My Hero's Journey

Though few literary templates have been able to stand the test of time, the Hero’s Journey, or “monomyth”, has the distinction of being present in the literature and mythology of almost every single culture that has possessed written language. The term “monomyth” was coined by Joseph Campbell, an American mythological research, in his book entitled The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Since his groundbreaking analysis and compilation, thousands of writers, directors, and producers have applied the basic elements of the monomyth to their own media. Everyone has their own adventure(s) in life and so everyone obviously has their own definition of what a Hero's Journey is. All journeys, however, include a majority of the same stages; from slaying dragons, both literally and figuratively, following one's bliss and going into the belly of the beast. Marlo is just trying to test the security guard at the convenience store, when he goes in to buy a bottle of water, aware that there is a security officer in the store watching him like a hawk. Marlo does not care, he knows that he has more power than the officer. To test his power, he pays for his water as he stares at the security officer. Marlo takes a few suckers and places them into his pocket without buying them. He then walks out without blinking an eye, knowing that there will be confrontation. Marlo does this because he knows his power and place in the city, and is not afraid of anyone, nevertheless a cop.

Huckleberry Finn is on a quest to see who he really is and while doing so he completely ignores society's beliefs. This quest is often referred to as the Hero’s journey, in this quest the hero will run into many conflicts and when he/she is finished they will be humbled. The quest in divided into 10 parts but the 3 main ones are the call, transformation and the return of the hero. Within each stage there are steps the hero will go through and change from who he is to who he needs to become.

This concept is shown to be true by John Lee Hancock, through his film, The Blind Side. The journey may offer life-changing experiences, but it is ultimately the destination that motivates the traveller to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, making both equally important. Journeys can be driven by aims of escaping to a better place, but the process itself is just as significant as it shapes the outlook of the traveller.
