My College Admissions Essay: My Journey To The United States

Ever since I was able to reach the sink, I have helped to clean the dishes. My family takes longer to wash dishes than most because we wash every recyclable before putting it in the bin. I always threw a fit because I did not understand why we had to wash our garbage, and it was not until later that I learned it was so that everything we put in our bin would be accepted by the recycling plant. Starting in elementary school, I was an activist for recycling. I would pull plastic bottles and paper out of trash cans and move them to the nearby recycling container, even bringing these items home with me when there was no recycling bin nearby. My teacher, who had been in the Peace Corps and traveled the world when he was younger, was the majority of the reason I had this realization. He integrated stories from his travels into every unit of the class, leaving my feet tingling to walk the same paths around the globe that he had traveled. After the class ended, I spent the following summer checking off hiking spots he recommended around Colorado. I had a burning desire to see every natural spectacle possible, hoping that one day I could be as much of a part of the planet as he had become.

Along with my love for the environment came a pain in watching it suffer around the world as human development encroached onto once untouched regions. I felt powerless and desperate to somehow use my individual influence, no matter how small, to slow the damage to the planet and lessen the impact a growing population was having as we dive deeper for resources.

I began researching possible career paths involving the environment that I could pursue to accomplish my goal of having an effect, and eventually found the perfect match. Environmental engineering is a field where I could consult industries on how to reduce emissions and overall environmental damage. I am ecstatic to pursue my passions while utilizing my academic skills to make a significant difference for this beautiful
