From marching in the scorching hot summer to playing under the Friday night lights, band is a major part of my life. Reflecting on my school career, being in band is my most meaningful commitment because of the relationships I’ve made. If I wasn’t in band, I can scarcely fathom how my life would have turned out. It was only through this organization that I met so many wonderful individuals who have the same passion as I do. The summer of my freshman year, I attended my first marching camp. At first, I didn’t know anyone and was afraid of not fitting in. However, by the end of that summer, I can honestly say that the people I met there are like a second family. The challenges we faced, like marching competitions, would only strengthen the
The band program means a lot to me because it has helped me become more outgoing and friendly to people. It has also helped me gain much more of an interest towards all things music. When I was a kid I always wanted to be a teacher, but I never knew what I wanted to teach. When I joined band and attended different music classes, I became interested in something that meant little to me at the time. During my time in band it became much more clear to me that I wanted to pursue music education. The band program means a lot to me because it made me who I am today and I hope to help someone find themselves through music like I
I started band in the 6th grade, I honestly thought that I wasn’t going to make it to my senior year, but here I am a senior in band. I am not forced to be in band I can get out at anytime anyday, but I choose not to. It is hard when you are marching and it feels like 100+ degrees. You feel like you want to pass out, but you just have to suck it up and be tough. Throughout the years I have been in band I have created friendships. I have my closest friends in band. I have created many memories in band that will last a lifetime, that I will share one day with my kids. I do not know what I would do without band. Getting in band has been the best decision I have ever made. Band has been the highlight of my high school years. One of the scariest moments I have experienced in band was when we messed up at U.I.L. contest, I was terrified I did not want us to make a 2, it all happened so fast. It was time to get our results, we made a 1, I was so happy. The judges said that if you were to close your eyes and listening to us, you would not know we messed up. We never stopped playing and we recovered so fast, we were so matured when this happened. Band takes up
Even though the process of writing was long and difficult, I am really happy with how it all came together and how much it has evolved from the beginning. Being in a marching band is about more than just playing music in a large group or building life-long bonds and friendships. It is also about the way of life for many people who have dedicated hours and hours of practice and exercise to ensure their performances are perfect. Marching bands are a part of life where many good or even bad things can happen. It's where you experience new things and maybe even emotional feelings.
All of this contributed to me joining the marching band, beginning in eighth grade, which has taken over my life now, in the best way possible and given me a defined place. It’s nice to be a part of something like
Being in the UNCG Honors Band was the best experience I've had with an outside band. The band itself was made out the most talented high school musicians in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Tenseness. I felt extremely proud that I had made this band and I felt that I had moved up from being just a high school musician to a serious musician just being around all these other students who were proficient or higher on their instrument. UNCG Honors Band was important to me because not only did I get my first real experience with a college band, but I got a first glimpse of what is to come for me as a tuba player.
Marching band was one of the most difficult/challenging activity systems that I have ever done in my life. But at the same time it was an inspirational and motivating aspect of my life. The very first thing it taught me was the definition of hard work. This was because I spent hundreds of hours to my dedication and devotion to band marching around the field in the hot sun every day. Even though there were times when I wanted to quit; one such instance was when we were out performed by another school, other times it was becuase of the teacher being a little too hard on me when I first started. Despite setbacks such as these, I had an ardent attraction to marching band, mainly because in middle school I was a part of concert band, which made me love music. The biggest, reason why I chose to do marching band, aside from my enjoyment of music, was because towards the end of my eighth grade year my middle school band director told us about a huge opportunity that we had coming up to become a part of the high school across the street marching band. They were called the Titan Regiment. She told us the difference between concert and
Memories began to race through my mind as I started to look back at the time when I first joined the marching band. Coming into high school, I was not reluctant to try out new things, and marching band was an activity that would allow me to open myself up to others and develop a strong sense
I have always looked to spend more time in music, so even with the challenges of marching band I have been the lead bassist for my school’s top jazz band all four years of my journey. Even with the time I spend in marching, I spend at least four hours a week creating music with my peers. In this I’ve not only been able to prove to myself that I can play, but I’ve also learned how to synergize with my fellow musicians to make something beautiful. I’ve been able to transfer this to my life outside of band through group projects and community service projects.
Through music, many paths are able to come together. Although we come from different backgrounds, we are able to bond over the wonderful gift of music. The connection we have through music makes participating in the band program the most meaningful activity for me. The band program opened up my horizon and made me feel like I finally belonged somewhere. The diversity of the people in the program taught me how to be versatile. The age range amongst the members vary in which in one moment you have to respect and listen to who is in charge, then the next moment your peers are waiting for your orders. Learning to respect and handle being respected is an important lesson I am still learning. The position of power is something that should not go
Band brings unforgettable memories. Band brings once in a lifetime opportunities, and students will cherish those memories for the rest of their lives
The marching band has also felt like a home away from home. If I wasn’t at home with my parents, I was on the band field. While being in the marching band at my high school, my long-term goal was to become their drum major for my last two years. I wanted to be the drum major that would cause the band members to put every ounce of passion into performing the show. Once I decided this during my freshman year, I put my heart and soul into my band. I stepped up to any work my band director needed help with. Whether it was fundraising or running OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) events or lining the band field, I was there to show my band director I was ready to be a leader. My setback came when I didn't achieve section leader for the flutes
When I joined as an eighth grader, I did not have many friends, so marching band meant that I would be able to make new friends who accepted and shared my interests. Rehearsals were a place where I would be spending time with my second family. Through long, waterless hours on the field, friendships formed, and grew stronger the longer we spent together practicing. Marching Band gave me a place where I could feel comfortable, and a sense of acceptance what I never really got during my childhood. When things got hard, colorguard and my instructor, Jen, helped me get through the difficult parts of my
Most schools offer a variety of activities, classes, and clubs. I personally was never interested in school or anything to do with it. Then I came across band and was instantly hooked. Band has concerts, marching band, and you get to meet new people. Band is my favorite class and here are some reasons why.
When the question is brought up, “What does band mean to you?” I immediately think of the responsibility, hard work, and dedication and band has given me the chance to learn and strengthen. In addition to these life skills are many others, such as leadership, teamwork, and friendship. The Force has made more than just a difference in my high school career, it has impacted my life and has provided me with skills that will follow me throughout my life. Band means to supporting each other as we work through the hard times and grow closer as a family. Band means working hard and taking on responsibility for yourself. It also means being dependable, that people can count on you and your ability to achieve the unthinkable.
My friends and I would miss our last class of the day because of band. We would run down to the band room and set up for that day practice. It felt like it was a different world. Something that was different from school and life. Seating in our sets waiting to play the piece in front of us. The rush of being there was the best. Seating next to your friends and playing an instrument we was able to choice because we wanted to play it. My friends and I loved our instrument. The instrument of a reflection of us, describing our personality and character. We all loved the band. We loved making music. In our school, the classes was separated by musical talent. So, my friends and I wanted the school to know the band is the best students in the school. We were better than the class of kids in orchestra, the class of kids in choir, and the class of kids who did not choose a musical group. We were better than them on the playgrounds and in our class grade, but we want to better in than them in performance nights. When the band hit the stage everyone will know that we were the best. The other musical groups are subpar, and we were the best thing you would ever
