Throughout my childhood I dreamed of my future college adventures. I pictured myself receiving a full-ride to a major college because of my athletic ability and academic success. As the years progressed, I came to realize that earning a scholarship through sports wasn’t nearly as easy as I had once believed. Luckily, I was able to grasp this idea early on in high school, and although I enjoyed athletics, I now understood that the likeliness of my future including sports was marginal. Due to the many conversations and support that I received from one of my teachers, I was able to come to peace with the fact that my varsity days would be over in a few short years. My teacher displayed his devotion to education by helping me come to terms with my future not encompassing sports, regardless of the fact that he was my head football coach. As a result of the recognition that my future would be based upon performance in the classroom, I was able to push myself to achieve new academic goals which eventually resulted in acceptance to SMU. Over the course of my time in school, I have been fortunate enough to have many wonderful teachers in class. A few weeks ago, our writing course was presented with a question that asked for one quality that every successful teacher must possess.
