of Cleveland, Ohio. As a member of the Hispanic/Latino community I know there is a need for Spanish speaking professionals. My goal is to find a job at a local hospital where I can do medical and health care social work.
While being apart of this field work class I hope to learn more about the hands on work social workers do everyday. I expect to work close with a social work department in one of my field of interest to overall learn. What I expect to learn is the everyday schedule of a social worker in the familiy services concentration, and get more knowledge of the occupation of social work by actually focusing/completing real life task in this job field.
I want to pursue professional social work education because I love to help individuals overcome barriers they face in life and help them understand and reach their full potential. Many individuals need someone to encourage them and give them a push to help them pursue and achieve their goals. This is why I want to be a social worker. As a social worker I plan to protect, advocate and empower individuals so that they are aware of their own strengths and resources to resolve problems they will face in their lives.
Upon graduating from Heritage University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, I hope to start my own private practice, so I can counsel troubled teens. I plan on providing services such as cognitive therapy, employment resources, and family therapy. However, I will specialize in working at risk youth with behavioral problems. In addition, I will continue on with my education, and get a M.S.W in Social Work. I plan on earning my M.S.W. in Social Work at Eastern University, so I can earn a counseling certification. However, in the meantime I plan on working as a case manager
There are so many career path options. What is good for one, is not always good for all. I have been contemplating many different options and I have finally chosen one. The career path I have chosen is to take the summer off and work at home doing day care. Then return to Argosy University in September, to start my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration on child adolescents. During which, I will volunteer with a local organization called the Family Promise of Green County. Finally I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree in 2018 and get a job in Green County Human Services as a social worker. I have chosen this path because it suits my educational needs and balances my family and work needs. My only concern is not having the face to face communication, which I believe is important in the preparation of a psychology degree. However, by taking a volunteer position with the Family Promise Organization of Green County, I hope to get this experience. This paper will identify my skills and experiences needed for this path along with the skills and experiences I already have. Additionally, I will identify my strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, I will create a plan for meeting these goals and gaining these skills and experiences.
When I started thinking about my future, becoming a Social worker was never in my plans. I knew that I always wanted to help people; I just never thought I could make a career out of it. When was younger, I spent time working at a nursing home serving them dinner. During my time working there, I was able to get to know the elderly patients and began to enjoy spending time with them, and just being someone, they could talk to. I also worked at a summer camp and an after-school program, which was the first jobs that sparked my interest in wanting to work with children. After working both of these jobs, I strongly felt that I wanted to become a teacher. My academic concentration during my first three years of college was Early Childhood Education,
Social work practice is helping vulnerable populations make positive changes in their lives. I have always felt the most fulfilled helping others. When I began college, I decided to major in psychology with the intention of becoming a psychologist or psychiatrist. I wanted to work with individuals with mental illnesses or children. Following my first year of college, a marriage and family therapist informed me about the social work profession. He said that a social work degree was the most versatile of the “helping” professions and informed me that I could earn a Master’s degree in one year and become a therapist. I decided to investigate social work and enrolled in an introductory course. I learned that social workers believe that every person
There are many different jobs in direct services but the job I would choose would be a clinical social worker. There are many different aspects that draw me to this career.
A social worker is challenging mentally, being a social worker you help individuals, children, families, and groups of people cope with their issues. Being a social worker interest me because you have to be hands on with your client, and I enjoy hands on work. The importance about this career is having patiences for anyone that is your patient. It's important to me because I believe that if anyone needs help or someone to talk too it's ok to be open with a social worker and not feel like they have to hold in all their emotions.
I may not be interested in becoming a social worker, but I am interested in further understanding some of the ethical values known in social work as well as learning how to properly help my future students with their problems. That being said, my dream job is to be a high school teacher just like my mom and step dad. After hearing for several years how difficult it can be to relate to some of the troubled students in secondary school, I figured the best thing I could do to become a good teacher would be to take this course.
I chose to do research on a career as a social worker because, based on my Holland and MBTI code, this career best combines the conventional, social, and realistic aspects of my personality. I also feel that this career choice corresponds with my personal values, as it will allow me to channel my communication and problem-solving skills towards helping disadvantaged individuals and families.
When I think about a career I think about a lifetime. I imagine waking up every morning and being excited to go to work. Qualities I look for in a career is that the schedule is established, in an office type of environment, I am interacting with individuals, makes a difference in people’s lives, helps others, and pay is sufficient to provide for my family. I grew up in a home where communication lacked and having a conversation about our feelings or important events in our lives was difficult with my parents. I always wished I had a parent that I could go to for advice and understanding. So I have hopes that my career could possibly help me better communicate and listen to my kids and husband. Along with giving them the security that I will
Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
