My Family : Being A Part Of A Family

Ohana “Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” This quote from the famous Disney movie Lilo and Stitch presents the true meaning of what it is to be a part of a family. As the youngest of eight children, I know from experience how the family installs our core values and personality traits. My oldest sibling is sixteen years older than me and my closest sibling is around nineteen months older than me. Being a part of a big family can be challenging, but it is also extremely rewarding. I learned a variety of life skills that most people my age are not exposed to until much later in life. With a sixteen-year age gap between me and my oldest sibling, I learned how to share when I was very young. My mom was constantly busy with our lives; we had to limit what we wanted to do and places that we wanted to go. I learned that the gift of my mother’s time was something I had to share with my other brothers and sister. Along with sharing my mother’s attention, I had to share many other things with my seven siblings. I had to share clothes with my older sister--even though she is five years older than me, we have been the same size, or very close to the same size, for most of my life. I was constantly given hand-me-downs growing up. Using the hand-me-downs was easier and much less expensive than buying a whole new wardrobe when I changed size or when I started school.
