It was our first Christmas in our little cabin and the mountain air reeked with the holiday spirit. My husband's family would arrive Christmas Eve morning and leave the day after Christmas which meant we had a lot to do.
Since this was our first Christmas with his family, we wanted everything perfect. Although money was tight, I made the most out of every cent.
I sewed a festive tablecloth from a Christmas remnant I'd found on clearance. I fashioned miniature stockings for everyone and found tiny treasures to stuff them with. We shopped the local grocery sales and loaded the refrigerator and freezer in advance. I made candy, cookies, and loaves of sweet bread so that we had plenty of goodies to celebrate with and enough to send home with each family. Everyone would have a home-made present to open. Even my brother-in-law's dog would have a package.
Now, all we needed was a tree.
We headed down the mountain to Woodstock, Virginia and visited several tree lots, but without success. Up ahead, my husband spotted a nursery and suggested that we see what they had to offer. Of course, the nursery boasted a beautiful choice of trees, but they cost considerably more than what we'd seen at the other lots, although deservedly so.
Winding through paths of cut conifers, my husband suddenly gasped. "Look!" he squealed. "They've got live trees!"
Married to a tree nut, I knew this meant trouble. Unfortunately, the "live" trees wore price tags
I can remember the Christmas morning of 2009. I ran downstairs to see what Santa had left me under the tree. When I saw the pink Barbie convertible car I started jumping up and down. I wanted to take it outside immediately and ride it. It was one of my favorite and most loved toys that I ever had. I would drive around in my Barbie car everyday around my neighborhood. My cousins and friends would come on play dates and drive my convertible around the neighborhood. My best Christmas gift was when I received my dog Chloe. I met Santa Claus in The Falls for the first
We ended up having a wonderful Christmas. We had a lot of fun even though most of us were sick. My sister ended up catching the flu a day after Christmas, making it that only two people in my family had not gotten sick. While we would not like to relive it again, my family and look back on Christmas 2014 and laugh. We all have come to know it as “The Christmas when Catherine gave everybody the
As corpses permeate the graveyard, the ability sustain life itself comes into question; Olds warps the significance of the tree to argue that life is no longer sustainable. Due to the lack of enough wood for coffins, the disposal of corpses exemplify desperation and require inhumane treatment. The sheer number of corpses necessitates that many are “Bound with rope like the tree's ball of roots / When it waits to be planted”(7-8). Literally converting poisonous carbon dioxide into oxygen, a tree preserves life on earth. Ironically, as the
To Ernest’s horror, the tree
Waking up early on Christmas was always a thing my brothers and I did when we were younger. What made those moments so special was all the decorating we did in the week before. Decorating the Christmas tree was always one of my favorites. Seeing the same ornaments year after year never got old for me. I remember stringing out the tangled lights we used for the outside of the house all throughout the yard. I would hand my brothers a string of lights as he stood on the ladder supported by the house. I always enjoyed putting up the little snowman and gingerbread houses throughout my living room. As you get older all the decorating and family time seems to decline, so spending time with family on holidays were always
His young wife was pregnant, and one night she dreamed that the tree was uprooted. Her husband said, "My wife, your dream makes me feel very sad. It is obviously a dream with great strength. According to our tradition, we have to make every effort to make it realize. The tree must be uprooted.”
This year Thanksgiving was an awesome experience as this year my family hosted the Thanksgiving Dinner for the first time after we moved into our own place. I helped my mother to cook the turkey and make other arrangements for
In his early childhood, a boy spends his time playing with his favorite tree, climbing its trunk, and swinging from its branches. As the boy approaches adolescence, he desires money and the tree yields its apples for him to sell. At adulthood, he yearns for a home and the tree offers its branches for the man to build his home. At middle age, he asks the tree for a boat and the tree offers its trunk, which the man cuts to build his boat. During his final years, the old man asks the tree for a quiet place to sit and rest, and the tree offers its stump.
Christopher Ingraham stated, “Topping the overall list is Ashe County, North Carolina, which produces just shy of 2 million trees per year … But the latest numbers show that Ashe County is now, in fact, the largest producer of trees anywhere in the U.S.” (1). Tourism greatly increased the supply and demand of Fraser fir Christmas trees in Ashe County. Many tourists across the east coast come to visit the top producers “choose and cut” farms, where they can select any tree for a reasonable price and be assured it is the freshest quality tree for their money. Tourists are assets to provide funding for maintaining several Christmas tree farms for next year’s season. Ashe County has become a settlement for new
Christmas arrived during my first week home after my discharge from the army. I had been stateside six months, and when I woke up, I felt like I lost my marbles. I mean I wondered if I was an addict, an alcoholic, or insane.
Getting a tree means going in search of a large tree with lots of foliage. Small and thin-branched trees are unwanted. Once the family picks their plump tree, they undertake a challenging task of bringing the huge, heavy tree back to their home. They have to pick it up and tie it to the top of their car, and to top it off they have to drive very slow so the tree doesn’t fall off. Once they arrive home they have to bring it down from the car and take it inside. It doesn’t fit easily through the entrance of the house; so many people have to help push the tree through the doorway. Once the tree is finally inside, for some weird reason the tree always needs to be put in the center of the living room, and it doesn’t stop there. Once the tree is placed in the center, then family members decorate it with flashy and colorful gems on strings. They also add wires around the tree, and after plugging it to the wall; it makes the tree look very luminous. After decorating the tree with gems on strings and bright wires, there needs to be a final touch. A star, or an angel is put on the tip of the tree. Maybe it brings some sort of wisdom or good vibes, which compliments the tree. As time passes, people put decorated boxes around the tree in the days leading up to
Decorating was a family affair, each ornament hung with care. Wreaths, bells, and tinsel filled the shelves while toys were being built by Santa’s elves. Holiday sales at every store dolls, toys, and games galore! People strolled through the walk of lights while extended family planned their flights. Hot cocoa sipping and warm coats, sniffly noses and sore throats.
After a couple hours of unwrapping gifts, the rest of the night was singing, eating, laughter,
I remember waking up on Christmas day with a huge smile on my face, heart full of joy, and my stomach barking. I can smell all the spices cooking down stairs. As soon as I got out of bed I will rushed down the steps into the kitchen to see what my mom had prepare for us on this special day. We had different variety of food turkey, stuffing, ham, bake beans, mac and
We each take a huge breath as we step out into the crispy snow that snaps under our boots. I make my way to the front door, illuminated by the red, green, and blue Christmas lights. As I open the door and step into a house full of cheek pinches and hugs, an array of Christmas smells welcomes me and makes my mouth water. As my family and I are quickly made comfortable, I look around... All the house is full of Christmas decorations, and the carols are heard all over the house. My cousins are running, playing , and laughing.
