My Favorite Time of Year Essay

Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year, for me, and the many stage and film versions of Dickens’ masterpiece offer many opportunities to experience the joy and revelation of A Christmas Carol. Pick from Alastair Sims version, Patrick Stewart, Bill Murray’s Scrooged, The Muppets and the 3-D masterpiece with Jim Carrey, just to name a few. It’s safe to say it is a very popular show done an infinite number of different ways. That is why as a director I would create a contemporary staging of A Christmas Carol in New York City. Now, at first glance this may seem unoriginal, but for me it is a perfect setting to honor the story in its original form.

There are several Symbols associated with Christmas, Santa Claus, Snow or cold weather, Wreaths, garland , wrapping paper and a Christmas tree. Society does not look at Halloween costumes or a hot sunny day and think of Christmas, although when I noticed that some retailers have Halloween, thanksgiving and Christmas décor out, it does not seem to mesh well. But retailers are showing society these symbols getting them thinking about what’s coming soon.

The possibility of year round schools has been a hot debate topic for quite some time. The question is, is the idea of year round schools acceptable considering all the potential drawbacks? Year round schooling can be disruptive to both the family of the students and the teachers themselves, it can be too costly for a large group of people, and year round schools do not provide the same opportunity for learning as the traditional school year does. For several reasons, the traditional school year, which runs for ten months instead of eleven, is more beneficial in comparison to year round schooling.

“Bah Humbug!” Immediately, Scrooge and A Christmas Carol come to mind. A Christmas Carol, originally written in 1843 by Charles Dickens, takes place in Victorian London where a greedy, negative Scrooge learns that compassion and giving are more important in life. Over the years, numerous adaptations of this classic story have been developed. One of these versions is the dramatized version by Frederick Gaines. Another version is the 1984 television-movie directed by Roger O. Hirson. These two versions of A Christmas Carol share similarities, however many differences appear while delivering the theme of family and the importance of giving.

Gallahan’s article grants the reader with an article containing the advantages and disadvantages of a year round school. In the beginning of the article Gallahan discusses that year round school is always a debate the moment it is brought up. While the author mentions that the article is about the two different sides of year round school, it is mainly focused on the advantages. For example, “Schools utilizing a year-round calendar are experiencing benefits of remediation and retention as other traditional calendar schools are reaping the benefits of calendar unity and less funding commitment” (Gallahan). This intext citation displays that even though her article addresses the debate, her voice of reason is directed more towards the advantages.

Waking up early on Christmas was always a thing my brothers and I did when we were younger. What made those moments so special was all the decorating we did in the week before. Decorating the Christmas tree was always one of my favorites. Seeing the same ornaments year after year never got old for me. I remember stringing out the tangled lights we used for the outside of the house all throughout the yard. I would hand my brothers a string of lights as he stood on the ladder supported by the house. I always enjoyed putting up the little snowman and gingerbread houses throughout my living room. Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year. I love seeing the shinny Christmas lights that decorates my street and the sound of fresh fallen snow on the ground. Christmas reminds me of family, the laughter and loved we shared, and the gifts we gave to each other. My house on Christmas became the center of my joy.

I think Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. Maybe because of the special atmosphere that you can feel everywhere, in shops, restaurants , pubs and even streets, where you can hear the magical carols, or maybe it's because of its religious background, but what I can tell you for sure is that I can't think of anything more exciting than the image of the entire family preparing the Christmas Tree or fixing the Christmas dishes.

My favorite season of the year is summer because of the warm weather, the school vacation, and the endless fun. I really enjoy the warm weather because it’s the perfect atmosphere to do outdoor activities. My favorite part about summer has to be the fact that school is closed for two months. During summer, you’re free to do whatever you want, not worrying about curfew or waking up early for school. Summer time is a great time to relax with friends and family by soaking up the sun at a beach or simply having dinner together.

The New Year is upon us once again, ready or not. This holiday seems to me the one that provokes the most thought and reflection, which is a good thing really. We all need to assess where we are in our journey of life and make adjustments. For the Christian, this is especially important. Ephesians 5:1-2 reminds us to "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." The past year has been a great learning year for me in the area of relationships. I 've learned a lot about myself, others, and especially about how much God loves ME! Some of what I learned was very disappointing as I saw so much selfishness in relationships. I know that I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I just recognized it more, and saw the repercussions many times. Those consequences are painful and the effects are trickle-down. It has made me really think about Love a lot more and how Love as God intended it to be should be evident in our lives ALWAYS, and not just when it 's convenient for us.
