In the words of Marcus Garvey, ‘a people without the knowledge of their past, origin and culture is like a tree without roots’, I relate deeply to this. I have always been curious about exploring my family history after recently finding out about my great uncles struggle in the Second World War, where at the age of 16 he was sent to Auschwitz. Under such horrific repression, he survived the Buno/Monowitz concentration camp, the subsequent death march and the Bunchenwald concentration camp. The resilience of the human race has consistently had a profound effect on me and it brought about my interest in the Civil Rights Movement in America. Works such as Michael J.
