When choosing a career there are many factors that I will need to look at: will it be something I enjoy; am I just in it for the money; will the job be around years from now; how will it affect my family and me; how will I benefit from the job; and how will my personality fit in? I used to work at Conroe Regional Medical Center in the Radiology Department and watching everyone scurry around the halls was very exciting to me. I knew I always wanted to be in the medical industry I just really wasn’t sure where I would fit in just yet. Many times I have thought about going back to school, many times I have put it off and I kept making excuses and for many reasons and many times I have put it off because I was scared. There finally came a time in my life to where I could not put it off anymore - it was now or never. In saying this I needed a job that will have a solid future and great job security. The career I have chosen is Radiology Technologist. The reason I have chosen radiology technologist is because I am a hands on person and love working with and seeing different people everyday. Radiologic technologists have a great outlook in the job industry the employment is expected to grow 28 percent between 2010 and 2020. In May 2010 the median yearly wage was $54,340 and can earn as high as $76,850. Radiologic technologists, often referred to as radiographers, are given the duty of preparing and completing x-rays of patients, as well as the maintenance and upkeep of the imaging equipment involved in this process. MRI technologists serve a similar purpose, although instead of operating and maintaining the equipment required to take x-rays, they have magnetic resonance imaging scanners, more commonly referred to as MRI scanners. They have the ability to make a difference in a patient’s live by employing their communication and patient care skills. Working as a radiology technician would allow me to fulfill my passion for helping others and making an impact while working in a career that I know I would love. I have been fortunate enough to work alongside many radiology technicians for over 4 years and have come to realize the vital role they play in Healthcare. The fast-paced work environment and major responsibility is something that I am intrigued by. The demand on radiology exams and procedures has grown, the country needs qualified professionals to provide medical imaging and radiation therapy.
However, if you are willing to take that option and you are wanting to become a Radiation Technologists, you must be willing to take a hold on the responsibilities and duties. These responsibilities and duties may be challenging, but can be extremely rewarding in the long run. You must be very patient while reading the details of an image. In order to protect your patient from radiation there must be a radiation shield over them. But, before you can get started on any x-rays, there are questions about their medical history that need to be asked first. Organizing and neatness can be a major key in keeping up with medical records of patients. Although you think your job may be just x-rays and the like, you still have a physician present in the room at all times who will be giving you instructions on where to x-ray the patient.
In third grade was the first time I had ever had an x-ray taken. I was mesmerized by the ability of the doctors to look at my bones through a hug machine attached to the ceiling, however I was terrified. The radiologic technologist calmed me down and distracted my attention of my broken bone by explaining the process of taking an x-ray. Ever since that day, I have wanted to be a radiologic technician to have the ability to impact patient’s life like she did mine. I want a career where I can further my education, expand my experience, and help the world around me.
I would be the best person for a radiology tech job because, when I go to college to learn how to properly do it, I will get the hang of it. Basically what a radiology tech person do is take pictures of bones, the only reason I know this is because my sister work as a radiology tech. Im great at taking regular pictures but, taking pictures of bones is a whole different story. You have to use this big machine to take the picture. My talents are dancing and acting but, my talents does have anything to do with what I want to be in life. I really haven’t had any accomplishments yet but i'm working on it. A radiologist is someone who looks at medical images (such as X-Rays, Computerized Tomography scans, ultrasounds, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and uses it to detect medical problems. Some of the duties that radiologists perform include: diagnosing illnesses and treating patients using medical radiation. A radiologist can work at a public or private hospital or set up their own clinic. Working conditions for a radiologist who is employed at a hospital will not differ much from a clinic. You will not have to work not shifts or weekends just like a clinic. Residents usually take care of those shifts.
I currently attend Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University. I chose this profession because I always want to help others. I want to play a part in the healing process of patients. Being able to help people determine things going on inside their body interest me and that is why I chose Radiology. The true definition of a Radiologic Technologist is the “medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care”. This definition makes this job seem easy but it is not an easy job at all. We do so much pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients it is physically exhausting.
