My favorite classes this year were Mrs. Menzel’s two english classes. I have learned so much about myself as a reader, student, and an intellectual. Through both of her classes, we were given endless amounts of opportunity. What I mean by this is, we got to choose our own topics to study, books to read, and subjects to write about. We were truly treated like adults, which in my eyes, helped prepare us for the “real world”. Her willingness to let us grow as individuals was very inspiring, because she believed that we could do it on our own, with a little push whenever we needed it. I have gotten the chance to discover that I actually enjoy reading! Specifically, I discovered that Jodi Picoult might be my favorite author as of now. Also, I realized that writing is one of my favorite things to do, it is a passion of mine and I hope I can continue it somehow with the career that I choose.
Personally, her two classes have helped me grow as a speaker, writer, and reader. In her CCC class, I was able to write a profile on my dad, which really strengthened my relationship with him. After printing him a copy, and seeing tears in his eyes made me very grateful for this experience to share with him how much of a role model he is to me. In her English Lit class, I was able to ask my grandma and mom what books they would recommend for me. Having these conversations with them made their hearts warm, since I was showing interest in books for once (they are both book lovers). Her class pushed me to be the best that I can, and it wasn’t for the grade that I got. It was for learning about myself, and what I was capable of. That’s when I learned that her classes are actually changing me as a student. For an example, when I was working on a project, I wasn’t basing every single sentence on what the rubric told me to do. I was branching out and working on it because I truly wanted to learn more about the topic and put my all into it.
Thankfully, I have matured a great amount as a student because of Mrs. Menzel and her life lessons through teaching, and by just being herself. I truly feel ready for college now because of Mrs. Menzel, and I am grateful for that. This year, I changed my intended major from Business to Education,
When I arrived here at college I was extremely disappointed with the selection of food here in the cafeteria. I frequently found myself eating only hamburgers and pizza over and over again, simply because I did not like the other choices. About four months into the school year I had do go to the doctor for a virus and when the nurse weighed me I was a little surprised by what I saw. I had gained a little over ten pounds, close enough to what some refer to as the “Freshman 15.” It is a common fear among college students that they are going to gain fifteen pounds during the course of adjusting to college life. However experts have stated that the idea of the so called “Freshman 15,” is not that accurate. Every college student is obviously
Of the many classes that I chose to take, my two favorites were an English course and Health course. I may want to be a K-9 Officer, and these have few things in common with that career goal, but they were my favorite courses because of the professors who taught the course. Janice (Meredith) Privott for the English course, and Matthew Harpold for the Health course. These two teachers helped push me to better myself in almost every way. Mrs.Privott helped me on a personal level with stress and trauma; from her support she made me a much stronger person. Mr.Harpold helped me with my self-esteem, he took the time to help me when I needed it, even when I wasn’t in his class, just as Mrs.Privott did.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
Wiest took the time to listen to my troubles and work with me outside of class. She even invited me to come drink tea in her office if I needed a break or was not feeling well. But more importantly, she helped me put everything into perspective and I made some tough decisions. I cut down on my work hours, took a few months off from orchestra, took less volunteer opportunities, and learned to prioritize my responsibilities. Mrs. Wiest also helped me with my work when I was falling behind and let me take her finals at different times to balance my work load. I panicked when everything got difficult, but she supported me. If any teacher has made an impact on me during my academic career, it was certainly Mrs. Wiest. She goes above and beyond for her students and wants everyone to succeed. With her help, I was able to succeed during a very rough
I learned a lot in this class during the semester. The first project was our learning narrative, it was not what I was expecting from a writing class. I expected we would be writing a many formal essays in MLA format with lots of sources and research. The first essay being a creative writing project was unexpected. At first writing a narrative from my personal experience was difficult for me. I had not written anything besides formal essays since high school. Writing something that was creative and expressive was an adjustment. After a few days of writing I began to really enjoy my learning narrative. I liked being able to express myself and my own experiences and share them with others.
I learned things from this class that I would have never learned in a classroom as a student. As a Teacher Cadet, I loved all the adults I worked with at my elementary school and had the uttermost respect for them. However, just as in the real world, not everything was always smooth sailing. There were times I got frustrated and I felt I was doing everything wrong but I had to learn to power through it because I made a commitment to not only the class academically for myself but also to all 19 of my students. A high school teacher that has impacted my life is my 9th grade Geometry teacher, Mrs. Scully. Mrs. Scully has impacted my life from the very beginning. She has always been very caring and fun to be around. She is probably one of the most unique people in my life. She has always wanted me to do my best, and worked hard for me to understand the course. I was very troubled in mathematics, but the first time I received an 80 on a test in her class was the happiest moment for me. She is dedicated and she cares about you. She wants you to do good. I only had her for that year, but I still continue to see her. Sophomore and Junior year I would also use my tutoring time to be with her. I am now a senior class officer and she is our leader. She puts together senior activities and the officers help her. She influences me to be the very best person I can be. I see how she has these stylish cars and is overall happy with her life and committed to what she does. It’s inspiring and I can only wish to become as happy and successful as she is. It provided me an opportunity to introduce myself and identify my communications strength and weakness so that I could focus on improving my abilities throughout the semester. The Speaker Analysis was another fun assignment. I met my World Regions Professor, John Boyer, in person for the first time. This assignment allowed me to use all techniques that I learned from taking critical notes, listening, and analyzing speaker’s content, to observing the speaker’s presentation style, logics, and movement. The Common Book Essay was my most inspiring assignment. I read Eric Greitens book, The Heart and the Fist, multiple times because it was important for me to visualize his service and compassion not only his countrymen, but less privileges people all over the world. Subsequently, I felt proud and blessed of sitting along with my classmates and professor at the War Memorial Chapel to observe the pylons and discussed with one another what our ideals are and which pylon we most identify with. The Great The Corruptness of the American Dream The nineteen twenties was a decade of renaissance characterized by the American Dream- the widespread aspiration of Americans to live better than their parents. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, contains themes that continue to be relevant today. In his novel, Fitzgerald reprehends the American dream by describing its characteristics: the pseudo-relationship between money and happiness, the superficiality of the rich, and the class strife between the rich and the poor. “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” (Mailer 97).
I learned so much about myself and became more confident in who I am. I learned that I am not good at accounting or finance and that you will probably never see me walking down Wall Street. This semester I learned that I have a new passion for health and wellness. I love learning about nutrition and how to fuel your body properly. My business classes taught me how to get out of my comfort zone and be able to present in front of a large number of people. This time last year I was in an AP World History class that changed my life. The class was taught be Mr Joy, an oddball with a shiny dome and tattoos that i immediately recognized as a kindred spirit. He had a way of keeping us on our toes and engaged every day, and not just because we had no way of knowing when he was going to emit a piercing scream, start talking in a british accent, or announce a graded discussion-but because he knew how to get through to us. He inspired and challenged me and my classmates despite the enormous amount of information we needed to learn.We cared enough to do our best because what he was teaching us mattered. The history we were learning about directly affected the present we were living in, and slowly, we began to see the world differently.
In my time at North, I have had countless amazing classroom experiences. The classes that I’ll never forget though will be AP Calculus with Mrs. Buckley, AP Statistics with Mrs. Schmid, and multiple advanced science classes with Mrs. McCreery. From the funny moments and inside jokes shared with classmates to the feeling of satisfaction after finally understanding a super tough topic, I will always have terrific memories of these classes. These classes taught me to challenge myself and to always stay curious. My experiences also showed me that hard classes are as enjoyable as they are difficult. My daughter has mentioned that they have learned about other countries, cultures, world problems and much more. It brings a smile to my face to hear my daughter talk about conversations she has over topics like the cyclist race that occurred earlier this year or about articles she’s read about different festivals in South America. Some of the things my daughter highlight about her year so far from the class are that they have had a dance class to learn about Hispanic culture, they have done a tiny bit of poetry for valentine’s day, songs and books in Spanish, guest speakers and lots of fun projects that all fall under the curriculum. She brings something that most teachers forget and that is interaction with the students. By connecting with her students she not only brings out what Godwin strives for a positive atmosphere but she also shows the students that she is there for them. She gives them support and confidence in what they do and that is something valuable that they will carry on forever! Although these students have much to learn, especially for the AP exam coming up, I believe with further guidance from Mrs. Andueza they will all receive exceptional
It gave me an outstanding education for my high school future. In Kindergarten, Mrs. Cordia taught me sight words, math, and Jesus. In Mrs. Cordia class she had Mrs. Cordia Corner, estimation jar, bad name book, and stuff animals that we could take home. I remember when I got the prettiest pink angel statue for her corner that i still have. She used to throw cheeto balls and candy at us while we were watching a movie;everyone would fight over them. She introduce me to celery and peanut butter together I love that snack! Everyone fought over who gets to sit next to her in church or the classroom. As I graduated and moved on to first grade I could hear Mrs. Cordia saying, “Good bye my little souls!”. In first grade, Mrs. Broshears taught me me how to use money with Broshear bucks. With those bucks you can get something from her treasure chest or if you reach a certain amount you can eat lunch with and a friend. I remember when I brought Ben Watkins and we got Mcdonalds and sat and watched sesame street in our classroom. We thought we were living the life. In second grade, my teacher was Mrs. Smith. We learned the start of multiplication, crusave, I started to read chapter books, and we received the sacraments of Reconciliation and first holy communion. Mrs. Smith was so fun, she loved Frank Sinatra so sometimes she would turn it on and the whole classroom would dance together to it. She introduced me to my favorite book, Because of Winn Dixie. If we were bad we would have to put our name on the board. One time she put me and Ben Watkins next to each other and we would talk so much so we had to put our name on board. We both started to cry and the next day me and Ben came back and apologize to Mrs. Smith and she erased our names. Out of nowhere one time she jumped on the table and started to dance and kicked all our books on the ground. She was so funny! In third grade Mrs. Resiak
I feel like I've learned a lot of thing from this class that I probably would have never thought about before. Firstly, I learned how community colleges work and about some of the policies they go by. I also learned about a lot of different career options that I never explored before. I think this really helped to open my eyes to all the options so I'm not limiting myself. Lastly, and most importantly, I learned about ways of managing stress and my time. This is something I have always struggled with and now I feel like I have the tools to change. I think this will really improve many things in all areas in my life but especially school. It was really great to hear everyone's dreams and goals as well as their stresses. It just shows that
