From the Ground to My Cup
I was struggling to find a research topic that affected my day to day life while also being plant related. In the beginning, I was unclear but the answer was in my face the entire time. First, I am a college student and far from a morning person. Second, I work at Dunkin ' Donuts. Lastly, I consume it 6 days a week. Coffee plays a huge role in my life. As I approached my research, I thought I would start with what I know: the coffee bean. Right away, I learned that coffea (scientific name) is a type of flowering plant. It is a part of the Rubiaceae family and can be spotted by its simple, opposite leaves and interpetiolar stipules. These plants are natives of Southern Africa and tropical Asia. What most of us know as "coffee beans" are coffee seeds and it is what we use to make coffee.
Even though a "coffee bean" could be easily recognized, it might be more difficult to spot a coffee tree. Coffee seeds work well when they are planted in large, shaded beds. After the seeds begin to sprout, they are replanted in individual plots. They are usually planted in the wet season because the plant needs the moisture. Coffee trees are covered with waxy, green leaves that produce white flowers. Those flowers will die after a few days and small cherries will begin to grow. They will turn continue to change colors as they grow. Depending on its variety and care, a coffee tree can produce fruit for a long time. “The tree of Coffea Arabica will grow fruits after
As the rising District Manager for the new Dunkin’ Donuts stores, many factors must be presented, analyzed, promoted, and executed. Opening new stores requires innovative ideas, being ahead of the game with the newest trends, and stabilizing the stores for the least amount of turnovers. Managing stores also means maintaining respect while coaching is vital. This requires feedback on both upward and downward channels of communication. For the purpose of this paper, Dunkin’ Donuts will be assessed and evaluated based on its job and organizational designs, criteria for recruiting and
The difficulty in implementing this program would be getting people to buy into the idea of hiring these skilled immigrant workers. American has this notion that we are the best at everything. People may feel that these skilled immigrant workers are not qualified to do such jobs. In order to combat this I would have people like Mr. Cash tell his story. I would have Mr. Cash explained that his skills in accountant and his knowledge of the stock market is what allowed him to afford the expenses associated with traveling to America. I would have him share his story of how he was taken advantage of and the struggle he faced to care for himself and his family
This science fair project was performed to find out the effect on plant growth of adding caffeine to the soil. The experiment was done by using mung bean plants and watering them daily with water, water mixed with caffeine and with a coffee mixture.
The genus coffea produces berries that are used to obtain coffee. The commercially exploited species are coffea Arabica and coffea robusta. Coffea Arabica is the most used species that is used to extract coffee. This type is found in the highlands of Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya and produces high quality coffee.

Everybody remembers his or her first job most likely not every detail, but definitely the experiences one learned. My first job had its ups and downs similar to a roller coaster. Being a Dunkin Donuts employee is a satisfying feeling because daily you’re surrounded by not only coffee but delicious donuts. My experience as a Dunkin Donuts employee taught me patience and the importance of being a hard worker.
Over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the world everyday (34). “As coffee grew in popularity, intrigue surrounded its cultivation. The Arabs, protective of their precious Coffea arabica, refused to allow fertile seeds, coffee trees, or cuttings to leave their country. Transportation of the plant out of the Moslem nations was forbidden by law” (54). During the 1600s coffee was not only being used as a beverage but it was also used as medicine, they were given to women to relive menstrual discomfort.
I have chosen Dunkin Donuts for my Ethnography of a Coffee House report. Opened in 1948 by William Rosenberg in Quincy, Massachusetts, Mr. Rosenberg named his restaurant “Open Kettle” which at that time served only donuts and coffee. Two years later in 1950, Mr. Rosenberg renamed his restaurant “Dunkin Donuts.” Mr. Rosenberg’s goal was “make and serve the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly and courteously in modern, well-merchandised stores,” a philosophy which still holds true today (News Dunkin Donuts).
Coffea commonly known as a coffee plant is the member of the Rubiaceae family (USDA 2015). While there are various species of the coffee plant, Coffee Arabica and Coffee Canephora are mostly grown. However, between them Coffee Arabica is considered to have greater quality and flavor. With the increase in demand of coffee within coffee drinkers globally, coffee has successfully ensured its place to become the world’s second largest commodity. Brazil is known as the top manufacturer of coffee followed by countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Colombia, and Ethiopia (USDA 2014). The rising demand for coffee has augmented the dependence of the coffee industry on countries that grows coffee. Using pesticides on coffee fields seemed to be an ultimate solution for farmers who were hoping for maximum productivity of coffee. Pesticides are used in agriculture in order to protect plants from fungal diseases, pests, insects that affect the growth of food crops. On the short run, using pesticides has an advantage as it increases the production and the quality of coffee. However, pesticide practices have negative issues on the environment, the quality and the amount of coffee manufactured, and the health of the coffee drinkers and the farmers in the long run.
When I think of the coffee bean I think back to the Radford football game. How we was down 23-8. The team and I used that to be the great fragrance the coffee bean to turn something bad into something good. How we were able to come back and make the game interesting, then to winning on the last play of the game. To hear the crowd erupt and my teammates going crazy saying “we did it.”
Farmers are looking into this crop because it is being grown in avocado groves. Many people are considering growing coffee in avocado groves. It has become a major dispute between many farmers. In the article, Stephanie talks about how many people will pay money for these coffee beans (Storm, Stephanie. “Your Coffee is from Where? California?” New York Times, May 26, 2017). However, climate is also playing a role in the making of coffee beans. The climate affects the growth of coffee. The climate is damaging the crop. If it is very hot outside, the crop does not grow. Coffee growth has decreased due to the heat. In the article, coffee drinkers are more likely to spend money on their coffee rather than to drink it black. The avocado trees are increasing the growth of coffee because it is providing the crop cover. It is protecting the crop from heat which can damage the growth. These avocado trees are very important because without these trees, coffee would not be
Dunkin’ Donuts has over six-thousand locations in the United States and serves over three and a half million customers daily. The biggest competitor for Dunkin’ Donuts are Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Starbucks, and McDonalds. In order to maintain market competitiveness Dunkin’ Donuts must remain driven towards service excellence. This starts by hiring staff members that are eager to provide the best customer service with every interaction they have and be able to produce an excellent product. “Dunkin’ Brand offers a comprehensive series of award-winning training programs for crew members, managers and franchises designed to foster deep connections to our brands’ heritage and improve the guest experience and business results at the restaurant level.” (Schmidt,R.A & Oldfield, B.M. 1999) Bill Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin’ Donuts operates by a simple philosophy but one that is carried through each store. “Make and serve the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly and courteously in modern well-merchandised stores” (Dunkin Donuts, n.d., pp. 1) Being a new district manager tasked with opening five new locations will help fulfill Rosenberg’s vision of providing the best product around in a courteous environment both for staff and customers. This paper will focus on job design, organizational design, recruiting and selecting, training personnel and performance appraisal are key elements in the success of opening five new locations.
Both beverages are purchased and consumed by many people at many times throughout the day. Coffee is consumed either hot or cold by roughly one third of the people in the entire world. Coffee is consumed in amounts larger than any other beverage. Part of coffee’s popularity can be due to its stimulatory effect produced by the active ingredient caffeine found in the coffee bean. Coffee comes from two major sources: the plant Coffea aribica and the plant Coffea canephora. The plant bears fruit similar to cherries and when the fruits are ripe they are picked from the plant. After harvesting the fruit, the cherries are dispersed all over the ground where the sun dries them. After drying in the sun for a day or two machines are used to remove the bean. The bean is then roasted and eventually packaged and shipped for wholesale. A regular cup of coffee can be produced in a few simple steps. First, dried coffee beans are ground up to a fine powder like substance. Then the coffee grounds are placed in a type of filter and hot water is poured through it. The hot water extracts the caffeine and other ingredients from the ground up beans. The liquid is collected form the filter and consumed. There are many variations to creating a cup of coffee, but the taste is usually the only factor effected. Coffee will always contain the same ingredients but the taste of the beverage depends on the preparation of the
Imaging if there was no more coffee in this world, how would you feel? Nowadays, coffee becomes an important part of people’s life. People who often work overtime, they drink coffee because caffeine can make you awake; people who have to wake up early in the morning, they drink coffee because instead of making breakfast, coffee is more convenient; people drink coffee during the free time, because it also tastes good.
