Because my parents’ families are so different, there are few strengths common to all three family sculptures. One strength that applies in most cases is that children near each other in age tend to have close relationships. My family of origin was broken down into pairs: Steven and Daniel, Julia and Michael, Alyssa and Natalie, and Matthew and Emily. All of these paired relationships were generally healthy, and it was within these pairs that we were assigned roles within the family. Happily, in all cases, both the mother and the father took a part in raising their babies. A notable strength shared by my family and my mom’s family is that the oldest daughter in each family took responsibility for the youngest children, and consequently developed a stronger relationship with the baby of the family than the other children, even those closer to the baby’s age. I loved caring for young children, and I was responsible enough to babysit fairly early on. I usually took on this responsibility happily, or at least more so than my older brothers, and so I spent a lot of time changing diapers, reading picture books, and feeding my baby siblings when my mom was busy. Thus, a developed sort of a motherly relationship with the baby- in this case, Emily- whereas the siblings closer in sequence to her stayed away until she was older. This happened to an even greater degree in my mom’s family. Her parents trusted the oldest, Teresa, very highly, sometimes on a larger scale than was reasonable for her age. She babysat frequently and became a second mother figure to her siblings, and because of this, she and the youngest in the family, Jessica, developed an especially close relationship. Cynthia played her own maternal role. As the oldest child in her biological family, she became head of the family when their parents died. When they were adopted into the Dosdall family, Cynthia was 16 years old, and she already had a special parental relationship with
