My definition of leadership is, “Leadership is the art of providing challenges, opportunities and direction to others in an effort to motivate them towards providing sustainable solutions or completing pre-determined objectives or tasks. My positive Leadership influences during my Coast Guard career include a Damage Control Chief, who provided countless challenging opportunities, a Boatswain Mate Chief who went out his way to recognize exceptional work as well as requiring the correction of sub par work, a Telephone Technician Chief and two Electronics Warrant Officers for providing limited direction, and all previously mentioned members for allowing me to practice leadership as I have defined it above.

I expect every member to operate in alignment of our core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to duty. A high level of mutual trust and respect is an instrumental requirement to have a good leadership experience. In addition, I pride myself in saying and demonstrating that I have done everything I am asking of my shipmates as well. If a problem can’t be solved I am the type of person to ask questions enabling my team to half step and recognize the problem, putting them on the right path to success or provide on the spot training if needed. It is fundamental to lead by example, for instance completing physical fitness activities, volunteering for outreach opportunities, and the same types of extra command sponsored committees you are asking your shipmates to volunteer for. As long as the trust factor is 100% I am a firm believer of stating objectives and boundaries, then empowering people to do the right thing, while occasionally verifying folks are on the right track. As part of my role as a senior leader I also make a point to work harder than ever to provide opportunities to further diversify my crew's knowledge and skills through new personal and professional training, or special projects, while also doing everything I can to support them while they feverishly lay it all on the line to support
Leadership is often defined as the act of leading a group of people or an organization. In its simplest terms I completely agree with that statement, but how that group of people is lead is an integral part of the definition. Leadership development has become a focus of the Coast Guard for good reason. Providing its members with tools to lead, mentor, and inspire among other qualities in order to care for their shipmates with a goal of maintaining mission readiness is how I would explain leadership within the Coast Guard.
1. My personal definition of leadership is: Set a personal example in your behavior that reflects the Coast Guard core values and what you expect from others, on and off duty. Know the direction you are going and effectively communicate expectations so that others clearly understand what the goal is. Always seek to improve yourself both professionally and academically. Encourage others to identify areas for improvement and inconsistencies in policy and procedures. Foster an environment that builds trust and confidence by motivating others to want to succeed.
motivate, and encourage others to become the best they can be. On purpose, I lead by
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.
Leadership can be defined in many different facets. To me the definition of leadership is, “Displaying the ability to inspire and empower others through the example of one’s own self actions”. Too many times we hear, “Do what I say”, instead of, “Do what I do.” A successful leader’s actions speak louder than words ever will. My first day in the Coast Guard following boot camp graduation, I experienced firsthand on how a leader should not act nor conduct themselves. Though alcohol was the main contributing factor on what occurred that evening, looking back, it was more of the lack of maintaining our core values that ultimately resulted in that Chief losing the title as Chief of the boat and being forced to retire.. That moment
My Leadership philosophy is influenced by President Abraham Lincoln and his leadership style which resounds with me on how one should act and leader others. In fact, his willingness to get out of the office and circulate around the people is one of the foundations of his leadership style and is resonated by Master Chief Cantrell as he calls all chiefs to get out from behind our desks and get to know our people. This trait along with his character as it relates to honesty and integrity align directly with how I believe a leader should act. Leadership for me is not just telling people what needs to be done, but in order to be an effective leader we must get to know those we lead and above all we must be honest with everyone around us, both
The belief of leadership is constantly changing, with many theories and frameworks available. Today’s organizations face ever-increasing change, which includes increased patient demands and work needs, which requires a more adaptive flexible leadership that is becoming increasingly important in the 21st century. Leadership theory and philosophy can be divided into several well-known styles. Within this paper, we will discuss the basis of autocratic, democratic, laissez faire, servant, charismatic, transformational, and situational styles of leadership within the nursing profession, then conclude the writer’s personal philosophies of leadership.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Although I have stated my lengthy definition of leadership, there is one thing that really defines leadership. The definition of leadership is truly the actions of a leader that help you become closer and closer to achieving what you want in life. If leadership is not helping you achieve your goals, then you are probably following the wrong leader. You should always follow leadership that is going to help and not hurt you.
I define leadership as the ability to provide strength and coverage to support a Sailor, regardless of rank. The ability to instill Core Values, provide training and the tools a Sailor will need to excel in both their professional and personal life. A true leader will support a Sailor, any Sailor, during the high times of a career, but to be a solid force if there are any lows.
From research we see that there are many qualities that people value in leaders. Some of these qualities include: having high standards, supportive, inquisitive, involved, honest and having integrity. When I think about leadership I think of a person who is self-aware and always striving for improvement. To be a good leader you need to know how your personal biases may impact decision making in various situations. Bias or values can effect how you interact with those you come in contact with on a daily basis. A good leader can set the tone for students, staff, and parents by being consistent and clear in thoughts and in actions. The leader is the foundation of the building.
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and
In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges.
I feel that the most important leadership trait in your business life is forming good relationships. You must form a good relationship with people in order to become a leader. If you build on a broken relationship then you will not gain that person's trust and they will not want to follow you. If you build a good relationship with someone then trust, respect, credibility and many other traits will also be part of your leadership style.
A significant part of effective leadership is the close connection between the leader and the follower, which often determines the success of the leader’s mission. Unfortunately, this leader-follower relationship cannot be created according to some simple formula. Without inspiration, involvement, and encouragement from both participants, the relationship suffers. Leaders, in particular, must give an extra effort to reach out to followers in order to initiate and develop this alliance that is so critical to the achievement of goals. Young leaders of today face special challenges as they try to communicate and interact with their followers and potential followers. As a result of the changes that
