Everyone has a heritage, where they came from, where they developed into who they are today. Your family stems from your heritage and definitely forms you into the person you become. Barbara Kingsolver goes into depth on the concept of family in her essay, “Stone Soup,”. Throughout this essay, Kingsolver specifies how despite some families have gone through broken places and had to overcomes struggles and had to restructure their life, they are still a family, regardless they are not the common “traditional family” that everyone expects to see. Kingsolver describes how each family is positioned into these “family of dolls” with specific roles for each member and then goes on to explain how the “traditional families” in society put these negative labels and break down “nontraditional families” simply because they are not the same.

A healthy family, is a family that follows a set of strong morals, stays loyal to one another, cooperates, and works together to avoid household differences. An environment where there is openness amongst family members is ideal because minds that are open are more liable to preventing any anger that their adolescents might express. If these challenges get the best of a family, it has the potential to increase hostility and create remoteness between the adolescents. If a family resolves their disagreements, it can strengthen, enforce the family relationships and have a positive effect on the adolescents. Over the past centuries in the United States, the perfect American family was a father who worked and took care of the finances, a mother who stayed at home taking care of the household responsibilities, children, and making sure they went to school. This was the great family structure in the United States. Every family from low, middle, and rich class retained this family lifestyle structure. Any deviation from this family structure was normally looked down upon and detested. However, times and social standards have changed dramatically since then. My family of origin has given me a lot of strengths. They taught me to be a strong individual who does not crumble when faced with obstacles. My parents faced a lot of obstacles and struggled to feed seven children, but no matter how bad it got, they never showed us how much they worried and stayed strong. Also, they taught me to care for and help others as much as I could because someday I could be the one who needs help. By observing my mom, I have learned not to buy things that I do not need and that materialistic things come later in life when you are financially stable. Hard work and dedication to one’s job is something that my parents have emphasized on many occasions. However, I have also discovered many weaknesses of my origin family. Three of the weaknesses that I will be discussing are communication, body image and education issues.

I grew up in a household slightly different from the average household. This abnormal household showed me that no matter the family unit someone can have a positive influence in their life that will push them to achieve their goals. We lived in Maryland so the cost of living was high my parents had to work multiple jobs. This means my brother and I really had little to none parental or supervision growing up. I am only four years younger than my brother so I would hang with his crowd of friends rather than mine. In my household, my mother’s niece, Monet lived with us she is about ten years older than my brother. When my brother and I would wake up and I would be the only person in the house. I can remember waking up and smelling the freshly cooked waffles and bacon downstairs. Monet was my mother’s brother, daughter. Monet became so close to my brother Avery and I she was almost as if she was our sister. I can remember growing up and she would always say, “You don't have to take the route I took, its many more exits on the highway.” Even though I was young I was not blind to the fact of Monet role in the community and her neighborhood job I never judged her, she did what she had to do to make ends meet. It was an experience every day, or anytime being with Monet. She was so popular around Maryland it was almost like everywhere we went we received respect love.
