Attending this class, English 1303, was not in my plan to be successful in college. At first I thought it was a core class that everyone had to take, and I was quickly proven wrong after the first day of reading the requirements. I figured that I already spent the money on a textbook for the class and it will beneficial for me to refresh on somethings, but I really do not need to be in the class. I continued to tell myself that it was a simple misplacement. I expected this class to be a breeze that would just test skills that I already learned in high school and although it did do that I found I was being refreshed on things that I did not completely understand. As I near the end of the semester I realize that I wasted quite a bit of money on a book I’ve never used but should use in the future and that I did in fact need this class. This class was not only my first taste of the real world of college but also a rude awakening. When thinking back over all the things that I have learned over the course of the semester I feel like I can grasp previously learned topics more and I was even able to add on top of my knowledge skills that I probably should have known before college. Learning about paraphrasing and citing sources in my essays were a few of the topics that I had learn back in high school, but had not completely understood till after I took this course. My punctuation skills definitely have had some improvement over the past few weeks since we went over tool 14.
In just this semester alone, I have improved my overall grammar, writing skill and word choice more than I did last
The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement.
I feel that I have improved my writing abilities during the course of this class. I am looking forward to applying the new found skills to future classes. One valuable tip I learned was to always read a paper out loud before turning it in. This has helped me to catch many errors. I had never thought of doing this prior to this class. It is an excellent tip because when you’re reading to yourself in your head you often miss errors. Once you read them out loud you can hear how things sound and will notice if something does not sound right. Putting the assignment away and coming back to it was also a great tip. I have found when I come back to an assignment I will notice a wrong word or punctuation that I hadn’t seen before. It also gives you a chance to really think on the topic and come up with more detail.
My expectations of my talents as a writer have increased tremendously after taking this class. When I read through my paper, or someone else's paper, it's not just words on a screen for me anymore. I can actually find grammatical errors, sentence fragments, and comma errors. This is a skill that I never possessed before taking this class. Even with how much I have grown as a writer from the beginning of the year, there is still room for improvement. On all my papers I had at least five small grammatical errors that would cost me
At the beginning of the semester I thought this class was going to be pointless because I took it in high school, however, I did pick up some tricks that have helped me in the revising process. For example, when we printed out our essays and cut them to rearrange the paragraphs really helped me with getting my essay more organized and becoming one complete thought.
I have improved as a writer greatly since the beginning of the year. Many great accomplishments have happened from just writing all the time and taking a greater look on how to improve writing. Since the First-Week essay and the Midterm Reflection, I have gained many skills that I can take with to college in the future. Also, I learned how to write conclusions, in text citations, bibliography and connecting the thought into another topic in the same paragraph better. Some of the skills I have gained through this course is the discipline to continue making progress on the essay, organization and not putting the project off until last minute.
During my time as a student, I have taken part in a broad spectrum of English classes. Some of these classes have been a delightful experience, and others have been subpar. The most recent class that I was in was one that I would categorize as the second of the two. The last English class that I was in was enrolled in was English II. The class itself was not entirely misfortunate, and had identifiable high points; however, it just was not a class that I would describe as fulfilling. In this class, I experienced one of the worst moments of my life, discovered a weakness that was holding me back, and also experienced one of the best days of my high school career.
One of the most interesting things that I have learned in this class would be how to write in text citations properly. Considering I had never used APA style writing before I came to Bethel, I think that I have gotten better at them. I also feel like my sentence structure has gotten better since the beginning of this class.
There I was, a sophomore in high school nervously selecting my classes for the next year. I realized I would not want to be taking an AP english class along with 2 math classes. Now I find I’m in a pinch to find something. I see my friends choosing gym classes or other blow offs, however I wanted to challenge myself. I look through the list feverishly and see a class that stood out, sociology. I had always done well in social studies classes so I figured it would be a good choice. Over the next five months or so I put almost no thought into what the class may bring or even the fact it may end up on my schedule. I had come to realize that I would be in the class at the beginning of the year upon getitng my schedule.
I have improved myself in several ways over the course of 16 weeks or so. One of the ways in which this class has helped me improve my grammatical construction and writing skills ability in English language. I have learned how to properly construct a
The biggest thing I learned this semester is where to appropriately place commas and how parallel structure is really important. I never really noticed how much simple commas could change a whole story. Parallel structure is probably going to help me out a lot later in life especially in college because it just sounds better. It sounds more professional when you write things and the flow goes along with it. I learned that having people read over your work is probably the best thing you can do for yourself. It helps a lot when other people can help you see the mistakes you may have missed a thousand times before.
One of the courses that I decided to take was "1061 Introduction to Chemistry" (the one that most science majors start out in), despite hearing frightening stories from past students about its competitiveness. But by the third week, I was already regretting my decision. I found myself juggling between watching endless hours of online Chemistry videos and reading the textbook multiple times. To go along, I had to write two 13-page single-spaced lab reports for my Chemistry lab that for me took a considerable amount of time for a one credit class. By mid-semester, when I checked my first midterm exam score online, it became clear that I was struggling. At first, I was in denial. I reloaded the page five
I have learned so much in this class. When we started with English in Unit one and going over misspelled and misused words I felt like I was in school all over again but it was an eye opener. It was very helpful that I got the chance to refresh on Capitalization, verbs, nouns and how to write a proper essay. Reviewing APA writing and in text citations and the proper way to use them in an essay was helpful to me. Sometimes I was a little nervous reading the feedback but it was for my good. I appreciate all the resources and assignments given in this class so that I can learn and be a better writer.
Of the many transitions we must make in life, the transition from High school to something beyond is one of the greatest. For me the next step was going away to college. High school was said to have prepared me for college, but how could I be sure? One of the biggest and most shocking changes for me was leaving high school and being on my own. I was unsure of what college entailed, and i most definitely didn't know what to expect from my classes. This class was just the opportunity I needed. It cut down the worrying of what the school work will be and It has opened my eyes to what I should expect next year and the things that will be asked of me. It was a shock and a shift from what I knew. I have been really enjoying this class and I believe
In addition to improving my reading and writing, I have become a much better student in general. I have changed as a student by being able to add details to support the main idea, and to use sophisticated words. The adjustments I have made are that I have studied often, I work on homework ahead of time, I work in groups, I use CONNECT, and I also use the app Elevate to help with my reading and writing. I now know how to set up essays, how to use context clues, new vocabulary words, and how to use vocabulary words in sentences.
