In the beginning of the semester, I decided to volunteer six hours at Union College of Kentucky. In doing so, I participated in miscellaneous activities around campus. I spent one hour giving a tour of the campus to perspective high-school students from around the country. This opened my eyes to the importance of visiting a place before someone makes a decision on moving there. Personally, I committed to going to a college without visiting the campus first which in turn hurt me because I did not feel any sort of familiarity which led to uncomfortable feelings. I spent two hours cleaning up around the campus by picking up trash, gathering fallen limbs from trees, and collecting leaves and putting them into trash bags. I spent another two …show more content…
I did so with a fellow Union College student so that the perspective students could ask questions and make comments freely. Throughout the tour, I picked up on different student’s body language, behavior, and their comments. There were a few students that were very talkative, asking questions, talking amongst other students, and letting their parents walk amongst themselves so that they could get to know other students. I was surprised to see that a majority of the students kept close to their parents, some of them stayed glued to their cell phones, rolled their eyes when their parents asked them to put their phones away, and continuously complained asking “when will this be over?”. Some students appeared to be more reserved, looking anxious, almost as if they felt like they did not belong. I was there once, as I am sure many soon to be college students have been. One student flew all the way from California to tour Union’s campus, and he looked uneasy. While discussing the small town surrounding the school and the closest mall, movie theater, etc. I heard him say to her father “I’m not sure if this is the right school for me, it’s just so far away from everything and home”. Change is never easy so I understood each and every one of the student’s reactions because all of them are completely normal and acceptable. As for the guy from California, I came
In my first reflection, I elaborated on my personal goals in relation to my experiences at Spelman College. I spoke about how those experiences have influenced my goals. Since then my goals have not changed, however I have become more determined to reach those goals. My overall determination stems from the fact that I am surrounded by a vast group of intelligent and talented women. My Spelman sisters push me to reach greater heights, and they encourage me to not just be mediocre. Therefore, the consistency of my goals, my influences to acquire my goals, and my aspiration to achieve my goals all contribute to my success at Spelman College thus far.
# Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to succeed in your upper-division courses once you enroll at the university.
My experience began as early as college, when I used to volunteer with school going children in orphanages, and would advise them on the social problems they faced in school. That is when I decided that being a school counselor was the “perfect” job for me. Having started at an early age, I find that my expertise does in fact lie in helping students deal with social pressure, and helping them cope with the stress and frustration it brings. I have also been successfully able to help students improve their self-esteem by making them focus on past successes, so that they may be able to garner the strength for future aspirations. I don 't think age has any role to play when it comes to warming up to students. As long as they can find a mentor, a guide and trust in someone, they are likely to open up to them.
Working as a loss control consultant for XYZ manufacturing company, various aspects of information need to be acquired prior to visiting. Assessing procedures for safety awareness and loss prevention practices, while reporting outcomes, and then deliberating with the underwriters. Within XYZ manufacturing company these areas include the following topics: record logs, the number of workers, ergonomics, the hazard level, training and orientation plans, and previous work recovery programs. Developing a new policy for XYZ manufacturing company will be produced through evaluation and modification of these areas.
Good Evening Everyone! I am McCall Radavich with USA Today. Although I am currently located in New York, I was born and raised in Arizona. At a very young age, I found my passion in writing and photography. I have literally been writing my story for as long as I can remember. When it came time for college, I chose one of the best journalism schools in the United States, the University of Iowa. I started small, taking pictures for the school’s newspaper, The Daily Iowan. I soon worked my way up to being an Opinions Writer, then a Metro Reporter, and finally my senior year, an editor. After graduating with a double major in journalism and geography in 2005, I got a yearlong internship with National Geographic. You know how you look back on moments of your life and think, that’s when it all changed? Well, that was it for me. That was my moment, the year I found myself. Writing isn’t an easy thing. Actually, I would say writing is the hardest thing a person can do, putting your self on display for any and all to see. Writing is the truth, and the truth hurts. I had always thought that was what I did when I wrote, tell the truth, but that wasn’t the case. I hadn’t learned how to write without boundaries until that summer, when I had no other option. I hadn’t known how to write like everything was on the line, because I had never had anything to lose. Now, it’s the only way I write. It is the only way I can. When my year was up, I didn’t know what to do with
The first day I visited, I went on a tour around the campus. Seeing the campus of Baylor, was huge but well-organized. I participated in the Christian Leadership Institute on the campus. This camp helped me understand how the campus of Baylor was and taught me life-long skills that I will never forget. During my time at camp, I have met some of closest friends that live all over the country. I felt that I could see myself at this university, compared to anywhere else. I felt as if there was no barrier between one person or another that stopped them from talking to one another. It was a bit daunting not knowing anyone at this camp, but after a week it all seemed to change. I had a different view of Baylor from the first to the last day I visited. Imagining of where I could be, Baylor is a university that I could see
People say college is the biggest change in their lives. I can only believe this to be true. I would love to find out by attending UW-Oshkosh. I know college will put me outside my comfort zone, but I look forward to the experience. I liked the layout of the campus in Oshkosh and the students I met.
Even at a young age, people begin to ask you what you want to be when you grow up. Children’s answers will range anywhere from ballerina, to firefighter, to President of the United States. However, as you get older, the question becomes more serious. As a high schooler, you feel as if you need to know exactly where you will end up thirty years into the future. Since senior year began, I have tried my best to understand my strengths and goals in life so that I can prepare for my future.
As I reach the end of my fall semester here at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, I have analyzed the habits of mind that has guided me through my everyday life at school. The habit of mind that I have developed over the course of my fall semester was openness. I was able consider new ways of being and thinking about the world around me. I made many friends this semester, doing so I was able to become more open toward people and situations I can across during my fall semester. I will be evaluating how I became more open to people, how I was able to create close relationships with my new friends, and began to enjoy being an Islander.
During my first two years of college I have been an active member in my sorority, Sigma Kappa. Within Sigma Kappa I have been able to participate in various service opportunities and community outreach programs. Such programs include: making and delivering sandwiches to the homeless in downtown Indianapolis, Trick or Treat Bag preparation and delivery for foster children, volunteering time for work within a church-based thrift shop, Walk to end Alzheimer’s, and most recently volunteering to assist the Indianapolis Humane Society where we reorganized stock rooms
As Public Relations Chair of my business organization, my job is to inform the student body about events put on by HBSA. Last week my organization put on a career fair open to all students where they could talk about internships and jobs from many different companies. The weeks leading up to the event I spent every day marketing and advertising the event across all social media platforms and in person interactions, I hopes that I moved someone to come. When the day of the event came, we had around 300 students come out and network and put their foot in the door. While my impact was small, I might have helped a student gain a full-time offer making their lives a little bit easier and allowing them to be a step closer to achieving their goals. Graduating college, I hope to leave knowing that I made an impact and that I help someone accomplish things they viewed as
When reflecting on my life’s journey thus far, I am able to recall numerous instances which have provided me with opportunities to make decisions that have played a pivotal role in fostering a strong set of personal values in which I strive to abide by today. While many of these values were born out of struggle and poor life choices, it is easy for me to say that there are few regrets. These decisions, some good and some bad, have allowed me to evolve into the man I am today. I am truly grateful to have experienced a life that has afforded me the opportunities to cultivate many strong beliefs and ideologies in my personal, academic, and social life. Through deeper reflection, I have come to realize that these experiences combined with my
I learned to never go somewhere if you’re not informed on what will be going on or the type of environment I’ll be in. Never put myself in a situation where I’m stranded. Always drive my own car, that way I can leave when I am ready to go. This experience was not so great but there have been many other opportunities of service I’ve done that has impacted my view on the community. I actually enjoy doing volunteer work and helping out in my community. When I volunteered with Feed the Children, it opened my eye to how many families are struggling and are in need. While putting boxes together it made me wonder what family would receive it and what’s their life story. Volunteering has had a positive impact on me. I’ve gained confidence within myself, happiness, a sense of purpose, experience and communication skills. It’s a great way to connect with others. Knowing that I am helping someone in my community and also having a positive impact on their lives warms my heart. Doing service for others has helped me become more grateful and appreciative for the things I have. It showed me the lifestyle of living pay check to pay check and struggling and that’s what motivates me to figure out this college thing, so I can become successful and continue to help my community.
Since entering high school, I’ve participated in many organizations that have sought to better not only our school but also the community as a whole. For example, since my freshman year, I have been a part of the Goliad Student Council. By being a member of such a club, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to interact with Goliad’s community through various means. I’ve painted the faces of children at town festivals, cleaned the town auditorium for auctions, and I’ve handled sports concession stands for hours on end. Through each of these activities, along with the others I’ve done for student council, I’ve managed to involve myself with multiple residents of Goliad while also working towards a fulfilling goal.
During my time in the Aspire Scholars Living-Learning Community program, I will provide an insight of my experience inside or outside of the Hendrix campus. I will gather different perspectives from my friends and neighbors in the same living space in order to get a better understanding of what it is like to live at Hendrix College. Also, I promise to bring a positive attitude towards the other Aspire scholars who are living in the same community as me. Whether if it is an academic or personal problem, I can guarantee that I will able to help one of my fellow scholars. At the end of this experience, I will plan on supporting the new class of Aspire scholars by allowing to hear my story of the responsibility it takes to become an active member
